Pailhead “Trait” 1988. Wax Trax! Records. 4-song industrial EP by the supergroup featuring Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) on vocals and guitar, Al Jourgensen (Ministry) on guitar plus Paul Barker on bass and Bill Rieflin on drums (both also from Ministry). The EP is a comp of two singles released in ‘88 – “Man Should Surrender” b/w “Anthem” and “Don’t Stand in Line” b/w “Ballad.” Trait is definitely more Ministry than Minor Threat or Fugazi: very hard industrial but a bit of the Fugazi punk sound seeps in on “Ballad” and the lyrical delivery on “Anthem.”

Trait’s singles were the only releases by Pailhead besides another single: “I Will Refuse” backed by “No Bunny” from 1987 which features Eric Spicer (Naked Raygun) on drums. Those two tracks were included with the CD release of Trait in the 90′s. From Allmusic: “Pailhead was clearly a fun project to work on for two musicians who were allowed to make some music outside of their respective genres, and though their actual output was rather minimal, the record still stands as a bizarre time capsule of aggressive musical fringes from the 1980s.”

Both tracks are significantly more mellow (for Ministry, mind you) than their later releases, definitely more 80′s synthpop skewed – in fact “All Day” reminds me a lot of New Order – than the more militantly industrial metal sound they’d evolve towards with releases like ‘88′s Land of Rape and Honey (“Stigmata”) and ‘89′s The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste (“Thieves”).

Ministry “Greatest Fits” 2001/2018, double LP reissue on Run Out Grooves, blue and grey marbled vinyl. A great collection of Ministry’s hard industrial dance/metal singles from 1988 to 2001. Despite seeing Ministry’s somewhat disappointing show about a couple years ago, I still really love Ministry. This comp has some of their best including “Stigmata” and “The Land of Rape and Honey” (from the 1988 Land of Rape and Honey), “Thieves” and “So What” (from 1989′s The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste – the version of “So What” on this comp is a live version from a performance in 1994) and three tracks from their hit album 1992 LP Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs including the Grammy-nominated “N.W.O.,” “Just One Fix” and “Jesus Built My Hotrod” which features Butthole Surfers’ Gibby Haynes. (Sidenote: Ministry recorded Psalm 69 at studios in both Chicago and in a small town not that far from Milwaukee – Lake Geneva – which makes me laugh because it’s one of those bucolic Wisconsin communities full of tourists, cheese shops, fudge….and Ministry!) From the less-successful Filth Pig (1996) are Ministry’s cover of Bob Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay” (hilarious, mainly because I really don’t like Dylan’s original) and the 12″ single version of “Reload.” “Supermanic Soul” and “Bad Blood” are included from 1999′s Dark Side of the Spoon. Two non-Ministry album tracks are also on Greatest Fits: “What About Us?” from the 2001 movie A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, directed by Steven Spielberg and a cover of Black Sabbath’s “Supernaut,” a song much more in line with Ministry’s sound than Dylan’s. Both the Dylan and Sabbath cover songs were later included on Ministry’s all-cover song album Cover Up (2008).

Ministry “The Land of Rape and Honey” released 30 years ago today, October 11th, 1988. Also 2 days ago on Oct. 9th, Ministry’s frontman Al Jourgensen turned 60. The Land of Rape and Honey was Ministry’s third album (which actually charted, making it to #164) and is super-heavy industrial metal/dance noise rock; Jourgensen considers it Ministry’s first true album as well as his favorite. I really love the album – it totally brings me back to late ‘88 and ‘89, heading up to the northside of Green Bay where a dance club, The Option, had a night that focused on alternative music and “Stigmata,” the only single released off of The Land of Rape and Honey, was often on heavy rotation. “Stigmata” is one of my top tracks from the LP (sadly, Ministry did not play it when they performed at Turner Hall this past spring). But I also really like the high speed insanity of “The Missing,” the hypnotic stomp of “Destruction” and the brutal title track “The Land of Rape and Honey.”

Allmusic says about the album “The Land of Rape and Honey represented Ministry’s stylistic breakthrough, combining assaultive percussion, samples, synths, and (sometimes) crunching guitars with distorted, barking vocals. For all the emphasis on the group’s metal/industrial fusion, it’s really only the first three (and best) tracks on Rape and Honey – “Stigmata,” “The Missing,” and “Deity” – that employ guitars extensively. The remainder of the album merely suggests heavy metal aggression through its electronic and sampled elements; it is far more industrial in feel, even though it’s just as dark. Ministry was the industrial band that, more than any other, appealed to metal fans, and it was The Land of Rape and Honey that began to lay claim to that status.”

Ministry “Stigmata (Remix)” b/w “Tonight We Murder” 1988. 12″ single. Last night we saw Ministry at Turner Hall where they did NOT play “Stigmata,” instead focusing mostly on more recent material which skews toward the speed metal edge of industrial metal. I hate to say it, but I was pretty bored (even employing my unfortunate superpower of being able to fall asleep in very loud, very crowded places). I get – and appreciate – musicians’ desires to introduce fans to evolving sounds and new artistry, but when over half the audience is hovering just below or above the age of card-carrying AARP members, please please play some of the old stuff. (At least they played “Thieves,” so that was cool.) Al Jourgensen, who turns 60 later this year, is still kicking hard and angry, railing against everyone and everything, especially the current political scene as evidenced by the nihilistic video loops and the two enormous inflatable anti-Trump ducks that framed the stage.

Opening for Ministry were The God Bombs from New York, young and traditional industrialists whose sound better matched old Ministry than new Ministry. After their set, Joe made the observation that The God Bombs opening for Ministry was akin to 1980′s Stray Cats opening for 1950′s Carl Perkins (I’m not sure that ever really happened) in that there is a 30 year difference in the emergence and popularity of the genres and it’s also the approximate age variant between the performers. Which made us and our friends feel really fucking old.

Also performing before Ministry was Chelsea Wolfe, who I guess is a big deal (her track “Feral Love“ was featured in the trailers for the fourth season of Game of Thrones). Super-heavy ambient goth, like Cocteau Twins wearing 100 pound cement boots.

Lard “The Last Temptation of Reid” 1990. Alternative Tentacles. For whatever reason, Lard came up in conversation over the weekend and I realized I had never really listened to this punk-industrial supergroup (made up Jello Biafra from Dead Kennedys, Al Jourgensen, Paul Barker and Jeff Ward from Ministry) in any serious way so here is their first full length LP, The Last Temptation of Reid. As anticipated, it is loud, fast, angry, political and sonically edging on the high end of industrial metal.

The album’s lead track, “Forkboy” was, fittingly, included on the Natural Born Killers soundtrack. “Pineapple Face” refers to Nicaraguan dictator Manuel Noriega who just prior to this record’s recording had been ousted during the US invasion of Panama in 1989 and was subsequently tried and sentenced in the US for drug trafficking and money laundering. Keeping a nice consistent evil-doer thread, the song “Sylvestre Matuschka” is about a Hungarian mass murderer from the 1930′s. “Can God Fill Teeth?” pokes at conspiracy theorists and feels even more poignant in 2016 (“Didn’t I just read/About how the cops are getting parents/To plant bugging devices/In their kids teeth/So if they disappear they can track ‘em/Before they wind up on the backs of milk cartons/And all that/ And didn’t I read/That these devices can go two-way/And everything that I do or say/Is all goin’ on tape somewhere right now”). The record concludes with an industrial-sized meat grinding cover of the manically creepy song “They’re Coming to Take Me Away,” originally performed by one-hit wonder Napoleon XIV (Jerry Samuels) in 1966. Samuels achieved the high-pitched insane vocals by using a VFO. Jello, of course, just sang it as Jello.

“Stigmata” is heavy, nihilistic, industrial distorted, relentless beat perfect for dancing (of which my friends and I did A LOT of to this song during the summer of ‘89 at clubs featuring industrial nights). “Tonight We Murder” is just as aggressive, with evil-tinged hypnotic growling lyrics and rhythm. Time to go polish my industrial dance moves.
