Modern English “After the Snow (Live from Indigo @ O2)” 2021. Mesh & Lace Recordings. Recorded live just about two years ago, on September 18th, 2020 in London during the height of the pandemic. So it is not a concert recording but rather a livestream event (with a VIP “Virtual Meet & Greet” option for an extra $75. Ugh). There is also a DVD of the performance with interviews in between each song. Modern English had planned a 40 year anniversary tour to happen in 2020 which was obviously canceled. As part of that anniversary tour they intended to perform their massively successful 1982 release After the Snow from start to finish. So this release was the compromise (and they are currently on that rescheduled tour).

It’s an excellent live version of After the Snow but it does not feel live at all – this is great in some ways because the sound quality is close to perfect. But it really doesn’t feel much different from the original ’82 release, maybe less of that 80’s production sound. Some songs feel a little sadder “Dawn Chorus” in particular) but overall it’s still bright meets dark new wave that pairs with an 80’s anthemic vibe. My top tracks are identical to the original LP’s: “Someone’s Calling,” “Face of Wood,” “Life in the Gladhouse” and the title track “After the Snow.” And of course there’s the iconic 80’s song “Melt With You” which actually does slightly different than the original single, which hit #7 in the US and continues to be popular 40 years later.

Modern English “After the Snow” released 40 years ago today, May 3rd, 1982. Their second LP, After the Snow is excellent new wave/post punk and has the era-defining smash hit “Melt With You.” While it took awhile, it eventually went to #78 on the main US charts in ’83 (and then again to #76 in ’90 after Modern English re-recorded it) and reached #7 on the Rock Albums & Top Tracks chart; over the past 40 years it has become one of the most-played songs on US radio stations. The single has also been featured in a ton of movies and commercials.

“Melt With You” is, of course, amazing and I danced my ass off to it countless times in the 80’s, but the rest of After the Snow is great and highly danceable as well. My other top tracks are the album opener “Someone’s Calling” (released as the third and final single from the album in ’83), “Face of Wood,” the LP’s first single “Life in the Gladhouse” and the title track “After the Snow.”

We have had the chance to see Modern English perform a couple of times in the past few years, first in 2017 as part of the Retro Futura tour of 80’s new wave/pop bands and then again in 2019 along with The Alarm and Gene Loves Jezebel. It’s always startling when you’re in the first row and one of the band members makes direct eye contact with you during a solo:

Modern English “Ricochet Days” 1984. 4 AD Records. Tonight we’re seeing Modern English perform, along with The Alarm and Gene Loves Jezebel: I’m most interested to see Modern English of the three. We saw them a few years ago on an 80′s retro tour (along with artists like Howard Jones, Men Without Hats, English Beat, etc.) and their music held up well, some 35 years later. Ricochet Days is Modern English’s third album (#93 US charts): new wave synth pop at the height of its popularity though Ricochet Days is not nearly as good as their sophomore release After the Snow (1982) with its smash single “Melt With You.” It’s pretty bland with few stand-out tracks. The instrumentation and melody of “Spinning Me Round” is pleasant but not particularly memorable and “Blue Waves” teases the same flavor as “Melt With You” but is either too close to its melody or is missing that certain je ne sais quoi that made “Melt With You” a hit. The single “Hands Across the Sea,” which went to #91 in the US, is definitely one of the better songs on the record but I really only like about half the song – the chorus – the rest is a bit too Spandau Ballet-smooth for my tastes. The closing track, “Chapter 12,” is also decent and the most danceable on the LP with a pretty good synthpop riff that recalls early Depeche Mode.

Modern English “After the Snow” 1982. Later this week we are going to the Retro Futura concert at Wisconsin State Fair which will feature Modern English along with other 80′s new wave acts English Beat (I’m particularly excited about that one), Men Without Hats, Howard Jones, Paul Young, and Katrina and the Waves. After the Snow is Modern English’s second release and features the monster smash “I Melt With You,” the most pop-orientated track on the album, along with two other singles: “Life in the Gladhouse,” a vaguely dark synth pop track with powerful tribal drums, and my favorite from the LP “Someone’s Calling,” which is also touched with shadowy romance yet still totally danceable. Overall the album is really quite good – a lot of sophisticated post punk beats and melodies (“Face of Wood” takes its sweet time to develop, as does the stark, slow burning “Dawn Chorus”). The title track, “After the Snow,” blends acoustic and electric jangly guitar and creates a dynamic tension between varying rhythms and vocal intensities (the good old “loud-quiet-loud” song structure). The album – and the title track in particular – does not feel at all dated the way that many 80′s productions do.

Modern English “I Melt With You” 1982. 12″ single b/w “Life in the Gladhouse” and “Someone’s Calling.” It’s a freakishly warm day here for March 8th in the upper Midwest, 70 degrees, all balmy sunshine and sweet breezes; exactly one week ago we had a minor snowstorm (a few inches but we just shrug and get out the shovels) and now that snow has melted so, yeah, that’s today’s theme.

“I Melt With You” was a new wave one-hit wonder in the 80′s (so 80′s that it was featured in the film Valley Girl) and has been practically played to death in subsequent years, worst of all in commercials for Burger King and Taco Bell (sorry marketing geniuses, your appeal to this Gen-Xer did not get me eating at either crappy fast food chain). Only a bit less offensive is its use by Hershey to promote holiday milk chocolate (but this is mainly because I like chocolate). The B-side of “I Melt With You” is definitely worth a listen. “Someone’s Calling” is a perfect swirling 80′s new wave dance track, full of keyboards, poppy rhythm and echo-ey vocals.
