Simon LeBon Interview 1982. Today, October 27th, is Simon LeBon’s birthday (b. 1958). This 7″ limited edition picture disc on Talkies (an unofficial UK record label based in the UK) was released in August of 1982 as part of 3 part series (I have 2 of the 3). It’s an 18 minute interview with Simon (I don’t know who the interviewer is) that touches on Simon’s origin story with the band (his girlfriend at the time was working at the Rum Runner club and told him about a band that was looking for a singer – the rest is, obviously, history). At the time of the interview Duran Duran had yet to have a #1 single and Simon sounded nonplussed by that, saying basically it gave the band a goal (which of course they met). Simon also chats about being categorized as a New Romantic band (and trashes the media a bit for pigeon holing them), the band’s songwriting process (democratic and egalitarian) and if traveling to Sri Lanka to film three videos for Rio was “justifiable” (yep, totally was). It sounds like this interview was from a radio show or similar; while there is no music on the disc, the interviewer does introduce several tracks including “Rio,” “Hungry Like the Wolf” and “The Chauffeur” during the course of interview, making it seem like the conversation was interrupted to play to song. I can’t find any visual or audio link online so here’s a different link, Simon and Nick on MTV from their Secon Annual New Year’s Eve Ball, 1982 in New York City.

I pilfered this from the kiddo’s Ozzy collection to spin in remembrance of Osbourne who died yesterday, July 22nd, at age 76. No More Tears was his 6th solo studio LP and a smash, going to #7 on the US album charts (#17 in the UK) with the hits “No More Tears” and “Mama I’m Coming Home” dominating the hard rock/hair metal airwaves in ’91 and ’92; the former went to #71 in the US (but #17 on the rock chart) and latter going to #28 on the mainstream charts in the US but #2 on the Mainstream Rock charts. Besides being a great heavy metal LP, the record is also notable for Lemmy Kilmister’s writing contributions on “Mama” plus “I Don’t Want to Change the World” (so good and thrashy – the live version on Ozzy’s 1993 Live & Loud won a grammy for Best Metal Performance), “Desire” (another thrasher) and “Hellraiser.” Motörhead recorded “Hellraiser” in ’92 for their March ör Die album and released it as a single; in 2021 Ozzy and Lemmy released a new version of “Hellraiser” that mashes both Ozzy and Lemmy’s vocals in one song (the kid has that in his collection, too). The track “Time After Time” is a very formulaic, late 80’s/early 90’s mid-tempo metal track, ballad-esque (with very weird and silly video) but it totally works on this LP. “Zombie Stomp” is a fun headbanger (and also silly) and very on-brand for the Prince of Darkness who seemed to not quite take himself too seriously.

Duran Duran “Danse Macabre De Luxe Zoetrope” 2025, picture disc EP, limited edition Record Store Day release. Yesterday, June 8th, was Nick Rhodes’ birthday (b. 1962) so I’m taking this new acquisition to my extensive D2 collection for a spin. The seven-song EP is a collection of remixes (or re-remixes) of tracks from their 2023 Halloween-themed Danse Macabre LP, which itself had remixes (and covers) of some of their older songs, plus some “new” material, all of which appeared in the 2023 Danse box set edition. The cover songs include “Evil Woman” by ELO” and “Spooky” made popular by Classics IV in 1967 and sung on Duran’s version by The Brides of Dracula (Rachel O’Connor and Anna Ross). New(ish) D2 originals include the instrumentals “The Visitor” and “Mask of the Pink Death” (D2 original from ’23), “Dialogues Of The Dead,” and the instructional (and extra creepy) spoken word “Instructions for a Séance.” Best of the bunch is “New Moon (Dark Phase),” which is a particularly spooky rendition of “New Moon on Monday” (1983). It’s supposed to be an interactive picture disk experience, with instructions on the liner notes to “view under a strobe light set to 30Hz in a dark room.” I do not have a strobe light so tried it with a bright light and phone (other options listed)…I couldn’t get the lighting right, apparently, because you’re supposed to see this.

Duran Duran “The Reflex” 1984. 12″ single, picture disc. Today, June 8th, is Nick Rhodes’ 60th birthday! (b.
The third single from Seven and the Ragged Tiger, “The Reflex” hit #1 virtually everywhere and was their first chart-topper in the US. This picture disk has two versions of the track, both remixed by Nile Rodgers: the “Dance Mix,” which is a couple of minutes longer than the single version with a lot of vocal tinkering and looping, and the “The Dance Mix-Edited” which is the same as the regular 7″ single. Both differ slightly from the album version. All are amazing.

Side A has “The Reflex (Dance Mix)” which was remixed by Nile Rogers and Side B has the single version plus “Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)” performed live at Hammersmith Odean in London in 1982. “Make Me Smile” was originally performed by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel in 1975; Steve Harley joined Duran Duran at the Hammersmith performance of the song.

The summer of ‘84 was ALL about “The Reflex.” Sometime in late June or July, I went to Girl Scout camp in northern Wisconsin and we went on a 3 or 4 day canoe trip down the Menomonee River. To my delight, another Duranie was on the trip, Allyson (we met on that trip in ‘84 and we’re still friends!), and we sang “The Reflex” over and over and over and over and over. Another friend on the river was a huge Prince fan. Prince’s “When Dove’s Cry” knocked “The Reflex” out of the number one position on July 7th, 1984, so we heard a lot of that song as well. Singing was a big deal at camp but typically the camp song repertoire was limited to lots singing in the round (think “Row Row Your Boat” but fancier), cadence songs for hiking (i.e. “left, left, left right left, I left my wife and 24 kids without any gingerbread in the cupboard and thought I did right, right, right left right…”) and paddle songs (i.e. “Land of the Silver Birch”). Our camp counselors weren’t really that much older than us, college students working for the summer, so I have a feeling they secretly appreciated some pop infusion into the usual camp fare, though they did seem irritated with us a lot of the time (I’m pretty sure one of them was a Dead Head). Here is a classic 80′s-posed picture from the last day of that canoe trip. I’m in the lower left corner, rocking my Simon LeBon inspired hair.
