F-Word! “Like It Or Not Live” 1978. Posh Boy Records. First-wave LA. punk, recorded live “off the boards” at Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco “in front of a hostile audience” at a show with the Nuns and Avengers. The sound is pretty excellent for 70’s live punk. F-Word! has virtually no releases: besides this live LP, they released a single covering the Germs’ “Shut Down,” which also appears on Like It Or Not Live. Other covers include New York Dolls’ “Bad Girl” and The Stooges’ “No Fun.” The originals all have a sound that mashes up their influences (Stooges, Germs, Ramones). My top picks are “Do the Nihil” (great title!), “Out There,” the super-messy and melodic “(I Don’t Want To Be A) Real Guy” and the wild “Eat Your Dinner” (can’t understand a word of it except the the “eat your dinner!” part). You can listen to the entire recording here.

I knew nothing about this band but found out F Word! was part of the initial 1977 L.A. punk explosion, centered around the Masque club in central Hollywood. Posh Boy was both their label and manager (Robbie Fields), who, according to F-Word!’s Dim Wanker (co-founder, guitar) precipitated the breakup by releasing a record without the band’s knowledge or permission, kicking the then 17-year old Wanker in the stomach, and instigating rifts between band members, particularly Wanker and co-founder Rik L Rik (vocals). The two mended their split years later and played a show “at Bergimont Station in late 1999 w/ X, The GoGo’s, The Crowd and MC’d by Pee Wee Herman to a maximum crowd filling out into the street” (punkvinyl.com). Rik died in 2000.

Stepmothers “You Were Never My Age” 1981. Posh Boy Records. 80’s power pop/punk from California with a glam rock/metal edge. I have no idea where this record came from, it just appeared (as sometimes happens) in my room. I’m assuming it’s a “should it stay or should it go” pull as we continue to painstakingly cull our collection. Since I have never heard of Stepmothers, I had to some digging. This is their only LP release; they have a couple of other singles and EP’s from the early 80’s, also on Posh Boy. There’s next to zero info on the band itself, other than they were active from ’77-’83 in the LA area. There’s a lot of information on Stepmothers’ drummer, Dusty Watson who has been a power hitter in the music scene for over 40 years. He drummed for Lita Ford on her debut album and subsequent tour; he worked with bands like Concrete Blonde, Channel 3, Agent Orange, Dick Dale’s backing band The Del-Tones, The Queers, the Sonics, and The Supersuckers. He most recently was touring with Nashville Pussy so I think we may have seen him perform this past fall when they toured with The Toadies and The Reverend Horton Heat (we actually missed Nashville Pussy but all the drummers were onstage for The Toadies song “I Burn.”

You Were Never My Age is OK. The drums are great (“Don’t Kill the Beat” and punchy punk opener “I Hear a Rumble“) but the vocals are a bit whiney instead of punk-snotty, especially on the power ballad album closer “To Sir With Love.” There’s a decent amount of metal guitar posturing, like on “Rub it In” which is very Crüe-esque. You Were Never My Ageis an interesting example of the overlap between the LA metal and punk scene but there’s not enough on this LP for me. I think this is a go.

Agent Orange “Living in Darkness” 1981. Posh Boy Records. Last night we caught the classic OG/OC hardcore punks perform at Shank Hall here in Milwaukee. We bought our tickets back in late 2019 (I think) for a show originally scheduled for October 2020, which was rescheduled for 2021 and then finally came to fruition almost exactly two years late. I believe that 2020 was intended as a 40th anniversary tour for Living in Darkness. Their debut record mixed the emerging California hardcore punk sound coming out of Orange County with 60’s surf rock to help develop the new skate punk sound; it’s ranked as one of the “10 Best Skate Punk Records of All Time” (I did not know that was a list that existed).

Agent Orange played Living in Darkness in its entirety last night, though with other songs as well (otherwise it would have been a very short show as only one song, the title track “Living in Darkness” clocks in at over three minutes; most tracks hover around the 2:00 mark). Unprompted by me, the bassist (Perry Giordano, in the band since 2006) handed me the set list at the end of the night, though I was totally going to ask for it!

This album is such a classic that it’s hard for me to pick my top tracks as I love the whole record and know it beginning to end. But! I adore “Bloodstains” with its anthemic and iconic Cali-punk chorus “Bloodstains, speed kills, fast cars, cheap thrills, rich girls, fine wine” set to a rippingly punked-up surf guitar riff. They go 100% surf with their cover of Dick Dale’s “Miserlou” but then remove all the surfy sunshine on the excellent but very dark “Everything Turns Grey” and “The Last Goodbye.” Then, of course, is “No Such Thing” which is now such a classic skate punk song that it appears in a video game aptly titled “Skate.” Finally, there’s the album opener “Too Young to Die,” which they introduced last night as a tribute to the recent passing of Coolio (I didn’t click record fast enough to get that intro, though):

Circle Jerks “Wild in the Streets” 1982/2022. Limited deluxe edition on orange and white striped vinyl. Trust Records. This past weekend was Keith Morris’ birthday (b. 1955) and I’m finally getting around to writing about Wild in the Streets which celebrated its 40th anniversary this past March. The special reissue comes with a super-high quality booklet and live bonus tracks which were recorded at The Elite Club in San Francisco in April ’82. The band recorded the studio tracks in one day (in a room next to another studio where Mötley Crüe were recording) and mixed it in three “in Herb Alpert’s private studio, Studio D. It was his private room.” “I was setting up the drums and this guy comes up to me and starts asking, ‘Where did you start to play?’ It was like, ‘Buddy, we’re gonna be here for a few hours and then we’re done. I really haven’t got so much patience to answer all these questions.’ Later on one of the techs says, ‘You know, that was Herb Alpert you were talking to.’ It was ironic because I was a huge fan of Nick Ceroli who was Herb’s drummer.” (Lucky, CJ’s drummer, from the LP booklet)

The lead/title track, one of CJ’s best-known songs and an 80’s punk anthem, “Wild in the Streets” is a cover of a ’73 single by Garland Jeffereys. CJ first recorded it in ’80 for Posh Boy Records and it appeared on the comp Rodney on the ROQ. There are two other cover songs on Wild in the Streets: “Just Like Me” (Paul Revere & the Raiders – one of my favorite 60’s songs ever) and Jackie DeShannon‘s “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” which is kinda hilarious as a hardcore punk song. Other notable tracks from the original album are, for me, “Question Authority” and “Moral Majority.” The bonus live tracks include fast and raw versions of “Letter Bomb,” “Wild in the Streets” and “Stars and Stripes.”

I finally got a chance to see Circle Jerks last year in Las Vegas where they headlined the second night of Punk Rock Bowling. Their performance of “Wild in the Streets” was a definite highlight of the weekend.

Social Distortion “Mainliner (Wreckage From the Past)” 1995. Time Bomb Recordings. A collection of singles and b-sides recorded in 1981. From Mike Ness’ liner notes “These recordings were all made when we were in high school or just getting out. Punk rock was mostly played at parties; rarely could we get shows at club or even at halls. At the time, just having short hair pretty much guaranteed getting into a fight. Anyway, this stuff reflects the time we made it – young, raw and completely unafraid of taking chances. You’d never believe it now but people were actually scared of punk being played.”

Social Distortion rerecorded “Moral Threat” and “All the Answers” for their first LP, Mommy’s Little Monster and “Justice for All” appeared as “It’s the Law” on their ‘88 release Prison Bound, but other than those tracks the album is stocked with some great early singles. Two of my favorites appear twice on Mainliner: “1945″ and “Playpen.” First up are the Posh Boy versions for each track, recorded in April of ‘81 as a three-piece with Mike Ness on guitar and vocals, Dennis Danell on bass and John “Carrot” Stevenson on drums. The Posh Boy cut of “1945″ was part of the 1985 comp Rodney on the ROQ Vol. 2 and Posh Boy included “Playpen” on its 1987 The Future Looks Bright comp. Social Distortion recorded the second variations of the songs in October ‘81 for 13th Floor Records, now as a four-piece with Ness again on guitar and vocals, Danell on guitar, Brent Liles on bass and Derek O’Brien on drums. The tracks “Justice for All,” “All the Answers,” “Mainliner” and “Moral Threat” also appeared on The Future Looks Bright. Mainliner also has a great punked up cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb.”

From Allmusic: “Mainliner: Wreckage From the Past is a collection of early singles and rare B-sides from Orange County punk legends Social Distortion. Recorded while they were still in their teens, this early material shows no signs of the country-influenced sound that would appear later in the band’s career. The main style displayed here is pure punk fury with short, fast songs, lyrics about teen rebellion, and plenty of attitude to go around. “Playpen,” “Moral Threat,” and “All the Answers” speak of the plight of the early punk rockers who took major abuse from all forms of authority back in a period where the musical style was still considered dangerous. “Mainliner” is a not-at-all subtle tale of heroin abuse. A cover of “Under My Thumb” shows early on that the Rolling Stones were just as much an influence on Social Distortion as the Sex Pistols and the Clash. This collection is definitely intended for dedicated fans and is more of a history lesson than a proper album. Although extremely raw and a bit naïve, becoming familiar with this material will help fans understand where the band came from and appreciate their point of view on stronger, later material.”

Black Flag “Louie Louie” b/w “Damage I” 1981. Posh Boy Records. This is Dez Cadena era Black Flag (post-Keith Morris and Ron Reyes, pre-Henry Rollins) before he blew out his voice with his scream-growl singing style. Side A is a lightning-fast, irreverent punk cover of the classic “Louie Louie” (originally written in 1958 by Richard Berry but made popular – and controversial – by The Kingsmen in 1963); Black Flag notoriously performed an extended version of “Louie Louie” after Ron Reyes quit the band mid-gig at their ‘80 show in Redondo Beach, inviting the audience up on stage to sing. Black Flag’s main songwriter Greg Ginn and Dez darkly rework the famously misinterpreted lyrics into a punk lament that are pictured on the single’s cover, “You know the pain/That’s in my heart/It just shows/I’m not very smart/Who needs love/When you’ve got a gun/Who needs love/To have any fun.” Side B’s “Damage I” is a long (in punk minutes) sludgy screamer that would be reworked into “Damaged II” (sung by Henry Rollins) on Black Flag’s LP Damaged.
