While Garcia sings and plays all the instruments – except drums played by the Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann – the LP is full of classic tracks that the full Grateful Dead band would go on to perform in their non-stop touring for the subsequent 20+ years including the single “Sugaree” which went to #94 on the US charts in April 1972; it was Garcia’s only chart single. He also released “The Wheel” as a single but I’m not sure that charted – it’s a really catchy folk/country track. Other Dead show classics include the Americana styled opener “Deal” (one of my old-time faves) and “Loser.” The country twinged lament “To Lay Me Down” shows off both Garcia’s steel guitar and piano talents; I think this one was played somewhat frequently on the road as well. Other tracks have a trippier, psychedelic bent to them like “Bird Song” which was a tribute to the recently-ish deceased Janis Joplin (and was another Dead show staple) and the cosmic freakout weird “Late for Supper,” “Spidergawd” and “Eep Hour” (like during “Space/Drums” I would be taking a bathroom break if they were played at a concert).

Glyders “Forever” 2025. Drag City Records. Chicago-based bluesy, glammy and riff-heavy hard psych, Forever is Glyders fourth LP (their first two look to be cassette and possibly digital-only releases). Gobs of 60’s and 70’s sounds (Beatles, CCR, T. Rex), kinda similar to King Gizzard but less space jammy (usually – “Hard Ride” is pretty trippy and Side B’s “Steppin’/Tell Me About the Rabbit” is like a million minutes long). I haven’t seen Glyders perform, to my knowledge, but they did play at Milwaukee’s Psych Fest in ’24. Tracks like “New Realm” bring in their Chicago roots with a blues-forward guitar sound but that track also has some exotic flavors noodling around too. One of my top tracks is the psych-stomper “Stone Shadow.” The opening track “Super Glyde” is another great trippy rocker while “Moon Eyes” and “Thousand Miles” go a bit Americana twang.

The Flash Hits “Growths” 2022. Frontier Records on gold vinyl. Four piece arty psychedelic-ish post-punk from L.A. Growths is their second of three total LP releases (their first was on cassette and I’m guessing sort of self-released). I’m fairly certain this is my first ever listen to The Flash Hits and so far I’m intrigued. It vacillates between atmospheric dreamy lo-fi psych (“Brat-Scam“), groovy Velvet Underground-meets-They Might Be Giant nerdy drone-pop like on my top track “Fake Pepper” plus the sorta exotic “The Extra Special,” another top pick, and Sgt. Pepper era Beatlesque psych-pop (“Stay Tops” which also veers into danceable garage rock as does the angular “Hobo Cloak”). The overall sound is dense buzzy guitars backed by sparse rhythms, overlaid with delightfully (slightly) off key vocals. There’s even some goth-flute! (“With“) (I’m guessing it’s not really a flute – or horns – but the thought of that makes me laugh) All in al, a bit weird and nerdy. From their Bandcamp site: “The Flash Hits Are Now! Born of a love for colorful guitars, hypno-groovy bass, fascinating rhythms, found sounds and sweet-dream sidewalk talk, Flash Hits row merrily through streams of post-punk, art rock, and micro-psychedelia, weaving a backdrop to deliver their neorealistic Oulipo-laced narratives.”

Death Valley Girls “Islands in the Sky” 2023. Suicide Squeeze Records on limited edition “Venus in Gemini” colored vinyl. Witchy garage psych drenched in spacey California stoner sunshine. Islands in the Sky is DVG’s fifth (I think) studio LP. We’ve been fans of the band since catching them at a hyper-intimate show back in August 2019 at Romanus Fest in Indianapolis (held inside a tiny record store, Square Cat Vinyl). Guitar and organ-forward with thick melodies and singer/frontwoman Bonnie Bloomgarden’s soaring vocals define all of DVG’s releases and Islands in the Sky is no exception, though this record feels a bit more anthemic and less garage-pop influenced – like the opener “California Mountain Shake,” “Sunday” and the jangly “All That is Not of Me.” That vibe is explained by Bloomgarden’s writing inspiration for the album while bedridden with illness for several months: “When I was sick, I started to wonder if it would be possible to write a record with messages of love to my future self. This was really the first time that I consciously thought about my own suffering and what future me might need to hear to heal. I struggled so much in my life with mental health, abuse, PTSD, and feeling like I didn’t belong anywhere. And I don’t want anyone—including my future self—to suffer ever again. I realized that if we are all part of one cosmic consciousness, as we [Death Valley Girls] believe, then Islands in the Sky could serve not only as a message of love and acceptance to myself, but also from every self to every self, because we are all one!”

There are exceptions to the down-to-midtempo vibes on Islands with some real banging ass-shakers like “Magic Powers” and “What are the Odds,” two of my favorite songs on the record. Also great: “Journey to Dog Star” is an exotic trance-dance and the previously released “When I’m Free” (a split single with Le Butcherettes), as I wrote in 2023 when the single was released, highlights all the best DVG have to offer: swagger, swirling keyboards and killer rhythm.

Le Butcherettes + Death Valley Girls split single, limited edition iridescent blue Inner Ascension variant. 2022. Suicide Squeeze Records. This past Friday was DVG’s front woman Bonnie Bloomgarden’s birthday (August 25th, I have no idea how old she is, my guess is in her 40’s?). Side A is Le Butcherettes’ (garage punk band from Mexico who formed in the 00’s) “The Universe,” a haunting, almost a cappella rendition of the Death Valley Girls original from their 2020 LP Under the Spell of Joy. Side B is the Death Valley Girls excellent psych-rocker track “When I’m Free” which highlights all the best DVG have to offer: swagger, swirling keyboards and killer rhythm. There’s a digital-only dance remix of the “When I’m Free” done by none other than Peaches. From their Bandcamp: “Under Peaches’ meticulous care, “When I’m Free” transforms from a scrappy rock song to a throbbing, minimalist club banger. The musical key switches from major to minor, taking the song from celebratory mode into a leaner and meaner message of empowerment. Bloomgarden’s impassioned vocals remain in place along with a few organ glissandos, though the rest of the original is excised in favor of stark four-on-the-floor beats and pulsing synth bass. The sound may prompt a different type of gyration than the original, but the spirit of freedom and revelry remains and takes on a whole new angle under Peaches’ masterful manipulations.”

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard “Flying Microtonal Banana” 2017. Flightless Records/ATO Records on “radioactive yellow” vinyl. Flying Microtonal Banana was the first of 5 (!!!) King Gizzard releases in 2017 and it hit #10 on the US Independent Album chart (#170 on the US Billboard 200 album chart). The Australian trippy psych band experiment endlessly with each of their releases and for this one they “decided to investigate microtonal tuning, a non-Western way of tuning that involves intervals smaller than a semitone. They had a custom-made guitar gifted to them, then realized they needed to create other microtonal instruments to match. With a $200 budget each, the bandmembers bought new gear and altered the instruments so they could be tuned in a way that made them compatible. The new tunings don’t radically change the band’s way of doing things; the songs are still crunchy, twisting jams that have huge hooks and exciting sections of instrumental prowess where they join together in a furious wave of sound that almost feels unstoppable. This time though, the melodies are are more exotic (to ears attuned to Western music anyway) and complex, as the leads are played by the differently tuned guitars, howling Turkish horns, and murky keyboards, giving them a psychedelic twist.” (Allmusic)

We saw King Gizzard play a sold-out show at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee this past Saturday night. We had seriously nosebleed seats, the screen that hung over the stage that showed a psychedelic light show (I think) completely obscured by the ceiling’s overhang.

They led off with the first track from Flying Microtonal Banana, “Rattlesnake” and I’m pretty embarrassed to say that was the only song I heard in its entirety, though I’m guessing they probably played at least one or more tracks, including maybe “Sleep Drifter.” I am going to blame that song for my loss of consciousness on and off for the rest of the show. (My other excuses: I get up really early for work on Saturdays, we attended two parties that afternoon and evening at which I definitely had a few cocktails and lots of snacks.) To that end, I’m going to quote copiously from Milwaukee Record’s review of the show – their writer clearly did stay awake: “The setlist grouped songs from various albums together, drawing primarily from last year’s onslaught of material (excluding mellow jazz-ish offering Sketches of Brunswick East), but they occasionally referenced older stuff as well. Gizzard songs tend to run together on albums, and there are musical and lyrical motifs that appear across multiple releases. Adding to the band’s mythological puzzle, they like to toss song fragments in between and inside live jams, which included significant portions of “Cellophane” and “Hot Water” (from 2014’s I’m In Your Mind Fuzz) and probably others on this night, much to the delight of a sizable contingency of diehards in attendance…The meat of the set featured some of the band’s more dizzying, mathematical pieces. The dynamic shifts of “The Lord Of Lightning” were exaggerated to dramatic effect, and the polyrhythmic maze of “The Fourth Colour” was even more impressive when able to watch as drummers Michael Cavanagh and Eric Moore stayed perfectly in synch. There was a surprising amount of improvisation given the unorthodox rhythms and often serpentine compositions that Gizzard favors. Even played straight, there’s something to be said for complicated songs played expertly, and while Gizzard can justifiably be tagged as prog, they get too fast and noisy to embody the usual preconceptions that term evokes. Following an exhausting trio of songs from Nonagon Infinity came the night’s biggest surprise: a stretched-out journey through “The River,” from 2015’s somewhat overlooked Quarters! album. The band cranked up the krautrock influence, turning the breezy tune into an intense, pulsing drone at times, fading almost to nothing in between sections. It brought to mind the heyday of dearly-departed local acts like Catacombz and Worrier, and that year or two when meditative psych/post-punk seemed to be gaining a foothold on the local scene. Maybe Milwaukee has been craving a resurgence in this style. You would’ve thought King Gizzard were local boys made good by the response they got.” That’s most of the article, you can read the rest here and see a couple of better photos than I could get as well, like this fantastic shot of the crowd at the end of the show (there was no encore).

Calliope “Chapel Perilous” 2018. Romanus Records. Limited edition custom vinyl, black sand and gold glitter filled. I nabbed this beauty on Saturday night at Calliope’s record release show where they played Company Brewing in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood along with Space Raft and Shogun, two other local bands. Calliope recorded Chapel Perilous awhile back in the northwoods of Wisconsin, releasing the 7″ of “Sea of Red” – b/w “Brujo” – last year (and its crazy-ass video just a few weeks ago). Like “Sea of Red” and “Brujo” which both appear on the new LP, the rest of Chapel Perilous is super-heavy stoner psych rock with enough metal (i.e. “Sands of July” is touched by Sabbath) for a slo-mo head banging session. (While trying to take a few photos at the show I got whiplashed in the face by some dude’s long blond locks, ew. I’m pretty sure Calliope was performing “Evil as You” when that happened). They credit “a lot” of musical influences and besides metal, there’s a bit of blues (one of my favorite tracks is “Carry Me Home” with its brutal yet melancholy sliding guitar and organ) and even whispers of country – granted it’s country on acid (i.e. “The Dunes”). The title track, “Chapel Perilous” has a totally creepy intro before launching into dense and savage droning organ swirls.

The show on Saturday was an amazing trip, Calliope’s psychedelic rock enhanced by a hallucinogenic light show and stage backdrop; while it didn’t have the big budget production of the Black Angels show we saw the previous weekend, it was still a great visual experience. Below are photos of Al Kraemer (keyboards, vocals) getting in on the head-banging; Victor Buell (guitar) and Anthony Smith (bass) getting lost in the musical haze.

Lemon Sky “Dos” 2016. Silver and gold splatter on translucent yellow vinyl. Lemon Sky is a five-piece modern psych-prog rock band from Cincinnati – I hadn’t heard of them before this past weekend when I saw them play with fellow-Cincinattians Suck the Honey at a hole-in-the-wall tavern in Beaver Dam, WI. By the end of the show I was lining up to pick up some vinyl and oh boy, is it psychedelically pretty! Even the cover has trippy elements; designed and printed by vocal/guitarist Aaron Madrigal, the back has a cool imprint that when lit by black light, comes to life.

From their Facebook page “a heavy yet highly-melodic brand of psychedelic garage rock that combines the classic rock pomp and stomp of Led Zeppelin with the paisley pop melodies and modern musicality of Queens of the Stone Age for a forward-thinking sound rooted in the past. The band’s signature three-guitar attack consists of vocalist Aaron Madrigal, lead guitarist Ed Bruker, and noise machine Eric Cronstein while the he foundation of the the group is laid down by drummer Eric Keyes and bassist Steven Korfhagen. This pairing of instrumentation allows Lemon Sky’s live show to recreate and expand upon their recorded material with visceral textures, tonal layers, and rhythmic intricacies. A Lemon Sky show is nothing if not full, heavy, and intense.”

Yes to all of this. The show was pure joy to watch – there were times when their toes, choreographed in unison, reached out to touch the amazing expanse of foot pedals.

Lemon Sky’s drummer, Eric Keyes, was particularly expressive as he thrashed away, providing power that could easily fill a stadium.

I wasn’t familiar with Lemon Sky’s catalog prior to this show but I definitely remember a few songs they played that appear on Dos, the Halloween-ish “Ash and Bone,” the excellent “Guillotine” (the intro reminiscent of Zeppelin’s “D’Yer Mak’er”) and the absolute killer track “Kept in Beyond” which is an epic psychedelic hard-rock thrasher that brought to mind Zeppelin’s “The Crunge” but – I like it better! (Here is an acoustic version of “Kept In the Beyond” which is also amazing.) Strains of the more trippy aspects of the Beach Boys peak through in the harmonies on tracks like “Dos” and “Bad Bad” (though way heavier than the Beach Boys). I hope Lemon Sky ventures back to Wisconsin soon, hopefully to somewhere less remote.

**Show photos credited to my friend Mike Collins, who has a much better camera than I do.
