Joshua Powell “Psychotropic” 2018/2023 Romanus Records, limited edition “purple marble” variant. Psychedelic dream pop. I’ve been sitting on this LP for a bit as I knew I’d be seeing Joshua Powell play live again – it took a bit longer than anticipated but we caught his set this past weekend at Romanus Records Fest in Indianapolis. Such nice boys! (inside joke that both Joshua Powell and bass player Josh are in on – Josh/aka Bass Mountain is not on this album but is now a regular band member and absolutely is a dead-ringer for actor Jason Momoa). Joshua has taken a hard turn musically since the release of Psychotropic, in fact he told me he plans to start recording and touring under the name Skeleton Party, the name of his latest album. The show at Romanus Fest was great – more psych-metal than pop for sure. I’m honestly good with both, having seen him play shows that focused on both and a wide swath of genres in between – he’s a great musician and showman (we saw him play at Romanus Fest back in either 2017 or 2018, I can’t remember which, as well as at Mile of Music in Appleton – I think – in 2023 or 2024). My only complaint is that the lighting inside Black Circle Brewing, where about half of the sets at Romanus Fest happened (the rest were thankfully outside where it was marginally cooler and definitely brighter). The purple-blue lights made taking photos of the band’s set a bitch.

Joshua Powell’s 2018 release is a trip taken at the neighborhood pool or country lake on a warm summer day. Shimmering and bright, with a few gentle shadows that occasionally drift by from passing fluffy clouds. In one review they noted that the press release came with the claim that the record is “acid trip for the whole family.” The title Pyschotropic is absolutely an accurate description of the record’s sound. My top track is “Spirit of the Trailer Park” which has an anthemic vibe, but gently-so. Also great are “Arrowheads or Worse” which epitomizes the psych-dream vibe with a bit of jangle, the alt-pop flavor of “Bliss is a Flak Jacket” and “Ascension” which leans Americana/country with some harmonica and hints of twang in the acoustic guitar. A really excellent spin from start to finish for a lazy late summer afternoon.

Status Quo “Messages From the Status Quo” 1968. US version of their debut (released as Picturesque Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo in their native UK). Psychedelic pop that swirls and bops along gaily through lemon drop fields and lollipop forests. It’s adorably ridiculous. The band, and album, came up recently as we were deciding what Camper Van Beethoven records to cull – I absolutely love CVB’s cover of Status Quo’s “Pictures of Matchstick Men.” And while I do know the original, I haven’t really listened to the rest of the album. It didn’t do well upon its release, failing to chart in the UK, but the single “Pictures of Matchstick Men” went to #7 and charted in the US at #12. It’s for sure the best track on the album. The opener is pretty good though that track, “Black Veils of Melancholy” (released as the second single), and “Sunny Cellophane Sky” are both pretty obvious rehashes of “Matchstick Men” – I think they just switched around a few notes and changed the lyrics. The third single, “Ice in the Sun” is also pretty good – it went to #8 in the UK and to #70 in the US. Other songs are OK too but “Gentleman Joe’s Sidewalk Café” sounds 100% like a Beatles ripoff, “Paradise Flat” channels Cream and Jimi Hendrix plus a dash of Jim Morrison spoken “poetry,” and “Spicks and Specks” is a cover a very early Bee Gees song (but could have been by the Monkees.) All that said, it’s a fun, bright and cheery record that is a great snapshot of the era.

The Limboos “Off the Loop” 2024. Penniman Records. Madrid, Spain-based garage-soul, exotic r&b, psychedelic pop. Basically the kitchen sink of genres. Off the Loop is the 5-piece group’s fourth LP. I’m completely unfamiliar with this band – the album was a gift from some Spanish travels – so I can’t say anything about how it compares to their previous material. According to their Bandcamp page, on Off the Loop “they inaugurate a new cycle that confirms the restlessness and nonconformity of the band in the search for their own sound. How to define ‘Off the Loop’? The nine songs and 35 minutes of music included here reflect this broad perspective: lysergic passages, baroque pop, and beautifully crafted psychedelia intertwine with cinematic atmospheres, fuzz guitars, galactic keyboards and unique arrangements. In short, The Limboos’ sound has reached a place you never suspected.” My top pick is the almost-title track “In the Loop” which has a funky psych-garage vibe, followed by the hard, blues rocker “Stranded (I’m Moving On)” which also has more than a nod to psychedelia to it (love that 60’s organ sound). “Hangin’ Up” has a really laid-back soul-meets-psych groove and “Red Line” is a pretty decent ass-shaker.

Calliope Musicals “Color/Sweat” 2019. Rhyme & Reason Records. Psychedelic indie-pop. I’m pretty sure we picked up this album from the band when they played Cactus Club in July 2019…and it’s been sitting, sealed, in my to-do box ever since. Color/Sweat is the Texas “party folk band’s” second release. I think we first saw them play in 2017 or 2018 at Mile of Music and they are so fun live. Stage props, wild outfits and costumes. And then of course the Jerry Bomb — it’s hard to explain (go to a show) — but for an general idea, here’s a photo from that Cactus show:

Calliope Musicals at Cactus Club 2019

Color/Sweat is almost as much fun as a Calliope Musicals performance – highly danceable, dreamy, swirly pop with an edge to the shimmer. I can’t believe it’s taken me almost 5 years to take a listen. Singer Carrie Fussell’s voice is beautiful, lots of depth with a soaring range and the rest of the band is having an absolute ball backing her. I’m sure they played a bunch of songs from this record in 2019 but I absolutely cannot remember which those would have been. Top tracks include the opener “Fear This Body” and the title track “Color/Sweat,” the all-out dance party “That’s Why We Dance.”

Joshua Powell “Skeleton Party” 2021. Romanus Records. Limited edition (50 copies) tri-color variant. Dream pop with an edge out of Indianapolis. Whispers of psychedelia that one writer described as a “fever dream with experimental sounds weaving a story” (there’s theremin!) and lyrics that are intentionally poetic: Joshua Powell says “Songwriting is not very emotional for me. It isn’t a cathartic process. I look at it as academic or intellectual work. I want it to be beautiful and sound but I want it to be something I’m proud of as well.” (From an interview on Pattern) Despite having been written and recorded during the pandemic (Powell: “The world was a big hell mouth at the time of recording”), the darkness of Skeleton Party is far from depressing, more folky goth-inspired lush and dense with some swirly rainbow brightness glistening at the edges; the liner notes state that “this record has been certified as a magical artifact by all pertinent boards and covens of mages, clerics, witches and shamans.” My favorite tracks are the opener “Sad Boy at the Skeleton Party” (such a great title!), the danceable – and at times hard-rocking – “Coral Castle” and another guitar-forward, Pink Floyd-ish complex prog-rocker “Nine of Swords.” My only real criticism of Skeleton Party is the occasional use of autotune (i.e. at the end of the otherwise stellar song “Rainbow Trout“) of which I am never ever a fan. We’ve seen Joshua Powell play live at least once – at Romanus Fest in Indy, 2018 or 2019, I can’t remember! – and I think another time, at Mile of Music maybe? We were hoping to catch them play again this year but sadly missed out when they came through our town. Powell and his crew did stay at my friend’s home after their Appleton performance this fall and she reported that they are the sweetest group of guys ever, great houseguests 😊

It was her first performance and visit back to MKE since she moved to NYC just before the pandemic. The night and her concert were perfection. It’s not often that you find yourself in a magic moment and realize it while it is happening but Saturday night at Humboldt Park was one of those special times. The photo below doesn’t do any justice whatsoever but the sun had just set, the heat of the day had broken – just a lovely warm breeze (and no mosquitos biting!), we were in the company of friends and neighbors with Abby’s clear, bluesy voice soaring through the atmosphere.

She performed songs from her 2019 full-length album (Music Box Dancer), debuted brand-new songs, and sang these two covers. “Somebody to Love,” originally by Jefferson Airplane (1967) is a faithful, summer of love psychedelia rendition, though Abby somehow manages to both recreate Grace Slick’s crystal-sharp voice and infuse her own warm, bluesy range into the vocals. “Stop and Listen” (also from ‘67) is a cover by Milwaukee’s own, The Shag. It’s garagey pop, delightful and danceable.

Prince “Around the World in a Day” 1985. Prince’s 7th LP and his second with the Revolution, Around the World in a Day went to #1 in the US and to #5 in the UK (and re-charted at #51 after Prince’s death in 2016). Swirly, funky psychedelic pop, it’s an album I admit to not thinking much about beyond the hits until relatively recently (I was far too into British new wave in ‘85) and now have a much greater appreciation for its complexity in the context of 80′s pop. I also now realize that this record probably inspired my 14-year-old self’s fashion choices (my friends and I wore a LOT of paisley that year). The singles are amazing of course: “Raspberry Beret” (#2 US, #25 UK) is a classic that I still listen to frequently, “Pop Life” (#7 US, #60 UK) and “America” (#46 US). “Paisley Park,” another great track, was a single only in the UK, Europe and Australia; it hit #18 in the UK and #38 in Australia. I also really love the funky groove of “Tamborine.”

Space Raft “Positively Space Raft” 2020/2017. Dusty Medical Records. Part of the Dusty Medical Records Library Archive/Lost Records series, limited edition (200 copies). Both Space Raft and DMR are based in our Milwaukee neighborhood so we got the extra-special bonus of a personal porch drop-off of this release this past weekend. Space Raft recorded the LP back in the fall of 2017 but for probably a variety of reasons, it’s just been released on vinyl (also available for download from their Bandcamp page). They also just had a successful Kickstarter for their own old-school NES game “Space Raft:The Game,” described as “a mix of obstacle based scrolling stages and early arcade top down action stages making use of many recognizable people and places from the Milwaukee music scene. Featuring the band’s jealous old bass player Srini as the villain of the game who has returned to Milwaukee from California to steal the master tapes of the new record. You’ll need to chase down Srini and eat all the sandwiches in order to retrieve the tapes and finally release Positively Space Raft to the public. Each of the 4 members of Space Raft are represented by unique sprites with unique actions and their own color palette to help build characterization.” Positively Space Raft is a really apt title: their music is sunnily upbeat power pop with hooks galore from guitarist/singer Jordan Davis, with a kick of bright swirling psychedelia courtesy of keyboardist TJ Christenson, and a steady 60′s/70′s pop-inspired rhythm section from bassist Jon Heibler and drummer Tyler Chicorel. The whole LP is excellent, but my top tracks are “Please Be Kind,” “It Used to Be Love,” “Transit Trash” and “Highlighter.”
