The Illusion “The Illusion” 1969. Steed Records. Hard psychedelic rock from Long Island. The Illusion was the band’s debut LP and went to no. 69 in the US. They had one hit single from the album, “Did You See Her Eyes” which went to #32; while most of the record was written by the band members that track is from their producer (and owner of Steed Records) Jeff Barry, known for co-writing other 60’s hits like “Do Wah Diddy Diddy,” “Leader of the Pack,” and “River Deep-Mountain High.” That Illusion hit is one of the strongest tracks on the record but the LP is an overall good 60’s rocker: the band toured with other 60’s heavies like The Who and Jimi Hendrix as well as funksters like Sly and the Family Stone. Besides the swirly acid-psych there is also a fair amount of funk and soul on songs like “Talkin’ Sweet Talkin’ Soul” and parts of “Medley: “Run, Run, Run” / “Willy Gee (Miss Holy Lady).” There’s also some poppy 60’s sunny vibes: “Alone” and parts of “Medley: “Why, Tell Me Why” / “The Real Thing,” the former also has some exotic trippy elements that are quite good. However, I really don’t get the whole medley thing that seemed pretty popular around this time, maybe it had something to do with the radio market but I don’t think either of these medleys were released as singles. The Illusion lasted another couple of years, releasing two more records, before splitting up.

Fat Mattress “Fat Mattress” 1969. As if the cover doesn’t make it crystal obvious, Fat Mattress were a psychedelic folk band from England, formed in ’68 by vocalist Neil Landon and guitarist and vocalist Noel Redding, known also as the bassist for the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Hendrix himself appears on one track, “How Can I Live,” credited with “percussion.”

Fat Mattress was the band’s debut LP (they only released one more, in 1970) and it squeaked onto the charts, going to #134 on the US album chart. The sole single, “Magic Forest,” a funky little ass-shaker with trippy hippie lyrics, charted but only in the Netherlands at #11. Less funky and even more trippy English countryside twee (think fairies, gnomes, Stonehenge – you know what I mean) is “Walking Through a Garden” but honestly the whole record is just dripping in late 60’s vibes. It opens with the flute-forward track “All Night Drinker,” the flute performed by Chris Wood, founding member of Traffic. I didn’t know that until I just now looked it up but even before I could hear the Traffic influence woven through much of the rest of the record. “I Don’t Mind” feels like a mashup of Amboy Duke’s “Journey to the Center of the Mind” and all Beatles releases from ’67-’69. “Bright New Way” has an Americana-Grateful Dead-hippie (less twee, more twang) while “Everything’s Blue” leans jangly hard blues rock…a little Them influence maybe. We picked up Fat Mattress at a record store in Appleton (Eroding Winds) over Labor Day weekend – this one might not be staying long in our collection.

Moon Goons “A Daydream Dark” 2021. Limited edition purple marble variant, self-released though another variant was released on Wax Mage Records. Heavy heavy psychedelic rock from Indianapolis. We saw Moon Goons at Romanus Records festival this past August; they put out their 2024 release Lady of Many Faces on the Romanus label. A Daydream Dark is their second LP – very spacey, a bit groovy and definitely trippy (as was their performance at Romanus Fest – the lighting was darkly intense and this was the best I could do for a photo). Their sound is also big – duo guitars, bass, drums and keyboards, with guitarist and primary songwriter Corey Standifer taking lead on vocals most of the time, except for “Finger Puppets” (one of my top tracks) when keyboardist Brooke Rice sings lead. Other top picks include the Gizzard-ish “Voodoo Medicine,” the spooky and exotically menacing “Alien Sewage” (their stage wardrobe consisted of janitorial-like jumpsuits with a weird alien-wizard logo) and another space-themed track “Cosmic Duality” which also has a touch of Sabbath-esque other-worldly evil.

Grateful Dead “Grateful Dead” (aka Skull and Roses) 1971/2021 50th anniversary limited edition yellow vinyl. Today is my birthday so I’m spinning the Dead’s quintessential live album from my birth year. I’m also the only person in our household who likes the Dead and I get to listen to whatever I want to today. Grateful Dead (which the band wanted to title Skull Fuck but that was outright rejected by Warner Bros. for obvious reasons) was the band’s best selling record, charting at #25 in the US. The tracks are live performances from April 1971 at New York’s Fillmore East and Hammerstein Ballrooms plus one song, “Johnny B. Goode,” recorded live at San Fransisco’s Winterland Ballroom. I know all of these songs backwards and forwards, having spent my late teens and early 20’s as a Dead Head-lite – I only went to about 6 or 7 shows between ’89 (at Alpine Valley) and ’92 and only traveled as far as Hamilton, Ontario to see them. That said, a few of the songs on Grateful Dead are some of my absolute favorites: “Bertha,” “Mama Tried” (originally by Merle Haggard) and “Playing in the Band” from the 1st of the 4 sides are all Dead classics. Side 2’s “The Other One” at almost 20 minutes in length is another classic but I’ll admit to spacing out/taking a bathroom break during it, just like I would during their concerts (or during “Drums/Space” – same deal). I don’t mind the noodling but it just goes on…so long. Anyway Side 3 gets back to the fun stuff, especially the aforementioned “Johnny B. Goode.” Their rendition of “Me & Bobby McGee” is ok but I did grow up on Janis Joplin’s version in heavy rotation so that will always be my preferred version. Side 4 is fantastic: the mellow-psych meandering of “Wharf Rat” is an awesome trip and the iconic cover of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away” which has always been on of my top Dead picks, with the excellent dual Bo Diddley drums undercurrent with Jerry’s guitar lightly soaring overhead that morphs into the record’s final cut, “Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad.”

Here’s the Dead playing “Not Fade Away” at Alpine Valley in ’89:

Moon Goons “Lady of Many Faces” 2024. Romanus Records, limited edition tricolor variant. Heavy psychedelic + spacey prog rock from Indianapolis, their third LP. If the little gnome-like wizard drawings on the cover weren’t enough of a clue, Lady of Many Faces is a fantastical trip into what I can only describe as medieval space, a cross between Devo and Black Sabbath. With song titles like “Telesmatic Figures,” “Hidden Hermit of the Hills” and “Wizard Prison” (which is one of my favorites), the imagery is a mushroom trip with steroids and synths. Space age bleep bloops one second, epic heavy metal shredding guitar the next. Wild shit! Every song is a journey, with twist, turns, and startling creatures jumping out of the darkness when least expected. While likely categorized as stoner rock (besides the other labels I’ve already slapped on above), I can’t even imagine zoning out while listening to Lady of Many Faces: it’s way too interesting. I also won’t put the “experimental rock” label on it (though it clearly is very unique, edgy and explorative) because, well, it somehow makes sense in all of its glorious weirdness. There are melodies, harmonies and clear beats (though those beats change – a lot), giving the album an element of pop. Though I can’t imagine any of these songs will make to a Top 40 playlist, ever.

The band itself seems to view their record through a prog-rock lens that’s got 50ish years of blurry goo smeared on it, never cleaned from back in the era of the 70’s epic concept album. From an article on Nuvo, frontman Corey Standifer says of the plot of Lady of Many Faces (inspired by keyboardist Brooke Rice’s dream of a three-faced woman), “There’s the Wizard, who is unfortunately in his own prison. He’s pure, but he doesn’t know it yet. Same with the ‘Hidden Hermit of the Hills.’ He’s a total nomad of sorts, who lives by his own book. But the Lady [of Many Faces] needs him in order to fulfill this prophecy of good and spreading your true potential. The ‘Doom Tomb Giant,’ however, is wanting to take that away from them. The song ‘Phantom Erasion’ is essentially the concept of wiping away all the negative forces within your life and really trying to tackle that as best as you can. The Lady has many faces, so [that equates to] many characters and many concepts. But she represents really digging inside of your inner self and exploiting your selfless soul.”

Here’s the entire album, performed in order at their record release show in Indy in November 2024.

Frankie and the Witch Fingers “Trash Classic” 2025. Very limited edition “Killer Kiwi” splattered vinyl via Levitation. The Reverberation Appreciation Society / Greenway Records. Hard rocking garage psych. FATWF’s latest, released just a few days ago, and their, like, 100th record — just kidding, but they have a big catalog of studio, live and other stuff so it’s hard to keep track. Trash Classic is wild and weird. Non-stop high energy, as always, but very angular, herky-jerky…the word “Devo” has popped into my head more than once. There was even a whisper or two of 70’s Rush/Floyd prog rock. And punk. And metal. Truly bizarre, and truly great. If there is a typical FATWF sound, that would be most reflected on the opener “Channel Rot” – buzzy garage guitars meets 60’s organ psych (of course that sound is woven through most of the record, too). “Fucksake” is great and has a 70’s metal/hard rock sound, a bit like Sabbath but trippier; “Gutter Priestess” also has a lot of rock elements, with a dash of Devo. We get more Devo-spiration but on heavy acid with “Economy” and “Total Reset.” “Out of the Flesh” goes trippy punk with a dancing chainsaw buzz. “Conducting Experiments” is a funky ass-shaker with some 70’s/80’s new wave bleep bloops (Devo but with more soul). And the title track “Trash Classic” is just bat shit crazy – epically lengthen, blending space/math/nerd rock, proggy space rock, punk, garage, psychedelia and the kitchen sink. The word “unhinged” appears in the Bandcamp/Levitation press release and that’s about as accurate as anything to sum up Trash Classic.

Recorded the basics in one take, warts and all. Thrashing around with a crowd of free spirits reminds us we can push back against the parasitic noise trying to keep us controlled—this is a little slice of that in recorded form.” “i-Candy” is a sassy bopper, with some Devo-esque synths and a swirly infectious danceable beat. “This was one of the first songs to emerge from the incubator of recent demos. ‘i-Candy’ is a female sex robot, she isn’t programmed for any man’s need; she’s out to clean up the streets and settle the score in blood.” So fun!

Frankie Sunswept & The Silver Moons “Nostalgia” 2025, limited edition “Kaleidoscopic Sunset” vinyl, Romanus Records (sort of).* Dreamy psych garage: think King Gizzard but much lighter and brighter. Like tripping at the beach on a sunny day (vs late, dark nights under starry skies with the Lizard Wizards). Frankie Sunswept has a cazillion releases under various headings: solo under that moniker, under what I think is his real name (Frank Hoier) and then as part of the band Crushed Out, who were active from 2010 until 2018. The Silver Moons is his latest project, a six piece that formed in 2024 in New York. Their what I suppose can be called debut album, Nostalgia, seems to be a mix of previously released Sunswept solo material, including the title track “Nostalgia” originally released in 2019, both “Dream Eyes” (great psych-pop!) and “Melting Summer” from 2020 (1970s tropical/Mediterranean trippy), and “Dog Days” from 2021. Others seem to be newer material, like “Tears of a Crocodile” and my top pick, “Futureless” which is has a super kicked back cool hypnotic psych vibe.

*The Romanus label does not appear anywhere on the record, cover or lyric insert. However I got the LP directly from the Romanus label so I know they manufactured and distributed it. Not sure why Frankie didn’t include it as the label for this release; his previous solo release Turning from 2021 does sport the Romanus label.

O.R.B. “Tailem Bend” 2024. Fuzz Club Records, red vinyl. Heavy psychedelic stoner rock via Australia. Tailem Bend is the band’s fourth LP, released six years after their previous release in 2018 The Space Between for which they toured supporting King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard (a perfect pairing). Since I’m not familiar with that record or their earlier releases, I’m relying a bit on other reviewers; apparently this record is a bit of a departure from their historically doom rock sound, adding in some more dreamy, pop melodies. A lot of the record is late-night-drive hypnotic but there’s some light jangle and melody on songs like “Karma Comes” and “Skyclock” (both have a 60’s Sgt. Peppers era Beatles vibe) and some ass-shaking funk – “You Do” grooves hard. But there is plenty of heavy heavy doom — Sabbath level — on tracks like “Morph” and “Commandment.” My top track on Tailem Bend is the danceable garage-psych rocker “Can’t Do That.”

We saw Fontaines D.C. perform this past Sunday at The Sylvee in Madison (I won the tickets from the Sylvee’s Instagram) – our first time at that venue (it’s great!), my first time seeing Fontaines (Joe’s second). The show was….OK. The opener was [yawn] and Fontaines were fine. Both channeling a 90’s sloppy rave kid vibe. I didn’t have that high of expectations because I’ve found their last two releases (Skinty Fia, 2022 and Romance, 2024) to be lackluster and a bit boring. A Hero’s Death is pretty good, though not as exciting as their debut Dogrel (2019). Definitely more psychedelic with some good rocking moments. It went to #2 in the UK and hit #44 on the US Indie chart; it was nominated for a Grammy in 2021 and received widespread critical acclaim including 5 out of 5 stars from The Guardian. As is my preference, my top picks are the rockers. “Televised Mind” is great psych rock, and while pretty messy, I also like the upbeat swirly tracks “A Lucid Dream” and “Living in America” plus the Velvet-esque “I Was Not Born.” They released two singles from A Hero’s Death: the downbeat and angular opener “I Don’t Belong” which only charted in their native Ireland at #86, and the title track “A Hero’s Death” which is one of my other favorites from the LP – it’s an odd pick for a single with a driving beat, fuzzy psych guitars, and some ooo-aaa harmony backing vocals behind more spoken than sung vocals. That track sort of charted – going to #67 on the UK “Download Singles” chart, to #90 in Ireland and #30 in Scotland.
