The Chats “4573” 2016/2020. EP, limited edition reissue on “bong water” colored vinyl. Bargain Bin Records. The Australian young punks’ first release from 2016 (digital only) “recorded in a high school studio in a few hours” about a month before they graduated from high school. And it totally sounds like that, too! Raw, lo-fi flat and tinny sound but great tunes. I love The Chats and am currently wishing it was 6 months ago when we saw them in Vegas when it was 95 degrees, probably closer to 100 standing on the hot pavement at the Punk Rock bowling side stage. 4573 is seven quick, somewhat jangly punky pub-rock (or as they call it “shed rock”) tunes (they have gotten much harder and much faster since 2016). My top track is “Mum Stole My Darts” which is hilarious and also most like what they would evolve into: songs about smokes (also popular Chats topics include food, being broke) that are short, simple and sharp. “I Feel Good” is also good – a real garage-rock ass-shaker, as is the more grungy (and yes, anthemic) “VB Anthem.”

Amyl and the Sniffers “Cartoon Darkness” 2024. Limited edition “Scared of the Darkness” glow-in-the-dark vinyl. I needed some angry, snotty, funny modern punk today. Cartoon Darkness is the band’s third studio LP. It’s been nominated for the J Awards’ Australian Album of the Year and went to #2 in Australia, #9 in the UK (it barely squeaked into the top 200 in the US). We’ve seen Amyl perform a few times and will be seeing them again in May 2025; based on their latest release it’s going to be total ripper (as always). I have a lot of favorites on Cartoon Darkness. The opener “Jerkin'” is balls-to-wall rock, its lyrics nasty AF – dumb but hilarious: “You’re a dumb c**t, you’re an asshole. Everytime you talk you mumble, grumble. Need to wipe your mouth after you speak cuz it’s an asshole. Bum hole, dumb c**t. You are ugly all day, I am hot always…” you get the idea. You’ll have to go to Amyl’s website to see the original X-rated video and confirm you’re over 18 to watch it and read a content warning (it’s fine, just natural body parts in all their glory). “Motorbike Song” is another rocker with easy to understand lyrical metaphors (“Can you be the bike, can you be the f**k. I wanna feel like the moty-b going down the highway, going over speed). “Doing in Me Head” has a killer buzzy guitar hook and “Pigs” is a classic punk/speed metal thrasher. Amyl and the Sniffers do occasionally slow down on Cartoon Darkness – “Big Dreams” reminds me of 90’s girl-grunge (ie Hole in particular) and they even get prettily funky on “Bailing on Me.” And while the final track “Me and the Girls” is not in my top musically (the electronic effects are a bit disconcerting), I love its female-forward, f**k off message – plus an infectious beat.

The Professionals “The Professionals” 1980/1997. Steve Jones and Paul Cook post-Pistols band’s second album, though they originally recorded it in 1980 as their debut album; it was not officially released until 1997 because a legal dispute with bassist Andy Allan over unpaid royalties (a limited edition bootleg version was released in 1991, which we also have in our collection). Because of the legal squabble, the band replaced Allan with Subway Sect bassist Paul Myers, along with a second guitarist, Ray McVeigh. The new line up re-recorded the material, some of which appeared on a new record released in ‘81, I Didn’t See It Coming.

The Professionals is punky power pop and hard pub rock, nowhere near as subversively snotty as the Pistols but still brash and cocky with some anthemic swagger – “Kick Down the Doors” and “Kamikaze” both good examples. They released two singles from the LP in ’80, “Just Another Dream” and “1-2-3.” I don’t think either charted (and omg the video for “Just Another Dream!”). “All the Way With You” is one of the stronger tracks on the LP and feels more “punk” than most of the record (it reminds me a bit of the 1977 Adverts single “Gary Gilmore’s Eyes”). You’d think that “Mods Skins Punks” would be, but it’s not (and really isn’t a great track). This is in our should it stay or go pile – I think it can go.

The Sleeveens “The Sleeveens” 2024. Dirtnap Records, yellow vinyl Green Noise Records exclusive. Released just about a week ago, The Sleeveens is the debut from Nashville/Dublin pub-punk rockers and we had the extreme pleasure of catching them last night at Last Rites here in Milwaukee. The show was blistering good fun, nonstop ass-shaking as they blasted through most of the tracks from the LP. Most tracks are short, sharp, a bit snotty and absolutely ripping. I was able to catch my favorite song from The Sleeveens on video, the Sex Pistolish “Tales From the Megaplex”

They also played their single “Give My Regards to the Dancing Girls,” the 60’s style garagey “Looking for Porno?” which weirdly is a total ear worm (I woke up with it playing in my head this morning), the anthemic “Dry Cider,” the rager “Full Dollar,” and “Haunted Neighborhood” plus a slew of other hard pub rockers.

Their bio from their Bandcamp: “When Irish-born Count Vaseline/The Mighty Stef songwriter Stef Murphy met Stiff Little Fingers guitar tech Jamie Mechan in Nashville, Tennessee, it began a musical partnership of the highest order. After cranking out a few tunes at Mechan’s fledgling studio, 302 Sound, the duo started recruiting other musicians. The band was rounded out by drummer Ryan Sweeney (Cheap Time) and Eli Steele (Sweet Knives.) Dubbing themselves The Sleeveens, an Irish term for a trixter, the band got to work. After recording and releasing their highly-touted “Give My Regards To The Dancing Girls” 45rpm single on Sweeney’s Sweet Time Records, they finished off their 11 track debut LP. The quartet were soon approached by longrunning punk label Dirtnap Records (Marked Men, Exploding Hearts) for the album’s 2024 release. The resulting LP is an homage to the kind of classic punk Chiswick, New Rose and Stiff Records were releasing 45 years before The Sleeveens existed. With earworm melodies and screaming guitars, the foursome have crafted one of the best albums of the year. Murphy’s penchant for charmingly brilliant, matter-of-fact lyricism has a similar poetic quality as Mark E. Smith or Jonathan Richman. With expert mastering by Jim Diamond (The White Stripes, The Dirtbombs) to put the finishing touches on the sound, The Sleeveens is a record that is simultaneously uncompromisingly raw and thoughtfully crafted.”

I got a chance to chat with Ryan Sweeney and James Mechan before the show – both super-nice guys! – mostly about touring the Midwest in February (them – “Milwaukee is cold!”) and Nashville (me – “there’s a great yoga studio there!”) (all of us – “the gangs of bachelorettes are the worst!”). We nabbed a couple of t-shirts and stuffed some bills in the pitcher passed around by the green mohawked owner(?)/bartender: Last Rites doesn’t sell tickets or collect at the door (at least not for this show). I hope The Sleeveens had a great time in Milwaukee and come back again soon – they totally rock!

Dr. Feelgood “Malpractice” 1975. Bluesy pub-rock with lots of harmonica, today’s spin for Dr. Feelgood’s guitarist and songwriter Wilko Johnson who died last week on November 21st. Malpractice was their second LP; it went to #17 in the UK. This style of gritty 70’s rock isn’t my usual fare so this is actually my first-ever listen to the album though it’s probably been in our collection for years. There’s a few covers including the Delta blues standard “Rolling and Tumbling” first recorded by Hambone Willien Newbern and later, more famously, recorded by both Muddy Waters and Cream; “Watch Your Step” which was a hit for Bobby Parker in ’61; and “Riot in Cell Block #9” written by Leiber and Stoller and recorded first by The Robins in ’54 and later by such artists as The Grateful Dead, Wanda Jackson, Johnny Cash and Flat Duo Jets. Most of the originals were mostly all or in part written by Wilko Johnson like the single “Back in the Night” (it failed to chart), “Because You’re Mine” (co-written by Nick Lowe and Sparks) and “You Shouldn’t Call the Doctor (If You Can’t Afford the Bills).”

The Stranglers “6 Songs” 1986. Comp EP, Liberty Records, Greek import. Today, August 28th, is Stranglers’ vocalist/guitarist Hugh Cornwell’s 70th birthday (b. 1949). UK pub rock goes punk goes new wave/post punk, this EP is a collection of singles from the 70′s through 80′s. On Side A: “Nice ‘n’ Sleazy,” which went to #18 in the UK in ‘78 and appeared on their LP Black and White; “Strange Little Girl,” a single from ‘82 that hit #7 (UK) and was originally written back in ‘74, the year The Stranglers formed; and “No More Heroes,” one of my favorite Strangler songs, all swirly keyboards, which went to #8 and was the title track from the 1977 album No More Heroes. On Side B: “Golden Brown,” a decidedly unpunk single that hit #2 in the UK in early ‘82 (their highest chart hit), it’s a sweet Donovan-esque lilting number with baroque harpsichord, some psychedelic guitar and saxophone; “Hanging Around,” definitely more of a rocker which appeared on their 1977 debut Rattus Norvegicus; and “La Folie,” an ephemeral 1982 single from their album of the same name (released in late ‘81) which went to #47 in the UK and was sung in French by bassist Jean-Jacques Burnel.

Squeeze “Cool for Cats” 1979. I’ve pulled Squeeze’s second album today for a couple of random reasons: 1) we were on vacation out of the country last week and it was amazing and gorgeous but I really missed our cats and 2) because the Vault doubles as a guest room and my folks had to spend the night due to crazy early/late flight departures, the large boxes of overflow records that usually occupies the floor in front of the “S” section is currently vacant to make space for visitors allowing me to more easily grab a record from that section. By April, when the 40th anniversary of this record’s release hits, I have a feeling Cool for Cats won’t be as effortless to procure.

Cool for Cats was very successful in the UK; it went to #45 on the album chart with four hit singles. Overall the album is very Britishly bright early new wave with pub rock roots, a little goofy (especially tracks like “It’s Not Cricket” and “It’s So Dirty”) in the spirit of Monty Python, The Young Ones, etc. – oddball and delightful with the addition of some boogie woogie piano. The first single, “Goodbye Girl,” went to #63 though a different version appears on the LP. The title track “Cool for Cats” became one of Squeeze’s biggest hits, going to #2 in the UK. I don’t think it charted in the US but I totally remember hearing this song back then. “Up the Junction” was the third single and also went to #2 in the UK. The final single, “Slap and Tickle” went to #24 and apparently is either a euphemism for sex or police brutality (based on the lyrics I’m guessing Squeeze meant the former).

The Stranglers “The Stranglers” 1977. 4-song 7″ EP on marbled pink vinyl. The writing on the back sleeve is delightful: “THIS is the Stranglers’ first EP. (The initials ‘EP’ stand for ‘extended play,’ which means you get four songs on a seven-inch platter, and you spin it at 331/3 revolutions-per-minute.) Two of the tracks contained herein – ‘Hanging Around’ and ‘(Get a) Grip (on Yourself)’ – originally appeared on Rattus Norvegicus, the Stranglers’ first album. ‘Something Better Change’ is a key tune on the second album, No More Heroes. Last but not least is ‘Straighten Out,’ which does not appear on either album. It goes without saying that this EP should be played as loudly as conditions permit. NOTE: This EP has a special label; viewing the lable while the record is revolving may result in slight dizziness (especially if record is rotated at speeds in excess of 78 rpm).” (I played it at normal speed and can confidently say I did not get dizzy.)

The Stranglers have been around for, like, ever, having formed in 1974 as a pub rock band and then were propelled to commercial success with the rise of punk rock in the mid-70′s, opening for the Ramones and Patti Smith while they toured the UK. “(Get a) Grip (On Yourself)” was their first single, hitting #44 on the UK charts and “Something Better Change” hit #9 (this single was a double A-side with “Straighten Out” in the UK and was also released with “No More Heroes” as its B-side.)

After playing in a few bands and playing solo throughout the 60′s and 70′s, Edmunds collaborated with Nick Lowe and formed Rockville, along with Billy Bremner and Terry Williams, playing “rip-roaring, rampaging rock-n-roll” live in the late 70′s and then recorded Seconds of Pleasure. The band split soon after due to management problems.

Seconds of Pleasure reached #27 on the US Billboard pop chart, the sweet single “Teacher Teacher” (a Gene Chandler cover) hitting #51 in 1981. The album is classic pop rock-n-roll, including a cover of original rockin’ rhythm and bluesman Chuck Berry’s “Oh What a Thrill.” Reviewers and critics always categorize Rockpile into rock-n-roll and pub rock but also add in the tags of new wave and punk. I can’t say that I agree with those last two labels (though “When I Write the Book” is new wave-ish in the Nick Lowe/Elvis Costello vein I suppose), this is straight-up fun and rollicking traditional rock.
