C.O.F.F.I.N “Children of Finland Fighting in Norway” 2020. Legless Records “recycled mish mash blue” vinyl variant. Hard and furious punk/metal garage rock from Sydney, Australia. Their Discogs bio says “psychotic skate punk & pub thrash band” – this, too, checks. We caught C.O.F.F.I.N in 2022 when they opened for Amyl and the Sniffers at Logan Square Auditorium in Chicago. Great pairing (and weird venue)! Both influenced by 70’s hard rock, most especially Motörhead, but C.O.F.F.I.N feels heavier, more brutal than Amyl. Possibly because the lead singer is also the drummer.

Children of Finland Fighting in Norway (sort of self-titled) is the band’s fifth LP since forming in 2005. My top picks are the wild “People and Their Stories,” the album opener “Fast Love,” the speed-metal/punk “Dead Land,” the somewhat exotic and fully punk “Headland,” and the all-out, balls to the wall speed metal on crack “Average Death.” They do slow down occasionally: “Ransack Blues” is down n’ dirty garage blues, with growl and swagger, but it’s like they can’t help themselves and midway through the track the tempo double-times and morphs into metal punk that would make Lemmy proud.

Atomo-Guano Records. Artwork by underground comix legend XNO (Chet Darmstaedter) whose character Brain-Bat inspired the band’s name. Mini comic written by Brain Bats singer Dillon Hallen. This is the debut 7″ by Milwaukee thrashy punk-garage-metal band Brain Bats: it’s brief and gut-punching brutal (or, as guitarist Gian Pogliano states, “fast, loud and weird”). I picked this up last weekend at RushMor Records in Bay View, where singer Dillon also works. The band played RushMor’s stage last fall at the Bay View Bash and Dillon has a hilarious, if excruciating story, about that show, the band’s first (from an article in Milwaukee Record): “I had the shits the whole fucking day at the street fest. I had to shit so bad, in the heat, and I was trying to find some baby powder or something. I could barely walk my ass was so chafed. Finally we found this baby powder and I’m just going to town and someone walked in on me all bent over, sweaty, spreading baby powder on my ass before we had to go on stage. There’s a video of us playing. If you watch, you can tell from my movements I’m in pain.” You can view part of that performance here as they play “Night of the Vampire” by Roky Erickson.

L7 will be playing in Milwaukee this weekend and a lot of my cool kid friends (some bringing their actual kids) are going, but we will be outta town so will rely on hearing about the show from them.

L7 is the band’s debut album: gritty grunge-punk full of heavy riot grrrl swagger. I’m partial to a few of their later releases but there are some great ass-kicking tracks on this record. “Bite the Wax Tadpole” is crazy frenzied energy (bite the wax tadpole = Chinese translation of Coca Cola, thanks internet!), “Let’s Rock Tonight” and “Runnin’ From the Law” are a bad girl’s call to party, “Uncle Bob” is ton-of-bricks heavy and “Snake Handler” is probably my favorite track, asking all dangerously sexy “Are you a snake? Are you a man?”

Reduced to Equality is loud, fast and brutal (if the cover wasn’t a good enough clue). You can listen to and purchase the record here but the bandcamp site does not include the little gem at the very end of Side B: a voicemail to Dan from some irate guy who just goes off, calling himself a sacrificial lamb because Dan offered him $5 for an Iron Maiden album and rambles on about nuclear weapons and aliens. It is weird. So Happy Birthday Dan! and I hope good triumphs over evil and the aliens don’t get you or whatever.

Jane’s Addiction “Mountain Song” b/w “Standing in the Shower…Thinking” 1988, from the band’s first studio album Nothing’s Shocking. I distinctly remember hearing this song for the first time: my friend Erika was driving us from high school to downtown Appleton. As we crossed the College Avenue bridge that goes over the Fox River, “Mountain Song” came on and she CRANKED it – the windows in her crappy, beat-up blue Chevette almost blew out. It’s anthemic, dark, moody and majestic, full of sweat and fury. “Standing in the Shower…Thinking” is another favorite JA song of mine – an inevitable ass-shaking ear worm for when I’m actually standing in the shower…thinking. (But I always sing “the water is so fucking hot, the water is so fucking hot” and then turn down the temp a bit)

Standing in the shower thinking
About a man I know don’t like me
He don’t like the place I’m headed
Same place he’s headed…
I know he’d beat me to it
If he could but he won’t do it
But he would man
If he could…
And the water is piping hot..
The water is piping hot
It beats upon my neck
And I’m pissing on myself…
Standing
In the shower
Thinking…
