“Guerrilla Girls! She-Punks & Beyond 1975-2016” 2023. Ace Records on Rough Trade exclusive edition splatter vinyl. A compilation of 25 punk tracks by all (or mostly all) women-led punk bands. A lot I’m familiar with, mostly the older stuff like Patti Smith, X-Ray Spex, The Slits, and a few I’m not (We’ve Got a Fuzzbox and We’re Gonna Use It, The Tuts). It’s a double LP so packed with material so here are my highlights, in (mostly) chronological and LP organizational order. The great Patti Smith leads off the comp in the 70’s with “Gloria” (seeing her sing this live last month was epic). I’m always thrilled to have anything on vinyl by The Bags since actual physical, stand-alone releases by them are practically non-existent so “Survive” is very very appreciated. I’m always surprised when Blondie is included on punk comps (they are so new wave/pop!) but Debbie Harry never disappoints and the track “I Didn’t Have The Nerve To Say No” isn’t one I’ve already heard on the radio a million times so it’s nice to have here. As we move into the 80’s: the Bangles have a track, too, (again, not punk in my mind) the surfy instrumental “Bitchen Summer (Speedway)” and it’s just OK but novel enough for a mention. The Slits are always great, included is “Earthbeat” as are Bush Tetras with “Das Ah Riot.” Au Pairs’ “Shakedown” is a real ass-shaker. Not necessarily punk, in fact way more jangly 60’s hippie garage, is “It’s About Time” by The Pandoras and I love it. Then we move into late 80’s/early 90’s riot grrrl era with the raucous “Her Jazz” by Huggy Bear, massively angry Babes in Toyland’s “Bruise Violet,” the anthem “Rebel Girl” by Bikini Kill and one of my all-time favorite songs by any group, L7’s “Pretend We’re Dead.” We have a bunch of all of these tracks on the original album upon which they appeared but some of the more obscure stuff is pretty great to have compiled in one spot.

Death Valley Girls “Street Venom” 2014/2021. Limited edition (200 copies) “Eye of the Beholder” colored vinyl. DVG’s debut album, originally released on cassette (Burger Records). Fuzzy garage punk with grungy riot grrrl and psycho-surf energy (Hole’s drummer Patty Schemel was in the band and performs on the record), Street Venom is as fantastic as DVG’s subsequent releases. “Sanitarium Blues,” one of my favorite tracks, is about singer/keyboardist Bonnie Bloomgarden’s stint in an actual sanitarium. From her Instagram: “When I was a kid, I ended up in a mental institution! I eventually found out that I am bipolar and extremely empathetic. Life just got too intense/scary to know how to deal with alone! I didn’t know how to get help or that help would work.” Other top tracks include the buzzy garage ass-shakers “Shadow” and “Girlfriend.” This reissue/deluxe version includes two songs not on the original 2014 cassette release but were a limited edition 7″ single in 2015: “Electric High” and “Gettin’ Hard” and both are an excellent addition to the LP.

Fox Face “End of Man” 2021. Dirtnap Records. Red/black swirled vinyl (exclusive from Green Noise Records). I literally just grabbed this from my porch – released on January 22nd, I’ve been anticipating Fox Face’s second LP delivery and holy shit does it deliver! Blistering female-forward Milwaukee punk, Fox Face can stand toe-to-toe with their Riot Grrrl foremothers L7, Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland, etc. We’ve seen Fox Face play around town several times (not recently, obviously) and their record stands up to their excellent live shows; they successfully harness the noise and fury onto vinyl that often is only captured on stage. And there’s been A LOT to be furious about this past year…Fox Face channeled that rage onto so many great tracks that I’m tempted to name every single one. But if I have to choose: “SWF” for sure, “Fan the Flames” definitely (shredding guitar solo!). “Johnson Death Farm” is an ass-shaker, catchy as hell with an excellent bass groove. Then there’s the malicious slow-churn of “We Do Nothing,” the break-neck lead single “Not Your Home” and the head-banging title track “End of Man.”

While probably a bit biased, the reviewer on the Green Noise Records website totally nails it and is worth quoting here: “…holy fuck, holy fox face, this album rips, ripped out my brain and made my day, scraped my brain from my skull and slapped it on a platter, red and black swirl indeed, stick my head in that batter and call me baked, slap a bow on my ass and call it an early Christmas, these women are obviously not messing around, the goods have been delivered, teeth fang and claw, once bitten twice delighted, welcome to the planet of Fox Face, this is obviously their world, and I’m just happy I get to live on it…As the sleeve art suggests this is a monster from the Rust Belt, impossible to ignore as it thunders into your eardrums, driving riffs into the punk rock, lifting it up on a bottom thick as plate iron and powering forward, shaking like an earthquake. Take cover, a big one is coming.”

L7 “Best of the Slash Years” 2000/2019 reissue, limited edition on green vinyl. This comp of hard-rocking, grungy punk/alt-metal songs pulls tracks from L7′s three albums on Slash Records: Bricks are Heavy (’92, produced by Butch Vig), Hungry for Stink (’94) and The Beauty Process: Triple Platinum (’97). It starts out with one of the greatest riot grrrl anthems ever, “Pretend We’re Dead,” from Bricks are Heavy which went to #8 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart in ‘92 and hit #21 on the UK singles chart. Also from Bricks are Heavy are “Mr. Integrity,” “Monster” and “Everglade.” I love Hungry for Stink and pulled from that LP are “Andres” (#20 US Alternative Songs chart and #34 UK singles chart), one of my favorites “Fuel My Fire” as well as “Freak Magnet” and “Can I Run.” I’m not as familiar with The Beauty Process – I’m not sure we have it in our collection – but the tracks from that album are almost as brutal, a tad more melodic than L7′s earlier work and also a bit heavy on the drinking theme: “Bad Things,” “Off the Wagon,” “Moonshine” and “Bitter Wine” (OK, “Moonshine” isn’t actually about the contraband liquor but the titles’ trajectory does work nicely for a boozing narrative).

From their liner notes: “The term spoil + destroy is taken from a witch-hunting manual that, to paraphrase, states that even good witches who do not ‘spoil and destroy, but save and deliver’ should be killed. That resonated with us – the idea that, as a woman, your achievements are irrelevant because of your gender.” The tracks on the album back up this sentiment, with grit and without apology, a giant middle finger fuck you to the age of Trumpism. “(What You’re) Good For” leads off the record, bouncing with infectious rage. “Clever Girl” has an ominous groove and seethes with glorious feminist fury (this is probably my favorite track on the record but there are several runners-up). “Hiawatha” is beautifully haunting, deliciously dark. “Boogie Man” and “Girl Hater” are even darker, violently so as the beat revs up to head banging punk. The hashtag of 2016 appears on “Nasty Woman” as does the sane person’s response to climate deniers on “I Believe in Science.” While not my favorite song on the LP, Fox Face’s cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” is intriguing, reimagining the princess hit as a witchy antidote to pop poison.

L7 will be playing in Milwaukee this weekend and a lot of my cool kid friends (some bringing their actual kids) are going, but we will be outta town so will rely on hearing about the show from them.

L7 is the band’s debut album: gritty grunge-punk full of heavy riot grrrl swagger. I’m partial to a few of their later releases but there are some great ass-kicking tracks on this record. “Bite the Wax Tadpole” is crazy frenzied energy (bite the wax tadpole = Chinese translation of Coca Cola, thanks internet!), “Let’s Rock Tonight” and “Runnin’ From the Law” are a bad girl’s call to party, “Uncle Bob” is ton-of-bricks heavy and “Snake Handler” is probably my favorite track, asking all dangerously sexy “Are you a snake? Are you a man?”

Babes in Toyland “The Peel Sessions” 1992. Limited Edition 10″ EP on Strange Fruit, recorded by John Peel for the BBC, Side A on Sept. 9th 1990 and Side B on June 11, 1991 after Peel became a fan of the band’s debut album Spanking Machine. It’s raw, raging and primal and helped provide the blueprint for the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 90′s.

One track from Spanking Machine appears on The Peel Sessions, the heavy grinding dirge “Dogg,” but most others appear on Babes in Toyland’s first EP, To Mother, including “Catatonic,” “Map Pilot,” “Primus,” “Laugh My Head Off” and one of my favorites: “Ripe.” Only one track, “Pearl,” appeared on their 1992 full album Fontanelle.

L7 “Bricks Are Heavy” 1992. Slash Records. Massive poster included. Today, November 9th, is L7 drummer Demetra Plakas’ birthday (b. 1960). Bricks Are Heavy, produced by Butch Vig (and recorded in Madison, WI – hey, I was living there in ‘91 and ‘92 during its recording! – and Sound City in CA), was L7′s most successful record, charting at #160 on Billboard. The single “Pretend We’re Dead” became one of many grunge anthems.

Bricks are Heavy is, true to its name, heavy, infusing feminist grrrl power into its punk and metal influences. “Everglade” is a scathing commentaries on being women in the testosterone-infused music scene:

Glade told her ma, “Home scene’s lame”
“I gotta go in into town, blow some steam at the rock show”
Sneak through the back door and head for the pit
And then some drunk stupid bruiser started giving her shit

Rednecks on parade
“Don’t cross my line!” says Everglade
Everglade

He was whipping through the pit
Knocked her onto the stage
She said, “Have your fun
But stop being so lame”

The guy was drunk stupid
And he must have weighed a ton
Said, “Get outta here, girlie
I’m just trying to have some fun”

Domestic violence gets a fuck you in “Diet Pill.” And then of course there is the blatant flip of the middle finger to pretty much everyone: “Shitlist.”

When I get mad and I get pissed
I grab my pen and I write out a list
Of all the people that won’t be missed
You’ve made my shitlist
For all the ones who bum me out
(Shitlist)
For all the ones who fill my head with doubt
(Shitlist)
For all the squares who get me pissed
(Shitlist)
You’ve made my shitlist
Shitlist, shitlist
When I get mad and I get pissed
(Shitlist)
I grab my pen and write out a list
(Shitlist)
Of all you assholes who won’t be missed
(Shitlist)
You’ve made my shitlist

L7 “Smell the Magic” 1990. Sub Pop Records. L7′s second release, this is the 12″ 6-song EP original release; it was re-released in ‘91 on CD adding three more tracks. Why haven’t I listened to this lately??!! I was heavy into L7 in the 90′s, its riot-grrll awesomeness, but didn’t get a chance to see them live until 1999 at the Globe in Milwaukee when they toured to promote “Slap Happy.” I reviewed that show for the Shepherd Express, remarking at the snarl and venom-fueled attack of their performance, the audience responding by morphing into a sea of thrashing bodies filled with sweaty adoration.

This EP is brilliant, angry but angry in a way that makes the listener feel gloriously alive. “Shove” is majestically, anthemically amazing and rips everyone and everything in its way to shreds. (“Get out of my way or I might shove. Get out of my way or I’m gonna shove”). “Fast and Frightening” is female power at its dirtiest, nastiness, finest:

Her glance hits me like lightning
I heard that girl is fast and frightening
Dirty hair and a laugh that’s mean
Her neighbors call her an evil machine
She’s fast, she’s lean
She’s frightening
She’s fast, she’s lean
She’s frightening
Popping wheelies on her motorbike
Straight girls wish they were dykes
She’ll do anything on a dare
Mom and Daddy’s worst nightmare
Down at the creek smoking pot
She eats the roach so she don’t get caught
Throws her mini off in the halls
Got so much c*** she don’t need no balls

Run-off groove etchings: Side A – “Rock show tonight – big butts live on stage” Side B – “Smell It Sniff It Smell It” and “Swappin’ fluids across the nation”
