Jane’s Addiction “Ritual de lo Habitual” released 30 years ago today, August 21st. 1990. Definitely my most listened-to release during the fall of ‘90, played at 11 at all times at every college party that semester. The album hit #19 in the US despite the controversial cover art (a “clean” cover exists as well: white with the text to the First Amendment on the front and this still relevant text on the back “Hitler’s syphilis-ridden dreams almost came true. How could it happen? By taking control of the media. An entire country was led by a lunatic… We must protect our First Amendment, before sick dreams become law. Nobody made fun of Hitler??!”). This whole album is so damn good! The singles, of course: “Stop!” which opens the LP (#1 US Modern Rock Tracks chart), the epic-length drug-hazed “Three Days” (Dave Navarro’s guitar solo ranked in the 100 best guitar solos ever by Guitar World), the insanely addictive ass-shaking “Been Caught Stealing” (#1 US Modern Rock Tracks and its hilarious video won Best Alternative Video at the ‘91 MTV VMA’s) and the surprisingly lovely “Classic Girl” (#15 US Modern Rock Tracks). But I also love the funked-up “No One’s Leaving” and “Obvious” as well as the liltingly funhouse-weird string-heavy “Of Course.”

Jane’s Addiction “Been Caught Stealing” 1990. Today, March 29th, is Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell’s 60th birthday (b. Peretz Bernstein, 1959). “Been Caught Stealing” is one of the best ass-shaking singles of the 90′s (and brings back memories of many, many parties in college); it hit #1 on the US Modern Rock chart and its hilarious video is ranked in the top 100 of greatest videos (by VH1). The 12″ single has two versions of the track. The 12″ Remix Version, which was remixed by Perry Farrell, delays the dog barking intro on the Album Version which appears on Ritual de lo Habitual (from Wiki: according to Farrell that was his dog Annie, “I’d got her from a dog shelter and she was quite needy, so I brought her down to the studio that day rather than leave her at home… I’m singing in the booth with the headphones on and Annie gets all excited and starts going, ‘Ruff! Ruff! Ruff!’… The fact that she ended up on the track was just pure coincidence.“) It’s also got a lot of jangle guitar, which I love but is a little weird coming from alt-metal giants Jane’s Addiction. The other track on this 12″ is the demo version of “Had a Dad;” the regular version appears on Jane’s Addiction amazing 1988 album Nothing’s Shocking. The Demo Version was recorded and produced in ‘86 at Radio Tokyo. Supposedly there is a video for the track made by a French TV station that uses the demo version but I can’t find it.
