Joshua Powell “Psychotropic” 2018/2023 Romanus Records, limited edition “purple marble” variant. Psychedelic dream pop. I’ve been sitting on this LP for a bit as I knew I’d be seeing Joshua Powell play live again – it took a bit longer than anticipated but we caught his set this past weekend at Romanus Records Fest in Indianapolis. Such nice boys! (inside joke that both Joshua Powell and bass player Josh are in on – Josh/aka Bass Mountain is not on this album but is now a regular band member and absolutely is a dead-ringer for actor Jason Momoa). Joshua has taken a hard turn musically since the release of Psychotropic, in fact he told me he plans to start recording and touring under the name Skeleton Party, the name of his latest album. The show at Romanus Fest was great – more psych-metal than pop for sure. I’m honestly good with both, having seen him play shows that focused on both and a wide swath of genres in between – he’s a great musician and showman (we saw him play at Romanus Fest back in either 2017 or 2018, I can’t remember which, as well as at Mile of Music in Appleton – I think – in 2023 or 2024). My only complaint is that the lighting inside Black Circle Brewing, where about half of the sets at Romanus Fest happened (the rest were thankfully outside where it was marginally cooler and definitely brighter). The purple-blue lights made taking photos of the band’s set a bitch.

Joshua Powell’s 2018 release is a trip taken at the neighborhood pool or country lake on a warm summer day. Shimmering and bright, with a few gentle shadows that occasionally drift by from passing fluffy clouds. In one review they noted that the press release came with the claim that the record is “acid trip for the whole family.” The title Pyschotropic is absolutely an accurate description of the record’s sound. My top track is “Spirit of the Trailer Park” which has an anthemic vibe, but gently-so. Also great are “Arrowheads or Worse” which epitomizes the psych-dream vibe with a bit of jangle, the alt-pop flavor of “Bliss is a Flak Jacket” and “Ascension” which leans Americana/country with some harmonica and hints of twang in the acoustic guitar. A really excellent spin from start to finish for a lazy late summer afternoon.

This is one of the most exciting new bands we’ve seen play live in a minute – we caught them for the first time at this past weekend’s Romanus Records Fest in Indy. Space/stoner heavy psych with an impressive 7-member lineup, with THREE percussionists, two of whom share a kit. Incredible stuff. Think a mashup of Frankie and the Witch Fingers and King Gizzard Lizard Wizard, but with some dreamy synthpop + prog-nerd thrown into the mix. Super-duper nice folks too, from Louisville, Kentucky. I got a chance to chat briefly with both guitarist/main vocalist John and GONG master Dino after their set. Here’s their bio, lifted straight from their website

Formed in 2022 in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S.A. by 7 music school nerds, DOOM GONG has made a name for themselves internationally with their own home-baked genre, Denim Psych – a hodgepodge of psychedelic rock, jazz fusion, bedroom pop, lo-fi, contemporary classical music, as well as blood, sweat, and a lot of denim.

Having only released their first two LP’s in 2023 (DOOM GONG and Dream Behemoth), DOOM GONG has quickly become a mainstay of the psych scene in the U.S. and abroad, performing their enigmatic and seamless live shows alongside the likes of Amyl and the Sniffers, The Black Angels, BADBADNOTGOOD, Allah Las, King Buffalo, Bass Drum of Death, Death Valley Girls, HOLY WAVE, Gustaf, Ron Gallo…In 2024, DOOM GONG launched their international presence, completing two summer tours consisting of 24 shows across the eastern United States and Canada with immense reception. Soon after, the denim assemblage partnered with Romanus Records to produce vinyl of their debut album – all presses were sold out within an hour of its release. [ed note: I have a copy, just haven’t featured it here yet]

Side A of Megagong is heavy on the dreamy: synth-drenched and swirly, see especially “The Perilous Rise.’ Side B is distinctively heavier: one of my favorites on Megagong is not all dreamy (though it has moments): the single “Annihilator” which was released before the LP and currently the only track with any kind of link (I’m guessing until tomorrow) is mostly hard hard heavy prog synth with glimpses of Motörhead and Sabbath. As the title suggests “Spiral Dance of Imminent Doom” is another hard and heavy rocker (with proggy synths!) which is also supremely ass-shakey. Slightly less heavy and profoundly more frenetic is the excellent title track “Megagong.” Brilliant and otherworldly.

Doom Gong is currently on tour (not in the upper Midwest unfortunately, but I begged them to put Milwaukee on their circuit next time ’round) – this is one of those bands that you must see live to fully experience the intelligent insanity of their music.

Moon Goons “Lady of Many Faces” 2024. Romanus Records, limited edition tricolor variant. Heavy psychedelic + spacey prog rock from Indianapolis, their third LP. If the little gnome-like wizard drawings on the cover weren’t enough of a clue, Lady of Many Faces is a fantastical trip into what I can only describe as medieval space, a cross between Devo and Black Sabbath. With song titles like “Telesmatic Figures,” “Hidden Hermit of the Hills” and “Wizard Prison” (which is one of my favorites), the imagery is a mushroom trip with steroids and synths. Space age bleep bloops one second, epic heavy metal shredding guitar the next. Wild shit! Every song is a journey, with twist, turns, and startling creatures jumping out of the darkness when least expected. While likely categorized as stoner rock (besides the other labels I’ve already slapped on above), I can’t even imagine zoning out while listening to Lady of Many Faces: it’s way too interesting. I also won’t put the “experimental rock” label on it (though it clearly is very unique, edgy and explorative) because, well, it somehow makes sense in all of its glorious weirdness. There are melodies, harmonies and clear beats (though those beats change – a lot), giving the album an element of pop. Though I can’t imagine any of these songs will make to a Top 40 playlist, ever.

The band itself seems to view their record through a prog-rock lens that’s got 50ish years of blurry goo smeared on it, never cleaned from back in the era of the 70’s epic concept album. From an article on Nuvo, frontman Corey Standifer says of the plot of Lady of Many Faces (inspired by keyboardist Brooke Rice’s dream of a three-faced woman), “There’s the Wizard, who is unfortunately in his own prison. He’s pure, but he doesn’t know it yet. Same with the ‘Hidden Hermit of the Hills.’ He’s a total nomad of sorts, who lives by his own book. But the Lady [of Many Faces] needs him in order to fulfill this prophecy of good and spreading your true potential. The ‘Doom Tomb Giant,’ however, is wanting to take that away from them. The song ‘Phantom Erasion’ is essentially the concept of wiping away all the negative forces within your life and really trying to tackle that as best as you can. The Lady has many faces, so [that equates to] many characters and many concepts. But she represents really digging inside of your inner self and exploiting your selfless soul.”

Here’s the entire album, performed in order at their record release show in Indy in November 2024.

Frankie Sunswept & The Silver Moons “Nostalgia” 2025, limited edition “Kaleidoscopic Sunset” vinyl, Romanus Records (sort of).* Dreamy psych garage: think King Gizzard but much lighter and brighter. Like tripping at the beach on a sunny day (vs late, dark nights under starry skies with the Lizard Wizards). Frankie Sunswept has a cazillion releases under various headings: solo under that moniker, under what I think is his real name (Frank Hoier) and then as part of the band Crushed Out, who were active from 2010 until 2018. The Silver Moons is his latest project, a six piece that formed in 2024 in New York. Their what I suppose can be called debut album, Nostalgia, seems to be a mix of previously released Sunswept solo material, including the title track “Nostalgia” originally released in 2019, both “Dream Eyes” (great psych-pop!) and “Melting Summer” from 2020 (1970s tropical/Mediterranean trippy), and “Dog Days” from 2021. Others seem to be newer material, like “Tears of a Crocodile” and my top pick, “Futureless” which is has a super kicked back cool hypnotic psych vibe.

*The Romanus label does not appear anywhere on the record, cover or lyric insert. However I got the LP directly from the Romanus label so I know they manufactured and distributed it. Not sure why Frankie didn’t include it as the label for this release; his previous solo release Turning from 2021 does sport the Romanus label.

Pat & the Pissers “How It’s Done” 2025. Romanus Records, limited (to 50) edition “Nebula” variant. Indianapolis-based snotty, fun, socially aware hardcore punk with dashes of alt-funk/metal. How It’s Done is the Pissers third LP and, I believe, their second full length release on the Romanus label. Some of my top tracks have a very 80’s hardcore sound: the album opener “Overflow” recalls political bands like Reagan Youth; “Big Hit” reminds me of D.I. or Suicidal Tendencies who always leaned their punk toward metal. “Better Off Dead” is a bit of 80’s era Red Hot Chili Peppers (with more punk and less funk). Speaking of funk, “Strong Man” goes full on funk-metal and while not so much funk and way more punk, “Feel It” has a killer ass-shaking jam. They drop the funk completely with some straight up thrash metal on “Backseat Boys” (but danceable!). The last track, “Chump,” is pretty good but goes weirdly shoegazey dream pop. This is a great record overall – we could’ve seen the Pissers play Milwaukee a couple months back, I think, but skipped it because either the weather was shitty, we were too tired or were too busy. Hopefully they’ll be back soon – Indy is only about a 4.5 hour drive so kinda in their backyard.

A collection of “official bootlegs” from live performances in 2016 and 2019, sourced from KGLW.net. Jammy (but with a punk attitude) psychedelic garage rock. Hypnotic, but brutally and loudly so (that said, I did sleep through an entire Gizzard show in 2018 so the hypnotic part won out). I’m not sure what the rationale for pulling these particular live tracks for this collection was, but it’s great. I particularly like “Gamma Knife” and the “Evil Death Roll/Invisible Face” mashup from the Levitation festival in 2016 (which technically was canceled due to storms but a bunch of the bands ended up playing clubs around Austin that weekend). Of personal interest are the two tracks recorded at the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee in 2019: “Wah Wah” and “Road Train” (not the show we were at but I heard it was pretty epic).

Giovanni Rotondo “Exoplanets” 2024. Romanus Records, limited edition splatter vinyl variant. Neo-classical cosmic-inspired piano compositions. Not my usual fare (nor Romanus’) but since one of my goals is to have a copy of all Romanus releases, here I am. I did not spring the extra cash for the very limited Space Dust variant (glow sand and real meteorite dust filled vinyl) though that would have been pretty cool. Since I know nothing about Rotondo and very little about modern/neo-classical piano music, I’m going to quote wildly from Romanus’ and Rotunda’s websites.

From Romanus Records

“Exoplanets are planets orbiting stars beyond our solar system, revealing the universe’s vastness and complexity. Giovanni Rotondo’s music explores these celestial mysteries, transporting listeners to the outer edges of the cosmos…This album came to us via our MFG side of our business. However, the concept and the music was so unique and cool we asked, “why don’t you just let us release it?” Through covid delays & label releases we waited but we couldn’t be happier to share this dreamy space piano concept with you…Giovanni Rotondo is a London-based Italian composer known for his emotional and technically skilled music. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Giovanni’s work spans feature films, TV series, and documentaries, earning him praise and a loyal following. His compositions, such as a symphony blending Neapolitan folk music with orchestral arrangements, have been performed by the Teatro San Carlo Orchestra. He also has done a bunch in the Video game music community which we thoroughly enjoy.”

From Rotondo

I decided to create a space-themed piano solo album. My main goal was to search deep within myself and find a style that wasn’t dictated by what was popular or in demand. I was determined to let my instinct guide the writing 100%. So, I sat at my piano and started playing. After a few minutes, the music started to flow effortlessly from my fingers, and to my ears, it sounded new and exciting. I could describe Exoplanets as a post-modern piano solo album, or call it neo-classical, minimalistic, or new-objectivistic. But to me, Exoplanets is simply the musical reflection of my soul. Each of the 12 pieces was inspired by a unique exoplanet—planets that orbit suns other than our own. Once the writing was complete, I knew I had something special. But it wasn’t until the incredible Romanus Records picked it up for release that I truly felt I had done something right.

I’m not sure I can choose a top pick (and there is nothing rocking nor ass-shaking on the entire LP) but it’s quite lovely, dreamy and super-relaxing and so I can link at least one or two songs, I’ll choose my favorite track names: Track 1 on Sector A (side A) “Proxima B – The Nigh” and Track 7 on Sector B (side B) “PSRR B1257+2 B Poltergeist” (the latter does have a bit of pep to it!).

Lung “Let It Be Gone” 2022. Romanus Records, limited edition tricolor variant. One of my favorite low-end two-piece art-garage-rockers out there. We had the pleasure of catching Lung last weekend up in Green Bay at the GBUFO Invasion Fest – I think this is the at least the fourth or fifth time we’ve seen them live. Let It Be Gone is the fourth full-length from the ultra-original Cincinnati band that consists of Kate Wakefield on electric cello/vocals and Daisy Caplan on drums. They are spectacular to watch: dynamic and dramatic doesn’t even begin to describe their performances. <img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-15902 chairs/on stools, they and their bodies go all in. Kate is a trained opera singer and clearly has theatre stage experience – her expressions can be seen at the back of the room, in poor lighting. And that voice!! I think she held a high C for, like, a full minute at the show. Daisy is a monster at the set, providing both rhythm and melody with a drive that never stops. Let It Be Gone captures most of that energy. The opener, “Jump Ship,” is one of my favorites and they’ve played it at the past few shows, including last weekend – it’s incredibly memorable. “The Prettiest Machine” is a staccato’d stomper and super-angry and “Siren Song” is weirdly and wildly anthemic with full-stop tempo changes and soaring vocals that are just beyond – I love it (I’m pretty sure this is the song that she held that high C on). And while not one of my favorites (it’s still pretty damn good), the video for “Rag Doll” is pretty great and gives a glimpse into the band’s aesthetic and, possibly, psyche. As great as this record is, trust the saying “Ya gotta see Lung live” – your mind will be blown.

Volk “Towards the Setting Sun” 2023. Romanus Records, limited edition “Marble Morning Dew” variant. Volk’s first live album, recorded at shows throughout 2022 while on tour with the Supersuckers. We caught Volk in Janesville on Sunday afternoon at the Looking Glass bar and grille; they are about to start another leg of their current tour with Electric Six and the Supersuckers (they play Madison tomorrow) and it was so great to see and catch up with them. We arrived about 15 minutes late, and probably missed them play one of my favorite songs, “I Fed Animals” which appears on Towards the Setting Sun, recorded at The Saint in Asbury Park, NJ. But we did arrive near the start of another favorite, “Honey Bee” (on this LP recorded at the Rickshaw Theatre, Vancouver BC) and they were already tearing the packed bar down with their brand of raucous cow punk.

Other show highlights included one of their newer songs, “Pop Song,” and the epically thundering “Welcome to Cashville” (Eleot’s drum prowess is always beyond!) from their 2021 debut Cashville. Both tracks are on Towards the Setting Sun: “Pop Song” recorded at Three Links Deep Ellum in Dallas (Chris threatens to go Dee Synder on the crowd’s “mother-fucking asses,” I’m not sure why!) and “Cashville” at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach.

But far and away the afternoon’s highlight was their performance of the Ray Wylie Hubbard cover “Snake Farm.” It was so nice, they played it twice! Once midway through the main set and then again as part of the encore. The crowd was equally as enthusiastic both times, with a crowd sing along and dancing (well, really one dude doing a skank/pogo hybrid thing, the rest of us doing the stand-in-one-place head-nod/ass-shake). I think this is also when Chris did a guitar solo, strolling down the bar. On Towards the Setting Sun that track was recorded at the Swan Dive in Austin, Texas. (I bet they didn’t get to hear it twice)

I didn’t record any video on Sunday, but here’s a relatively recent performance of “Snake Farm” from a show at Mortimers in Minneapolis (2023); it’s been fun to see how this song has evolved at their shows over the past few years – each time it’s different, sometimes more punk and sometimes a bit psychedelic (like in this video):

Calva Louise “Over the Threshold” 2023. Romanus Records, limited edition splatter variant. UK-based prog/alt-metal. Just received this past weekend in the mail – emo-electro-metal is not my usual fare but it’s a beauty of a record from Romanus (and Romanus-owner Chris Banta kindly threw in a second copy for Vault-boy which was super-sweet!). The acquisition also continues my quest to acquire all-things Romanus. I know absolutely zero about the band (and not much more about the genre) so I’m depending a lot on others’ reviews and info. From their Bandcamp, “As a sequel of the previous works from the British band with multicultural origins, this mixtape marks a new musical direction for the band members: Jess, Alizon, and Ben. This last work of Calva Louise serves as the first part of a new trilogy and each song represents a step in the journey of taking control of our thoughts to transcend the limitations of the physical and dream worlds.” I have also learned that they formed in 2016 and this is their 3rd LP (hence the trilogy thing) but since I have not listened to those other releases, I can’t say if their Allmusic bio is accurate or not (“grunge/punk trio who play loud and brash music without foregoing catchy hooks” — it’s not grungy nor punk. There are some catchy hooks). “Third Class Citizen,” both the album opener and, as a remix (“Bobby Wolfgang Remix“), is pretty catchy, though I prefer the verse to the chorus — the chorus goes all-in with the metalcore screamy style which is not my jam. The title track “Over the Threshold” definitely belongs in a video game (really, the whole record does) and the video reinforces this, a lot. I suspect this is one of the reasons Banta sent our kid a copy 😉
