Various Artists “Dance Craze” 1981. 2 Tone Records. Soundtrack from the movie Dance Craze, “the best of British ska…live!” and that hype isn’t wrong. The movie, shot in ’80, is a movie about the 2 Tone movement; according to wiki director Joe Massot originally intended the movie to be just about Madness but it evolved into a tour documentary of the bands in the UK. Songs on the LP include a selection of track from the film: Madness of course (though apparently on later album pressings their songs were removed, my guess for copyright issues or similar), plus The Specials, English Beat, The Selecter, Bad Manners and one lone track from The Bodysnatchers. I don’t think I’ve seen the movie (which is a situation that needs to be rectified soon) but this record is great! I adore Madness so their tracks “Razor Blade Alley,” “Night Boat to Cairo” and the forever fave “One Step Beyond” are for sure tops. English Beat is another band that has been a favorite of mine for 40 plus years (and we’ve seen them multiple times live) so I extra appreciate “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “Big Shot” and “Ranking Full Stop” which are their featured tracks. The Specials are epic and they have “Concrete Jungle,” “Man at C&A” and “Nite Klub” on the soundtrack. I’m less familiar with The Selector’s catalog – we do have one of their records – but I really like their “Too Much Pressure.” Same with Bad Manners though I know we have or had one of their albums (and their track “Inner London Violence” on here is pretty great), and am also woefully under-informed about The Bodysnatchers who appear here with “Easy Life.”

You can see the movie in its entirety here

The Selecter “Celebrate the Bullet” 1981. 2022 reissue on clear vinyl. This second LP by UK ska group (and a former 2 Tone label band) is my friend Micah’s, lent to us after an evening of Negronis, chili and chats about music. I wasn’t familiar with the Selecter so that is now being remedied. The band was pretty short-lived, forming in 1979, gaining rapid success with several UK hit singles, and putting out their debut album Too Much Pressure in 1980. But they broke up in 1981 not that long after the release of Celebrate the Bullet: there were tensions between band members’ desires to go in different directions (more new wave vs traditional ska) but the real nail in the coffin was the album and title track name, “Celebrate the Bullet,” the release of both happened to coincide with the murder of John Lennon (BBC banned the station from spinning the single) and the attempted assassination of Reagan. The single and the LP both bombed and the band called it quits. (Though like a zillion other 80’s bands, they did reform with different and rotating lineups a bunch of times in the 90’s and 2000’s.) The overall themes of the tracks are bleak and commentaries on the political and social situations of the early 80’s, though my top picks are musically ska-bouncy and danceable: “(Who Likes) Facing Situations” and the aforementioned title track “Celebrate the Bullet.” I find some of the tracks to be a bit head-scratchy like “Selling Out Your Future” which is ok but devolves into some wandering guitar noodles, the high-pitched 80’s-meets-60’s synth of “Cool Blue Lady” is so very not ska and “Their Dream Goes On” is a Bowie-esque head trip. It’s certainly interesting but seems to lack a cohesive vision (see why the band broke up above).

State of Emergency “Ska-Terbrain” 1990. Debussy Records. 6 song EP from the short-lived ska (obviously) band from the Chicago area; State of Emergency dissolved/evolved into Skapone. I’m not familiar with either band; this LP was in a gift-crate of LP’s from a couple of years ago that I’ve finally worked my through. It’s bright, peppy ska with a new wave/pop sheen. Very little horn – in fact unlike most ska bands that have a zillion members, SoE just had four members, playing guitar, keyboards, drums, bass (and shakers!). John and Marie Calahan share lead vocals (no idea if they are/were a couple or siblings though my money is a couple) – both have soft, whisper-edged voices, John’s a bit reedy. It’s a bit refreshing to hear female vocals on a ska record as I honestly can’t think of many/any others. That said, while typically ska-upbeat, the EP is pretty boring. I like “Far Away” pretty OK – it features Marie mostly. The final track “Pinky” is…weird. It starts off as down-beat, mellow with some ridiculous snorting effects and then briefly devolves into a punk rager complete with screams and shouts, before slowing back down. Total head-scratcher. I won’t be hanging on to this one.

The Specials “More Specials” 1980. 2 Tone Records. Today’s ska spin is in honor of singer Terry Hall, who died Sunday at age 63. More Specials is the band’s second LP; it hit #5 in the UK and edged onto the US chart at #98. Of note: More Specials features Hall’s first co-composition (with keyboardist/primary songwriter Jerry Dammers), “Man at C&A.” The record also has contributions by members of the Go-Go’s on background vocals. Hall and Go-Go Jane Wiedlin had affair around the time of this album’s recording, which resulted in the Go-Go’s hit “Our Lips Are Sealed,” co-written by Wiedlin and Hall, a fact – and song – that delights me to no end. (Hall’s band Fun Boy Three, formed in 1981 after Hall left The Specials, recorded their own version of “Our Lips Are Sealed” in 1983; it went to #7 in the UK.)

More Specials is a lot ska, but it also has other elements like lounge (not a fan: the song “Pearl’s Cafe” is not good), rockabilly and soul (am a fan: the track “Sock It to ’em J.B.” kicks). There’s even a touch of spaghetti western on the single “Stereotype” which hit #6 in the UK. The Specials released three other singles: the upbeat “Enjoy Yourself” (first recorded in 1949 by Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians), “Rat Race” (on the US release, not the UK version) which went to #5 in the UK and to #89 on the US Dance chart, and “Do Nothing” (#4 UK).

General Public “All the Rage” 1984, the ska/funk-infused new wave supergroup’s debut, formed after the breakup of The (English) Beat by Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger. Filed under things I didn’t know but really should have: Mick Jones from The Clash was in the original lineup but left the band during the recording of All the Rage (replaced by guitarist Kevin White). Dexys Midnight Runner’s Mickey Billingham (keyboards) and the Specials’ Horace Parker (bass) were also part of General Public.

All the Rage, the band’s first LP, went to #26 in the US, propelled by their hit single “Tenderness” (#27 US, #95 UK); I loved this song back in ’84. It appeared in two iconic 80’s films: Sixteen Candles and Weird Science, giving it broad exposure though I do remember it getting heavy rotation on MTV. Mick Jones plays guitar on that track. General Public released three other singles from All the Rage: “General Public,” “Never You Done That” and “Hot You’re Cool.”

We saw Dave Wakeling play live most recently this past April at Turner Hall in Milwaukee as part of The (English) Beat (totally revamped of course, I’m pretty Wakeling was the only original member of the band playing). Besides Beat songs, they performed two songs from All The Rage, “Tenderness,” of course, and “Never You Done That.”

“Scandal Ska” 1989. Mango Records. Compilation by various artists’ ska recordings from 1960-1962. While it’s not the soundtrack to the 1989 film Scandal (starring Joanne Whalley and John Hurt, the movie is “a fictionalized account of the Profumo affair” that brought “down the U.K. government when it was revealed that high-class hooker Christine Keeler was simultaneously servicing both the British Minister of War and a Soviet naval attaché”), a couple of the songs on Scandal Ska are featured in the movie to highlight the contemporary popular music of post-independent Jamaica in England. A couple of the numbers directly address the political scandal including the title track/opener “Scandal” by Skatalites founder/tromboonist Don Drummond, “Christine Keeler” by saxophonist Roland Alphonso, the bluesy-ska “Mr. Kruschev” by Skitter (Noel Simms, considered as one of Jamaica’s most gifted percussionists) and “Russian Roulette” by King Edwards. Also of note on Scandal Ska are Bob Marley’s (going by Robert Marley) first recorded single “Judge Not,” Jimmy Cliff’s “Miss Jamaica” and Desmond Dekker’s (the first “superstar” of reggae) debut single “Honor Your Mother & Father.” It’s an interesting comp overall but not necessarily a record I need to have in our collection (it came to us as a part of a larger vinyl acquisition) so I’m totally willing to let this one go.

Operation Ivy “Hectic” 1988. Lookout! Records. 6-song debut EP from ska-punks Operation Ivy which is, according to Trouser Press, credited as the first ska-core record (not sure that I have the energy to verify that). Operation Ivy included all six tracks on their 1991 release Operation Ivy. The 7″ EP comes with a very badly stapled 8-page booklet that includes lyrics, band info, comments about the songs and blurry photocopied show flyers.

Hectic is a quick listen, lasting around 10 minutes total. It’s extra-fast ska-jumpy, definitely rough around the edges with NO horns, just the standard rock guitar/bass/drums/vocal lineup. For me most ska records tend to sound all alike after a song a two so the infusion of some hardcore punk is refreshing. Punk takes center stage on the first track, “Junkie’s Runnin’ Dry” as well as on “Hoboken.” My favorite ska-forward song is “Healthy Body,” which has a lot of tempo changes and seems very Clash-inspired, down to singer Jesse Michaels’ vocal intonations. I also really like the guitar riff on “Yellin’ In My Ear.”

Our copy is not a first-run, which is probably for the best. According the Discogs listing of Hectic, the first pressing listed numbers on the back cover but “The numbers are not necessary consecutive. The number of copies in the first pressing is unknown. David Hayes [Lookout! Records co-owner] stamped multiple copies of this album as “0001” just to trick collectors.”

Graham McPherson, 1961). 7 is Madness’ third album; it went to #5 on the UK album chart. I believe our copy is a UK original as it has all of the intended tracks: the song “Day on the Town” was removed from some markets, replaced by “Never Ask Twice,” the b-side to the single “Shut Up.” Other markets added “It Must Be Love” (originally by Labi Siffre, 1971) which was a UK stand-alone single (#4 UK in 1981, #33 US in 1983) or “In the City” which was the b-side to “Cardiac Arrest.” We do have “Day on the Town” and none of those other songs on our copy of 7. Like all Madness records, it’s a rollicking ska-bopping good time and I’ve enjoyed their Monty Pythonesque videos since the early 80’s. My favorite tracks include the singles “Cardiac Arrest” (#14 UK), “Grey Day” (#4 UK) and “Shut Up” (#7 UK) as well as the non-single “Mrs. Hutchinson.”

“Life in the European Theater” 1982. Compilation album of mostly British new wave/punk/ska bands, sale royalties went to benefit anti-nuke organizations. It’s a good – and weird – comp, with a couple of head-scratching, “one of these things is not like the others” moments. The best, and obvious, inclusions are the punk/power pop tracks (“London Calling” by The Clash and “Nuclear Device” by The Stranglers), followed closely by ska boppers “I Am Your Flag” (The Beat), “Grey Day” (Madness) and, surprisingly for me as I’m not a big fan, “Living Through Another Cuba” by XTC which is a rollicking great song. I adore Echo & The Bunnymen so appreciate their selection “All That Jazz” and the same goes for the The Jam with “Little Boy Soldiers.” I don’t fully understand Peter Gabriel’s appearance with “I Don’t Remember” — I like Peter Gabriel but his experimental pop rock song is just…odd in the context of the rest of the record. But that oddity is nothing compared to The Doors “Peace Frog.” I actually LOVE that classic ass-shaker – it’s my all-time favorite of theirs – but The Doors are most definitely NOT European, they recorded “Peace Frog” in 1970 (10 years or so before most of the other tracks on the comp) and it has nothing to do with any kind of anti-nuclear, energy or war, stance (it has more to do with Jim Morrison’s onstage arrest in ’67 and American highway accidents). Life in the European Theater was released on a different label (WEA) in ’81 that had Ian Dury and the Blockheads’ “Reasons to Be Cheerful Pt. 3” instead of “Peace Frog.” Which makes a lot more sense for this comp.

The liner notes explain the impetus for this comp: in the early 80’s fear of nuclear power was at an all-time high with the Three Mile Island meltdown (1979) still fresh in people’s minds. My family lived about 25 miles from a nuclear power plant that was (still is) on the shore of Lake Michigan and I remember my parents fretting big time about our safety in the early 80’s.

“Nuclear Power: No single civil industry threatens our lives, and the lives of future generations, with such brutal finality as Nuclear Power.
It will have a deep and damaging effect on all of us. An enourmous, appalling expensive risk. Despite the soothing words of the nuclear industry, accidents will happen.
Everyday, the radioactive rubbish dump of lethal nuclear waste grows bigger – in spite of the fact that no one yet knows how to dispose of it with safety and certainty.
It is a deadly inheritance to leave our children and their children. Of course, everyone needs energy – now, and in the future. But heat from atom spliting will fail to provide the kind of secure source of energy and we all need because it is complex, over-centralised, and unreliable, and also creates the materials for any country to assemble an atomic bomb.
Meanwhile, it is diverting vast sums of money and scientific resources away from the only true long-term solutions to our energy needs; an energy conservation programme, coupled with the harnessing of the only abundant source of energy the world will always have – the sun.
Will it dawn on us?”
-Roger Deakin, Friends of the Earth.

Bad Manners “Return of the Ugly” 1989. Blue Beat Records. The UK-ska band’s sixth studio LP. This album has been languishing in a stack of records I received from a friend well over a year ago so it’s my first listen, and my first time listening to any Bad Manners; ska is fine but not really my thing. So with that background I can’t really say if the record is considered good ska or mediocre ska but I’m thinking it’s certainly stereotypical ska, down to the number of band members (there are 12 listed in the album credits. Side note: one of our favorite Milwaukee-area concert venues describes their stage for bands contemplating booking thusly: “It’s a pretty good size. Like, ska-friendly. We’ll measure it soon” which always makes me laugh). Songs that are alright on Return of the Ugly include the lead track “Skaville UK” and “Sally Brown” which is a cover, originally by “The Godfather of Ska” Laurel Aitken. (Bad Manners’ other Aitken cover on Return of the Ugly, “Hey Little Girl,” is not quite as good.) Songs that are not alright are the attempts at a cowboy western theme/ska mashup like “Bonanza Ska” which is just silly and not in a good way – it’s a super-silly ska’d up version of “Bonanza” originally by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston for the TV show – and “Buffalo Ska” which is a really weird combo of ska, sad trumpet and harmonica with a Ramones-esque delivery. So while this record wasn’t in the “should it stay or should it go” pile, I’m pretty sure it’s a “go” – I’d rather get a couple of Laurel Aitken LP’s.
