The Moonstones “Cuando Cae La Noche” 2014. Soundflat Records. 60’s styled garage rock from Madrid, Spain. I can’t understand a word but hot damn this record rocks! Joe picked this up for me last month in Madrid and it’s exactly what I love in the garage genre. It has all the best of garage revival: punchy and danceable rhythms, gritty lo-fi(ish) recording, Farfisa organ and harmonica, fuzzy guitar; Cuando Cae La Noche seems to be their third, and final, LP release. From their Bandcamp page: “Influenced by bands like The Miracle Workers, The Chesterfield Kings, The Cynics, Lyres, The Sonics, and by sounds pervaded with Garage, R&B and all 60’s scene.” They cover a Chesterfield Kings song (it’s one of my top picks): “No mientas más” (“She Told Me Lies“). The rest of the album appears to be all originals. Other favorites include the title track “Cuando cae la noche” and “Necesitas más,” both high energy and ass-shaking. They do occassionally slow down, like on the album closer “Veneno de escorpión,” bringing the sound to a more garage-psych vibe. It’s all awesome. There’s not much live or video content available by The Moonstones (especially for this record) but here’s one from their 2001 album Fuzz, Farfisa y Fiesta.
