“Colors” Soundtrack 1988. Soundtrack of rap/hip hop from the 1988 film starring Sean Penn and Robert Duvall, directed by Dennis Hopper. I’m pretty sure I saw Colors in the 80’s, most likely on VHS; while I don’t remember much about the film, I for sure remember the title track by Ice-T. His single “Colors” was the first time Ice-T charted (it went to #70 in the US): it’s simple, powerful and a total ear worm. Another top track is “Paid in Full (Coldcut Remix)” by Eric B. & Rakim – the track charted well in Europe but not that well in the US. Despite its poor showing it’s retrospectively considered one of the greatest hip hop song of all time. One of my favorites from the era, Salt-n-Pepa have “Let the Rhythm Run” on the soundtrack; they and Roxanne Shante’s “Go On Girl” bring the girl power to the record. Also of note is “Raw” by Big Daddy Kane who is regarded the best MCs, “Mad Mad World” by The 7A3 whose member DJ Muggs would go on to Cypress Hill, and “Everywhere I Go (Colors)” by the infamous Rick James.

Isaac Hayes “Shaft” soundtrack, released 50 years ago this month. Stax Records. Today, August 20th, also would have been Isaac Hayes’ 79th birthday (b. 1942, d. 2008). The Shaft soundtrack went to # 1, as did the the single “Theme from Shaft.” The soundtrack spent an astounding 60 weeks on the Billboard album chart, is part of the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry and won a bunch of accolades including Grammys for the Best Engineered Recording, Non-Classical and Best Instrumental Arrangement and the film score as a whole won for Best Instrumental Composition Written Specifically For A Motion Picture or for Television. Hayes also won an Oscar for the theme single and was nominated for best Original Dramatic Score. Hayes had originally wanted to star in the film as John Shaft (Richard Roundtree had already been cast) so got a cameo in the movie instead. The soundtrack, written entirely by Hayes specifically for the film, is mostly instrumentals for specific scenes (i.e. “Shaft’s Cab Ride” and “Cafe Regio’s”) except for the title track, the excellent “Do You Thing” which charted in the top 40, and “Soulsville.”

“Woodstock: Music from the Original Soundtrack and More” released on this date, May 11th, 1970, infamously performed and recorded between August 15-18, 1969. Woodstock is one of my kinda-guilty pleasures, a holdover from my brief hippie phase during college in the late 80′s/early 90′s; I’m pretty sure my roommate or one of her boyfriends had this LP (this copy is a relatively new acquisition the Vault and I don’t think my parents had it, mainly because my dad HATES Jimi Hendrix and his version of “The Star Spangled Banner” in particular). There’s some stuff on here that I really don’t like like “At the Hop” by Sha-Na-Na, Joan Baez and Jeffrey Shurtleff singing “Drug Store Truck Drivin’ Man” and the never-ending “Love March” by Butterfield Blues Band. (I used to really loathe Joe Cocker’s cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends” until the early days of You Tube when this misheard lyrics video of the Woodstock performance came out and I laughed so hard I had tears rolling.) But there are some amazing performances as well, like Richie Havens’ impassioned “Freedom (Motherless Child),” the raw, red-eyed “Coming Into Los Angeles” by Arlo Guthrie, Jefferson Airplane’s “Volunteers” and most especially “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” by Crosby, Stills & Nash. It was the one of first times they performed the track (Woodstock was the second time they ever played in front of people and they were “scared shitless”), they fuck it up a bit but it’s still my favorite rendition of the track.
