Deep Sea Diver “Billboard Heart” 2025. Sub Pop Records on “glacial blue” vinyl. Dreamy indie pop, Billboard Heart is the Seattle-based band’s fourth LP. Deep Sea Diver charted in the UK at #77 and its title track/lead single “Billboard Heart” went to #40 on the US Adult Alternative chart. The tracks “Shovel” and “Let Me Go” were also released as singles. Fronted by singer Jessica Dobson (solo plus performed with The Shins, Beck, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs among other indie/alt royalty), it’s on the upbeat not-too-ambient end of dream pop, with a few garage-leaning rockers like one of my top picks “Emergency” and the grunge-bridged loud-quiet-loud “Always Waving Goodbye.” Most of it, however, is synth-forward, accented by sometimes aggressive guitars while Dobson’s clear yet punk-inflected vocals soar above. It’s a nice listen but a bit too ambient for my tastes, at least today. Might be more of a summer evening listen.

Mudhoney “You Got It (Keep It Outta My Face)” b/w “Burn It Clean” 1989. Sub Pop Records. Mudhoney, Sub Pop’s first true success, was the band that helped pave the way for other Seattle bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc. to find commercial success with the rise of the 90′s indie rock/grunge scene. Allmusic writes “[Mudhoney] took the sweat-soaked and beer-fueled mixture of heavy metal muscle, punk attitude, and garage rock primitivism that would become known as “grunge” to the hipster audience for the first time.”

“You Got It,” which appears on Mudhoney’s debut self-titled LP, has always been one of my favorite singles from the grungey late 80′s/early 90′s, all flippantly punk while still being infectiously danceable. The flipside, “Burn It Clean” is on the EP/singles album Superfuzz Bigmuff.

Runoff groove etchings:

Side A – “Mouthful of dirt”

Side B – “Handful of charms”

Nirvana “Bleach” released on this date, June 15th, 1989. SubPop/Waterfront Records. Red vinyl, debut studio release. Bleach failed to chart upon its initial release but after Nirvana’s massive success with Nevermind, Geffen Records re-released Bleach in ‘92 and it went to #89 in the US and #33 in the UK.

Bleach has become a grunge/hard rock classic, with songs like “About a Girl” and “Negative Creep” now part of the pop culture lexicon. My favorite song on the album is one not written by Kurt Cobain, but rather is a cover of Robbie Van Leeuwen’s “Love Buzz” (originally released in 1969 by Shocking Blue). Nirvana injects “Love Buzz” with a dirty needle of grinding, menacing speed.

SubPop Singles Club “Smells Like Smoked Sausages” 1992, double 7″ on pink vinyl: Tar “Deep Throw,” Cows “My Girl,” Helmet “Oven,” Surgery “Our Demise,” Boss Hog “Fire of Love,” God Bullies “Bullet,” Vertigo “Dynamite Cigar” and Helios Creed “Hideous Greed.” All the bands were “on loan” from Amphetamine Reptile Records.

Noisy, garagey early 90′s post-punk and hopelessly mislabelled, on the back cover and on the record label too. You really need to know the songs/bands or cross-reference to figure out what track is actually being played. Three of my favorites: the Cows “My Girl” is a heavy cover of the traditional folk lament “In the Pines” aka “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” (first made commercially popular by Bill Monroe, then Lead Belly and even more so by Nirvana with their performance in ‘94 on MTV Unplugged). As I love all things Jon Spencer, I especially enjoy Boss Hog’s “Fire of Love,” a cover of Jody Reynolds’ 1958 spooky rockabilly single that peaked at #66 (and was also later covered by MC5 and the Gun Club). Pulling away from the dirge-beat of those two tracks is Surgery’s almost danceable, hip-shaking mosh-pit ready song (with standard 90′s grunge guitar solos) “Our Demise.”

But he still rocks almost as hard as he did in the late 90′s, when he sported the more college computer nerd look, which you can see in a different live performance of “Dancing Shoes.”

Tad “God’s Balls” 1989. Sub Pop Records. Blue vinyl. Tad’s debut album – heavy heavy grungey Seattle hard rock that Allmusic’s Greg Pato describes as “punk rock slowed down to a powerful Sabbath-like pace.” Tad opened for Nirvana on their “Bleach” tour but never achieved crossover status into mainstream rock the way that Nirvana did. Perhaps song titles like “Cyanide Bath,” “Satan’s Chainsaw” and “Nipple Belt” scared off the masses. Whatever. Their loss. This album is an assault of over-the-top, in-your-face anger and swagger wrapped up in 300 pound flannel.

Runoff groove etchings: Side A (the “Judas” side) – “Judass kicks ass” and Side B (the “Jesus” side) – “Free Dick Johnson” The back cover of the album states “This record is lovingly dedicated to convicted felon Dick Johnson”

L7 “Smell the Magic” 1990. Sub Pop Records. L7′s second release, this is the 12″ 6-song EP original release; it was re-released in ‘91 on CD adding three more tracks. Why haven’t I listened to this lately??!! I was heavy into L7 in the 90′s, its riot-grrll awesomeness, but didn’t get a chance to see them live until 1999 at the Globe in Milwaukee when they toured to promote “Slap Happy.” I reviewed that show for the Shepherd Express, remarking at the snarl and venom-fueled attack of their performance, the audience responding by morphing into a sea of thrashing bodies filled with sweaty adoration.

This EP is brilliant, angry but angry in a way that makes the listener feel gloriously alive. “Shove” is majestically, anthemically amazing and rips everyone and everything in its way to shreds. (“Get out of my way or I might shove. Get out of my way or I’m gonna shove”). “Fast and Frightening” is female power at its dirtiest, nastiness, finest:

Her glance hits me like lightning
I heard that girl is fast and frightening
Dirty hair and a laugh that’s mean
Her neighbors call her an evil machine
She’s fast, she’s lean
She’s frightening
She’s fast, she’s lean
She’s frightening
Popping wheelies on her motorbike
Straight girls wish they were dykes
She’ll do anything on a dare
