John Lennon “Live In New York City” 1986, recorded in August 1972, his last full-length concert performance. Today, December 8th, marks the 40th anniversary of Lennon’s death, murdered in New York City in 1980. Yoko Ono put together the concert LP; she performed alongside Lennon at the concert (a benefit for the Willowbrook State School); they were backed by the Elephant Memory band. The performance includes some of Lennon’s greatest hits, including “Instant Karma (We All Shine On),” “Mother,” “Imagine” and “Give Peace a Chance.” He even throws in a Beatles tune – “Come Together” – and an old blues/rockabilly track “Hound Dog” made famous by Elvis but originally (and much better) performed by Big Mama Thornton. One of the best tracks on the album is the hard-rocking “Well, Well, Well” which was from his 1970 John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band LP. Live in New York City went to #41 in the US and #55 in the UK.

The Beatles “Help!” released 55 years ago today, August 6th, 1965 (the UK version – this LP is the US soundtrack version which came out on August 13th; the film was released on August 25th). We do have the UK version but it’s currently quarantined at my kid’s high school’s radio station and I have no idea when we’ll see it again. Anyway, I love Help! and am more familiar with the UK version but the US soundtrack version has some pretty cool instrumentals from the movie (including a sitar-upped variation of “A Hard Day’s Night”). Help! is also my most-listened to Beatles album for a couple of songs in particular: “The Night Before,” “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” and “I’ve Just Seen a Face.” Those songs remind me of college: hanging out at a friend’s house, mellow-partying, he’d play those songs on guitar (competently!). “Yesterday” of course is amazing, as are the tracks The Beatles released as single: “Ticket To Ride” (#1 UK, #1 US) and the title track “Help!” (#1 UK, #1 US). The album also went to #1 in both the UK and the US as well as about a zillion other countries (not really, but it did go to the top everywhere that has charts). I’ve seen the movie – it is delightfully silly, mixing Monty Pythonish (pre Monty Python of course) humor with eastern religion imagery. Madcap adventures ensue.

The Beatles “The Beatles” (better known, of course, as the White Album) released 50 years ago today, November 22nd, in 1968. Our copy is from my excellent Aunt Jeanie who probably bought in ‘68: it’s got a lot of wear and tear and love. It’s also Thanksgiving today and we have a lot to do so since this is one of the most famous and iconic rock albums ever made, will just quote Allmusic here:

“Each song on the sprawling double album The Beatles is an entity to itself, as the band touches on anything and everything it can. This makes for a frustratingly scattershot record or a singularly gripping musical experience, depending on your view, but what makes the so-called White Album interesting is its mess. Never before had a rock record been so self-reflective, or so ironic; the Beach Boys send-up “Back in the U.S.S.R.” and the British blooze parody “Yer Blues” are delivered straight-faced, so it’s never clear if these are affectionate tributes or wicked satires. Lennon turns in two of his best ballads with “Dear Prudence” and “Julia”; scours the Abbey Road vaults for the musique concrète collage “Revolution 9”; pours on the schmaltz for Ringo’s closing number, “Good Night”; celebrates the Beatles cult with “Glass Onion”; and, with “Cry Baby Cry,” rivals Syd Barrett. McCartney doesn’t reach quite as far, yet his songs are stunning – the music hall romp “Honey Pie,” the mock country of “Rocky Raccoon,” the ska-inflected “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da,” and the proto-metal roar of “Helter Skelter.” Clearly, the Beatles’ two main songwriting forces were no longer on the same page, but neither were George and Ringo. Harrison still had just two songs per LP, but it’s clear from “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” the canned soul of “Savoy Truffle,” the haunting “Long, Long, Long,” and even the silly “Piggies” that he had developed into a songwriter who deserved wider exposure. And Ringo turns in a delight with his first original, the lumbering country-carnival stomp “Don’t Pass Me By.” None of it sounds like it was meant to share album space together, but somehow The Beatles creates its own style and sound through its mess.”

Beatles “Magical Mystery Tour” released 50 years ago on this date, November 27th 1967, US LP version (the UK release was a double EP). This album another gem from my Aunt Jeanie’s collection and includes the 24-page booklet of photo stills and a comic strip synopsis of the plot from the Magical Mystery Tour movie. Capitol Records eventually stopped including the booklet in its subsequent pressings of the album. The unscripted, made-for-TV movie originally aired on BBC1 in December 1967 (and was a public and critical disaster) and in US theaters in 1974. I think I saw the film sometime back in the 80′s – maybe it was running on our local PBS station – and I remember thinking it really didn’t make any sense.

The album hit #1 in the US and was nominated for a Grammy in 1968. Side A of Magical Mystery Tour contains songs from the movie, including the title track and the crazy, surrealistic and amazing “I Am the Walrus.” The B-side is a collection of Beatles’ singles from 1967, each one a perfectly crafted pop song, richly layered, experimental and melodic: “Hello, Goodbye,” “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “Penny Lane,” “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” and “All You Need Is Love.”

The Beatles “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” released on this date 50 years ago, June 1st, 1967 (Wiki says US release date is June 2nd but Allmusic places it on June 1st). This copy was my Aunt Jeanie’s so likely an original purchased in ‘67 (or close), gatefold. My parents still have their original, just as worn as this one, which I listened to practically right out of the womb. It had a skip about midway through “A Little Help From My Friends” and until I had my own (on CD and probably one of the first CD’s I ever purchased), I would sing the skip and got super-confused when I would hear the song without it. As a little girl, my favorite song was “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” picturing the song as a kind of carnival ride, me as Lucy traveling down a CandyLand-like landscape, the water in the river actually chocolate a la Willy Wonka.

In early June 1987 there was a big deal about it being the 20th anniversary of Sgt. Peppers release. Just shy of 16 at that time, I was all punk and snarly but still enamored with the record, more fascinated now with its psychedelic imagery and insinuations (i.e. “Lucy,” “Within You Without You,” “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!”). Someone in the media declared ‘87 as the new “Summer of Love” – it really wasn’t – but I ran with that, got a little hippie in my punkdom and committed my one and only act ever of graffiti on the bathroom stall of Tom’s, a local fast food chain in Appleton, WI, writing “Summer of Love” with a peace symbol and some Beatles’ lyrics. (My friends and I, not surprisingly, were repeatedly banned from the downtown Tom’s over the years. It’s now a bar called Basil’s and the bathrooms are relocated so no evidence remains.)

The importance of Sgt. Peppers is monumental – it has been described as one of the first art rock LPs, jumpstarted the development of progressive rock and marks the beginning of the Album Era. It spent 27 weeks at #1 in the UK and 15 weeks in the US. It won four Grammys and in 2003 the Library of Congress included it in the National Recording Registry. It’s still one of the best-selling records of all-time.
