The Demon’s Claws “Little Satan’s Pet Pig” 2007. In the Red Records. Lo-fi garage rock via Montreal. Little Satan’s Pet Pig is The Demon’s Claws second album and it’s a raucous hot mess, in a good way. Echoey vocals like they’re sung through a tin can, sprinklings of psychobilly and good ol’ time country swing with a bit of harmonica here and there (“1000 Rounds,” and “That Old Outlaw” as the titles might imply), some really roughed-up Stones styled rhythm and blues (“Gun to My Head”), but mostly irreverent garage punk, that manic energy likely pushed forward with the band hiring Jay Reatard to master the record. I prefer those wild numbers that really put the punk into the 60′s garage sound like “Shadow of a Castle,” the title track “Satan’s Little Pet Pig,”“Unemployment,” and “Cecile Lemay” which throws in a taste of that 60′s psych-garage organ sound to add to the insanity. The track “Hunting on the 49″ is really great – it reminds me of “Fed From Her Hand,” on their 2010 LP The Defrosting Of which I believe was the first song I heard by them. That track prompted me to buy that record – the song is a little like Nirvana’s cover of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” – simple and folksy with super-dark, creepy vibe.

The Demon’s Claws “The Defrosting of…” 2010. In The Red Records. Dark and psychedelic garage punk with some chunks of country-blues via Montreal, The Defrosting of… was The Demon’s Claws’ fifth full-length release, their second on In The Red, and I’m pretty sure the first I bought after hearing the record’s opening track “Fed From Her Hand” which is creepy, sparse and really great. I also like the spaghetti-western tinged “Mona’s Lunch,” the hard and fast rocking “Laser Beams,” the crisp and punchy “At the Disco,” and the Rolling Stones-ish (Sticky Fingers-era) “Anny Lou” (though they take that country-blues trashed twang too far on the tracks “Fucked on Ketamine” and “Weird Ways” which I really don’t like). Though overall I like the sparse, lo-fi trashy sound of The Demon’s Claws, I have to admit that it does get kinda stale with an entire listen-through, like every song feels that it is a rehash of the one that went before it or they’re all in the same key – that’s not actually the case but somewhere in there a palette-cleanser of a track is needed.
