Jack White “Help Me Stranger (demo)” 2019. Third Man Records. Split single with fellow Raconteur Brendan Benson. Part of the Third Man Vault package #40 Help Us Stranger LP. Both songs are early demo recordings of two songs from the 2019 LP – “Help Me Stranger” and “Somedays (I Don’t Feel Like Trying).” Neither seem to be available to listen to online so here’s my take. I adore the Racontuers’ single “Help Me Stranger” (Help Us Stranger one of my top LP’s from 2019) and White’s acoustic demo version is sparse – even a bit hollow, haunting and super-short. While completely different, it gave me MTV Unplugged Nirvana “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” vibes. Brendan Benson’s demo of “Somedays (I Don’t Feel Like Trying)” is fully electric with a bluesy, country twang – all bendy guitar, a waltz beat and a sad, sad voice. Here’s a sort-of similar version from 2020:

The Raconteurs “Live in Tulsa” 2020. Third Man Records, Vault Package 43. Yesterday June 9th was Jack White’s 48th birthday (b. John Gillis, 1975). The triple LP box set captures The Raconteurs shows at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa from October 13th, 14th and 16th in 2019 (all sold out). Being a Third Man Vault release, it comes gorgeously packaged, on green, copper and black vinyl with extras thrown in: a flexi-disk of The Raconteurs “I’m Your Puppet,” a cover originally by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham and made famous by James & Bobby Purify (1966). The Vault package also supposedly came with a blu-ray of two acoustic performances by Jack White and Brendon Benson from 1999 and 2019 but I can’t find it; either ours was packaged without it (unlikely) or I stashed it somewhere 3-1/2 years ago and forgot what I did with it (very likely: I think we received Vault #43 exactly when the pandemic began and I was, to put it lightly, a bit distracted).

The Tulsa shows are blistering high energy with some covers and medleys sprinkled into the Raconteur mix. Some of my favorites include the little infusion of the Beatles’ “Blackbird” (with an endearing false-start) into “Top Yourself” from the 2008 Consolers of the Lonely and the songs “Gloria” and “I Want Candy” into “Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness)” from the 2019 Help Us Stranger LP. Other top picks are “Help Me Stranger,” “Sunday Driver,” “Only Child” (all from Help Us Stranger), the frenetic and borderline bonkers “Salute Your Solution” (from Consolers) and “Steady As She Goes” (from the 2006 album Broken Boy Soldiers).

The Greenhornes “Stayed Up Last Night” 1999. Italy Records. Recorded by Jack White in his Detroit home. Classic 60’s garage sound by Cincinnati rockers who would be future 00’s stars. “Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler would go on to be the rhythm section in the Raconteurs [Lawrence was also in Dead Weather and Blanche, Keeler has provided vocals for The White Stripes and has performed on records by Loretta Lynn, The Dirtbombs and Wanda Jackson to name a few] while Brian Olive would later join the Soledad Brothers” (from the Third Man Records online store, which re-issued this single in 2017).

Both tracks on the 7″ single, “Stayed Up Last Night” and “Shadow of Grief,” are straight-up first-era garage rockers, with a sound like early Stones and the Kinks. Both are a great mix of bright, jangly blues and rocking rhythm; “Shadow of Grief” has that classic 60’s organ sound and some country twang while “Stayed Up Last Night” has some killer blues harmonica.

The Raconteurs “Help Us Stranger” 2019. Third Man Records. Limited edition green/black/copper swirled vinyl, part of Third Man’s Vault Package, #40. Help Us Stranger is The Raconteurs third album and it debuted #1 on the US album chart in June when it was released, only to dive to #45 the following week. That dramatic drop is too bad and unwarranted because it’s a really really great album. I’ve found myself listening to it frequently since it came out, proving my thesis that Jack White is a genius but only truly palatable when he’s collaborating with other musicians that enhance and rein in that genius. He and Brendan Benson have written some really good and even addictive alt-pop tracks. My favorites come in a 1-2-3-4 punch at the start of the record. Track 1, “Bored and Dazed” starts off with a Grateful Dead-ish riff that quickly morphs into a big early 70′s scuzz-rock/Midwest protopunk ripper, punctuated with the line “Well I’m Detroit bored and razed.” “Help Me Stranger” is ridiculously catchy and I think maybe my favorite of favorites but there’s a lot of competition for that with the sadly beautiful “Only Child.” “Don’t Bother Me” is dense and loud, reminding me of some of White’s work on some of the later White Stripes stuff as well as his mostly decent solo material on Blunderbuss and Lazaretto with the prominent garage-style organ. On Side B The Raconteurs’ cover of Donovan’s “Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness)” is a great update to the original, punching up the Bo Diddley beat and adding in screaming guitar. I also like the head-banging “Sunday Driver” which I heard earlier in the year when Third Man included the 7″ as part of Vault Package #38; that song is a great partner to “Bored and Razed” for that hard-edged 70′s Detroit sound but adds in elements of 60′s psychedelia. The Vault Package also came with an early demo 7″ of “Help Me Stranger” and “Somedays (I Don’t Feel Like Trying)” but I haven’t listened to it yet. Also included is a Patrick Keeler-designed Raconteurs bandana and a turntable slipmat.

The Raconteurs “Now That You’re Gone” and “Sunday Driver” 2018. Today, July 9th, is Raconteurs/White Stripes/Dead Weather/solo artist Jack White’s birthday (b. John Gillis, 1975). This double A-side single on copper foil vinyl was part of last year’s Third Man Vault package #38, a reissue of The Raconteurs’ Consolers of the Lonely for its 10th anniversary. Both tracks appear on their newest album, Help Us Stranger, which came out last month (and I received as a Third Man Vault package but haven’t gotten around to giving it a serious listen yet. Both songs are pretty good (much better than White’s last solo release, Boarding House Reach from 2018) but I prefer the harder rocking “Sunday Driver” to the more mellow, bluesy “Now That You’re Gone.” The guitar work on both is pretty excellent (I assume that’s White playing) and the tracks are pretty straight-forward and melodic, with “Sunday Driver” adding in an element of head-banging and ass-shaking. In my opinion, when Jack White collaborates (whether it’s with Brenden Benson, Meg White or Allison Mosshart) he’s in his best form and some of his wackier whims are tempered.

The Raconteurs “Consolers of the Lonely” 2008/2018. Third Man Records, Vault Package #38 10 year anniversary special edition on copper foil metallic vinyl.

As with most Vault subscription packages, this one comes loaded with a bunch of extras: four large and slick photos of the band members, a “R” insignia embroidered patch (“for your rocker jean jacket”), four silver stickers of artwork from the album and a 45″ single of two new Raconteur songs, “Now That You’re Gone” and “Sunday Driver” (which I’ll review in another post).

When the album first dropped in 2008, it was the band’s second LP and, mostly, a complete surprise to the public (though it was accidentally leaked a little early on iTunes) as the band had only finished recording it a couple of weeks prior to its release. It hit #7 in the US and #8 in the UK, receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album and winning the Best Engineered Non-Classical album category. Consolers of the Lonely is big music on a big double album: power chords and riffs, horns, organ, piano, strings, a banjo, stylophone and clavinet for goodness’ sake. An album Allmusic describes as a “bubbling blend of bizarro blues, rustic progressive rock, fractured pop, and bludgeoning guitars.” Some of my favorite tracks have pretty much all of those things – “The Switch and the Spur,” “Hold Up,” “Attention” and the Zeppelin-esque “These Stones Will Shout.” I also really like the laid-back vibe of the slide-guitar heavy “Top Yourself.” I’m not as crazy about the country-twinged and twanged, old-time saloony “Pull This Blanket Off” and the 80′s hair-metal-power-ballad-meets-Queen-rock-opera “Rich Kid Blues” is both awesome and weird and I can’t decide if I love it or not. The Raconteurs released four singles from Consolers of the Lonely. The first they released the same day as the album, “Salute Your Solution” which went to #4 on Billboard’s Rock Songs chart. The second single was “Many Shades of Black” which went to #37 on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart and had a version performed by Adele. The last two singles, “Old Enough” and “Consoler of the Lonely” did not chart (at least I don’t think so).

The Raconteurs “Steady, As She Goes” b/w “Store Bought Bones” 2006 (2014 reissue), Third Man Records. “Steady, As She Goes” was the first song written by the collaborative forces of Jack White and Brendan Benson, that success resulted in the formation of The Raconteurs, adding Patrick Keeler and Jack Lawrence (from the Cincinnati-based The Greenhornes, to round out my Cincy-heavy week, i.e. Suck the Honey and Lemon Sky) to complete the indie rock supergroup. This debut single hit #54 on the Hot 100 chart in the US (#1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart) and #4 in the UK and was nominated for a Grammy award in 2007. Both “Steady, As She Goes” and “Store Bought Bones” appear on The Raconteurs’ first LP Broken Boy Soldiers. Both tracks have a distinct groove; I love the sparse funky bass line on “Steady” and the 60′s flavored organ punctuating weird rhythms on “Store Bought Bones.”

There are two different videos for “Steady, As She Goes.” The first one has kind of grainy footage with 60′s 8mm lighting of the band with farm animals and a creepy abandoned farmhouse. The second video features Paul Reubens as an over-the-top villain rigging a soap box race, with the band members as the racers, drummer Patrick Keeler keeping time on the drums the whole race, even after he careens over a cliff.
