Youth Brigade “Sink with California” 1983/2023. Trust Records/BYO Records, limited edition “Punk Rock Bowling 2023” red vinyl. We’re heading to Vegas tomorrow for Punk Rock Bowling and while Youth Brigade isn’t performing this year, the festival is still run by BYO (Youth Brigade’s own label) and at least one of the Stern brothers from the band. Since I’ll be featuring a lot of vinyl next week by bands that are playing PRB, I figure I’d get into the mood with one of my favorite, and most significant, songs and bands from my 80’s punk days.

“Sink with California” appears on Youth Brigade’s 1983 version of the LP Sound & Fury (a different version was released in ’82) and that album was one of my most-listened to in the mid-80’s – me and my friends played it constantly so it was a huge thrill for me to finally see them play that track (and a ton more) in 2021 at our first Punk Rock Bowling experience, when there was a small pause in the pandemic. (I am very much looking forward to not having to wear a mask and standing in line to get a wristband proving my vaccination status this year!) Side B has another one of my top tracks from Sound & Fury: “Blown Away” which is a catchy-as-hell high-speed anthemic anti-war song. While I am soooo excited to see a bunch of great bands this upcoming weekend (The Chats, 999, Cosmic Psychos, Stiff Little Fingers, etc) I would be extra stoked if Youth Brigade staged a surprise appearance 🤞

7 Seconds “Walk Together E.P.” 1984/2023. Trust Records. Today, March 24th, is Kevin Seconds’ 63rd birthday (b. Kevin Marvelli, 1961). This 7″ on black & yellow splatter vinyl is from the limited edition Trust Records Walk Together Rock Together reissue – I’ll write about that some other time, probably after we see 7 Seconds play at the end of May in Las Vegas. I’m not entirely sure why Trust decided to call this an E.P. as it’s just two songs (though maybe it’s because the artwork on the 7″ is the original cover for Walk Together, Rock Together). Both songs, produced by 7 Seconds and Ian MacKaye, originally appeared on the 1986 Pushead comp Cleanse the Bacteria along with other 80’s punk bands like Corrosion of Conformity, Septic Death and Enola Gay. Side A has “Regress No Way” which is fast-n-hard classic 7 Seconds socially aware punk decrying narrow-minded attitudes about people who don’t conform to the “norm” of 80’s society (ie the rampant anti-gay attitudes of the 80’s that still haven’t totally gone away). Side B is “We’re Gonna Fight” which is practically epic in length (over 3 minutes!), more mid-tempo (for punk); it’s also about fighting narrow-mindedness and oppression.

Circle Jerks “Wild in the Streets” 1982/2022. Limited deluxe edition on orange and white striped vinyl. Trust Records. This past weekend was Keith Morris’ birthday (b. 1955) and I’m finally getting around to writing about Wild in the Streets which celebrated its 40th anniversary this past March. The special reissue comes with a super-high quality booklet and live bonus tracks which were recorded at The Elite Club in San Francisco in April ’82. The band recorded the studio tracks in one day (in a room next to another studio where Mötley Crüe were recording) and mixed it in three “in Herb Alpert’s private studio, Studio D. It was his private room.” “I was setting up the drums and this guy comes up to me and starts asking, ‘Where did you start to play?’ It was like, ‘Buddy, we’re gonna be here for a few hours and then we’re done. I really haven’t got so much patience to answer all these questions.’ Later on one of the techs says, ‘You know, that was Herb Alpert you were talking to.’ It was ironic because I was a huge fan of Nick Ceroli who was Herb’s drummer.” (Lucky, CJ’s drummer, from the LP booklet)

The lead/title track, one of CJ’s best-known songs and an 80’s punk anthem, “Wild in the Streets” is a cover of a ’73 single by Garland Jeffereys. CJ first recorded it in ’80 for Posh Boy Records and it appeared on the comp Rodney on the ROQ. There are two other cover songs on Wild in the Streets: “Just Like Me” (Paul Revere & the Raiders – one of my favorite 60’s songs ever) and Jackie DeShannon‘s “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” which is kinda hilarious as a hardcore punk song. Other notable tracks from the original album are, for me, “Question Authority” and “Moral Majority.” The bonus live tracks include fast and raw versions of “Letter Bomb,” “Wild in the Streets” and “Stars and Stripes.”

I finally got a chance to see Circle Jerks last year in Las Vegas where they headlined the second night of Punk Rock Bowling. Their performance of “Wild in the Streets” was a definite highlight of the weekend.

We have an original of The Crew but after hearing Scott Crawford’s “Spoke” podcast interview with Kevin Seconds a couple months back, I decided I needed this reissue in the collection (Trust Records had the band’s blessing).

7 Seconds was one of my favorite punk bands in the 80′s; I feel like I saw them every few months in the Fox Valley area: at the Ridgeway in Neenah (I got to sit on the side of the stage during that show) and ABC Boxing and Kutska’s Hall in Green Bay (we partied with the band at my friend’s house after one of the Kutska’s show). I still have some of the flyers for those shows in my collection that look pretty similar to the ones in the booklet.

The Crew was 7 Seconds’ first full-length release, put out after a slew of singles and a ton of touring. It’s an absolute hardcore punk classic, fast, hard but still melodic with whoa-whoa-whoa anthems like “Not Just Boys Fun” (always a favorite of us girls at the shows – 7 Seconds was a very female-friendly band for punk girls at concerts), “This is the Angry Pt. 2,” the title track “The Crew,” “Colorblind” and “Young Til I Die.” They had originally intended to put out their first record on Alternative Tentacles (Jello was a big fan of the band) to be titled United We Stand. Alternative Tentacles was going through some financial shit (read the booklet for the details) and Shawn Stern of BYO was pursuing 7 Seconds for a release so they ended up going that route, putting some of the tracks that they recorded for United We Stand onto The Crew.
