Garage punk “supergroup” composed of Ty Segall, Chris Shaw (Ex-Cult) and Charles Moothart (Fuzz). Their debut 7″ single is fuzzy, fast and ass-shakey. Ty has had about a million side-projects over the years but according to the band’s Discog bio “This is not a side-project, it is a necessity. GØGGS is three heads, one spine, circling the drain of the wasteland known as mother earth….The three of us have been friends for years at this point, crashing at each others houses and riffling through each others record collections after a night of performing, partying, or both…Ty and I decided we were going to start a band together when Ex-Cult opened for his band on the Slaughterhouse tour in 2013. A couple years later when the plans were solidified, it only made sense that thrash master Charles Moothart should get in on the experience.” (Shaw)

The b-side is an Iggy Pop cover, “Billy is a Runaway.” It’s even fuzzier (with some truly signature Segall buzz) accented with saxophone (played by Zumi Oneiro) and an intentionally off-kilter rhythm section, making it a wonky cacophony of weirdness. It’s pretty great.

Ty Segall “Three Bells” releases January 26th, 2024 (tomorrow!) – it’s so new the shrink wrap is still on. Drag City Records. Double LP. Ty’s 15th LP release (under Ty Segall; he’s in a million other projects too). Since I just got this record (early!), I’m only on my second listen but it’s awesomely psychedelically rocking, buzzed and fuzzed – reliably excellent Ty Segall.

We all got a sneak peek into the vibe of this latest release back in September with the single “Eggman” which is a great, super-weird T.Rex-ish track with an ever weirder video. I’m fairly certain he played it when we saw him this past October and would have happily paid extra (oh wait, we were on the guest list!) to see him eat eggs hilariously/disturbingly like he does here:

My top track is the super-groovy, wicked ass-shaking “ I Hear” which is all bass and beats, massive buzzy, bendy guitar. I also really like the opener “The Bell” which has a 60’s psych/twee thing going on: think Donovan but then morphs into a Zeppelin IV jam and “Move” which is sung by, I think, his wife Denée Segall: it’s weird as hell. Since Three Bells technically isn’t out yet, I can’t include any links for those tracks…and likely will not remember to come back to edit this post so go look them up online starting tomorrow [UPDATE: I remembered to come back and include links!]. In the meantime, here’s a delightful video from the Three Bells track “My Best Friend” which is available – it’s not one of my top tracks but Ty’s best friend is simply adorable so I’m 100% including it.

Grave Flowers Bongo Band “Strength of Spring” 2021. Castle Face Records, green swirled vinyl. Produced by Ty Segall, Strength of Spring is the L.A.-based psych-rockers second album. It’s a swirling mix of acoustic and electric guitar (courtesy of Gabe Flores, also of Hooveriii), hypnotic rhythms (Owen Barrett, also in Hooveriii) plus some pedal steel (Olaf Selland). Ty Segall’s touch definitely shines through in the best way: tracks like “Animal Lord” and “VATMM” would be right at home on any of Ty’s multitude of releases. Other top tracks include the sax-forward (played by Flores), the hypnotic “Sleepy Eyes,” “Smile,” and the groovy-bass’d “Outer Bongolia” (lol that song name: their Bandcamp hashtags “weed vehicle” as one possible genre to file the record under).

Ty Segall “Hello, Hi” released today, July 22nd, 2022. Drag City Records. It’s my birthday today so it’s pretty awesome that I have Ty’s latest release in hand to spin (we received this preorder a couple of days ago, it includes a cassette of what I assume is the same material on the vinyl edition). In the incredibly small chance that Ty himself reads this: I’m doing much better, three weeks after the stage dive incident at the First Avenue show in Minneapolis. My neck and shoulder are only a little stiff and sore now.

Hello, Hi is a mostly mellow acoustic album (he opened his show at First Avenue with “Good Morning” from Hello, Hi and possibly “Saturday Pt. 1” and “Saturday Pt. 2“). Much of its sound is reminiscent of pre-glam T. Rex when Marc Bolan and Steve Peregrin Took were doing their psychedelic folk thing, sounding like they would be most comfortable strumming a lute around the May Pole. Recorded in 2020 during the pandemic shutdown (the closing song “Distraction” pretty much perfectly sums up those weird months), Hello, Hi feels very introspective, intimate and quiet: many tracks are just Ty alone with his guitar, his voice frequently high and a little warbly as if just at the edge of being overcome by emotion – see especially “Blue” when his overdubbed harmonies croon “you can’t erase the pain.” His cover of The Mantles‘ “Don’t Lie” is lovely and lilting and “Looking At You” is simply beautiful, a little reminiscent of Led Zeppelin’s mellower work, and one of my favorite songs on the record. He does add in some electric buzz and fuzz as the song builds toward its end. My top track is the total, all-out buzzed and fuzzed title track rocker “Hello, Hi.”

A double LP, the glammy psychedelic garage rock album Manipulator was Seegal’s seventh studio release; it went to #45 on the US album chart (and to #8 on the Alternative Album chart) and to #73 in the UK. We saw Ty play this past weekend at First Avenue in Minneapolis, where he played mainly from his 2021 release Harmonizer and probably tracks from his forthcoming album Hello, Hi due to be released later this month.

It was an awesome show that started with him playing solo acoustic for a couple of songs before his Freedom band joined and tore the roof off in a maelstrom of fuzz and buzz. We had secured a spot right up front which was excellent – until it wasn’t. There had been a small pit that formed and unformed throughout the concert, which was mildly irritating but manageable. However at the final encore, a couple of guys charged the security fence and leaped over. This is where things get hazy for me and I didn’t see what happened but the next thing I know, a guy apparently must have made it up onstage and dived – right onto me. He hit me at the base of my neck/top of my thoracic spine and I went down. I was pulled from the crowd and made it to a wall where I think I was surrounded by security asking me if I was OK. I was able to respond to indicate that I did not want them to call an ambulance as I was able to move my head and process thought enough to know what was going on (and to know that I did not want the medical bills associated with an ambulance ride and ER visit). When the last song ended and Joe went to get the car (no way was I up for walking through downtown Minneapolis to get to where we parked), security got me a massive bag of ice from the bar and I literally laid down on the floor of First Ave, draped over that ice. After a few minutes, Ty himself came out to check on me and find out how I was doing. He apologized profusely (I let him know it wasn’t his fault!), we commiserated on how the kids these days don’t know pit and stage-dive etiquette (Ty: “You make direct eye contact first! Then you go!”). He also expressed his love for Spotted Cow beer when he learned I was from Wisconsin (you can’t get Spotted Cow outside of the state and he had loaded up while driving through) and offered me one (I declined). He also offered me free tickets to any of his shows from here on out. (I’ve been in contact with his manager and she’s confirmed free shows for me!) So I guess that’s cool even though I still am sore and have weird nerve shit happening in my arms and hands two days later.

Anyway, Manipulator: it too is fuzzy, buzzy and awesome. My top tracks are “It’s Over,” the groovy ass-shaker “Feel,” the extra-glammy/Marc Bolan-dentical “The Clock,” “The Hand” and the Stooges-inspired “The Crawler.”

Another top track is the super-catchy “Tall Man Skinny Lady” – the video linked below is from Ty and his Manipulator Band performing at Grimey’s in Nashville, which is perfect because that’s where we picked up this copy of Manipulator just a few weeks ago. (Two of the guys in the band are in his current Freedom band: though the guitarist is now on drums.)

Ty Segall “Harmonizer” 2021. Drag City Records. Segall’s latest release – though he’s so prolific that it’s entirely possible that he’ll have put out a couple of singles and a collaborative EP or two by the time I’ve finished this post. Heavy, fuzzy psychedelic garage rock that adds in some “synthtastic” sounds (that’s from the album press release) which honestly had me a bit nervous upon listening to the bleep-bloop opener “Learning.” On the rest of the album he thankfully mixes space-age synth with his signature glammy buzzed-out guitar, catchy riffs and melodies so the rest of the record is Ty-tastic (I love synth! just weirded out with that first track, and a little by “Ride,” too). Two tracks have been released as singles, the excellent heavy-beat title track “Harmonizer” and “Feel Good” upon which his wife, Denée Segall, sings icy cold lead. Pretty sure neither have charted anywhere, Segall flying mostly under the radar, though the LP did hit #34 on the UK’s Independent Album chart. My other favorites include “Whisper” and the chest-rattling “Waxman.”

Side B’s “Black Magick” is considerably more laid-back: still fuzzy but more sweetly melodic and psychedelic in the tripped-out Sgt. Peppers 60′s style. Both songs are great but this little bite of vinyl definitely has me wanting more (I mean, Segall is ridiculously and notoriously prolific so it’s not like I really need more releases, just more from this train of thought).

Ty Segall “First Taste” 2019. Drag City Records. I’m pretty sure a year ago today, or close to it, we were supposed to be seeing Ty perform in Chicago as part of the extended tour for this album. Well, we all know how that turned out. I had set aside this release, his eleventh studio album and at this point the last solo recording (he put out releases with both Fuzz and Wasted Shirt in 2020) to write about as part of that show review. Clearly I have officially given up on that. Anyway! First Taste, which went to #13 on the US Independent Album chart, is excellent fuzzy, buzzy, spaced-out garage rock, though a bitch to photograph with its book-fold opening – the cover kept collapsing onto the vinyl.

My top tracks are the lead song “Taste,” the trippy “I Worship the Dog,” the super-excellent, 60′s pop-psych groove (with killer mandolin!) of both “The Arms” and “I Sing Them,” the ass-shaking funk of the short instrumental “When I Met My Parents (Part 1)” (there’s also a “When I Met My Parents (Part 3)” but no Part 2 🤷‍♀️) and the mandolin and pipe flute-infused “Lone Cowboys” that feels like an English folk tune (think Jethro Tull) dropped into a jazzy spaghetti western with a hit of flamenco. Weird weird shit but super-groovy.

Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin “Reverse Shark Attack” In the Red Records (reissued in 2012, originally pressed by Kill Shaman Records, 2009). Heavily fuzzed, psychedelic noisy garage punk and it’s so so good. Side A is jam-packed with seven fairly short, punchy and loud tracks; my favorites are “Wear Black,” “Drop Dead Baby,” “Doctor Doctor” and “Bikini Babes” (that last one so excellently 60′s psych-garage inspired) – all are totally danceable. Also great is Segall and Cronin’s cover of Pink Floyd’s 1967 “Take Up Thy Stethescope and Walk” – it’s completely insane. Side B has just one very long song, the title track “Reverse Shark Attack” which is just as nuts: distorted vocals, 60′s pop melodies, loping to crashing rhythms, abrupt tempo changes and general psychedelic freak-outs. Segall and Cronin grew up together in Laguna Beach, California (Cronin was born in ‘85 and Segall in ‘87) and while Segall is now probably the better known of the pair, Cronin’s resume is pretty impressive: he’s been in Segall’s backing band (working on Slaughterhouse, Emotional Mugger, Ty Segall and Freedom’s Goblin), Thee Oh Sees (on Drop), Okie Dokie and others besides issuing four of his own solo albums.

Ty Segall “Twins” 2012. Drag City Records. Twins was Segall’s fifth studio album (and his third release of 2012) and like most of Segall’s records it’s heavily fuzzed, glamorously psychedelic and catchy as hell. It went to the top of CMJ’s album chart with two released singles: “The Hill” and “Would You Be My Love.” “The Hill” is Lucy In the Sky-level psychedelia but with a lot more frenetically-distorted guitar and “Would You Be My Love” is fuzzily glammed-up garage punk. I also really like the opening track “Thank God for Sinners,” the propulsive glam rocker “They Told Me Too,” the Stooge-y “Love Fuzz,” the ridiculously catchy 60′s garage-rocker “Who Are You” and the sweetly melodic and acoustic “Gold On the Shore.” While Twins was generally very well-received by critics, some complained that it was a “grab bag” that stylistically veered all over the place. I don’t think so. Segall’s unique vocals and guitar keeps his myriad of influences (Bowie, T. Rex, the Beatles, grunge – see in particular “Ghost” for that last one) gives Twins continuity and the supposed style changes provide excitement rather than ADHD whiplash.
