Vacation “Vacation” 2011. Let’s Pretend Records, the debut LP from Cincinnati garage rockers. I’ve been holding onto this record for a bit now in hopes that Vacation would be swinging back through Milwaukee for a show. I think the last time they were here was a couple of years ago, maybe for my pal Claire’s birthday, and looking at their Bandcamp page (if it’s up-to-date) they haven’t been out on tour for almost 2 years. Their live performances are wild and dynamic, body-tossing energy abounds. Vacation is noisy, buzzy and highly bop-able – they definitely have some pop sensibilities behind the fuzz. “People Watching” is one of the more pop-forward on Vacation. My top pick is the ass-shaking “Co-Workers.” I also like the gritty “Bleach Buzz,” the lo-fi garage-thundering “Cop Knock” and the frenetic “Sun and Moon.”

There isn’t a lot out there video-wise (though their name is pretty difficult for googling) but here is a live performance from 2011 of what I’m fairly certain is the track “Christopher Columbus Was Not a Hero” off of Vacation.

Vacation “Zen Quality Seed Crystal” 2019. Salinas Records. Garagey, gritty noise pop from Cincinnati, Zen Quality Seed Crystal is listed as an EP on Vacation’s Discogs page, but with nine fully realized songs, I’m not sure why (maybe it’s because it’s at 45rpm). If counted as an LP, it would be their 6th or 7th full-length release. My top tracks include the locomotive, chunky guitar opener “Hole That Once Held a Screw,” noisy dream-popped “Captain Unsensible,” the fuzzy garage rocker “Tricks of the Big Cat Trade,” and the weird yet hypnotic beat of “Professor Messenger.” I’m less crazy about the waltzing, fun-housed “Me and Mr Bathory” – it’s a bit ear-grating – and while “Capitol Drive” is really decent, it feels pretty formulaic pop-punk especially when put into context of most of the rest of record which has a more experimental, intentional lo-fi (or rather “mid-fi” in their words) sound – think recording in the stairwell of a cold industrial warehouse while singing into a cardboard tube. That said, they probably played this track when we saw them in April 2022 at the Cactus Club: it most likely ripped hard and I danced my a** off.

Today is my friend Claire’s birthday and this past Saturday was her birthday show at Promises bar here in Milwaukee with Vacation headlining. Unfortunately I had a work weekend and couldn’t go but Joe went and said “a good time was had by all.” I was super-bummed to miss them; the show we caught last April 2022 at Cactus Club was killer.

Vacation, from Cincinnati, are self-described grit-pop. Their sound is punky, punchy garage rock and highly danceable especially if you’re into high speed pogo’ing. Southern Grass is their fourth full-length (I think, they have a ton of singles and EP’s as well), jam packed with a whopping 32 tracks of all-out fun (though they do slow down occasionally, like on the melancholy “Without You”). My top tracks are the fun ones, though. On Vol. 1 those include the opener “Sharptooth Tinsel Town,” “El Bako” and the high-end psychedelically fuzzed “Blueberry Patch.” On Vol. 2 my top picks are “Sleepyhead,” the Pistol-esque “Lose Interest” with lots of snot and swagger, the darkly buzzed “Everyone Can Touch Me” and the post-punk dissonance of “The All.”

Vacation “Existential Risks and Returns” 2021. Salinas Records. Gritty garage pop punk from Cincinnati. We caught Vacation at Cactus Club this past Friday night – it was our first time seeing them (they’ve been around since 2009). My friend and front-row short girl buddy Claire pestered me to go to the show and I am so glad that we did – it was excellent! I hadn’t listened to them before but previewed Existential Risks on Bandcamp prior to the performance and picked up the LP (their seventh) at the merch table.

They put on a super high-energy show: loud and tight with lots of rock and roll moves:

Vacation at Cactus Club: the bassist catching some serious air

I nabbed a shot of the setlist at the end of their set (another audience member was going to grab it but one of the Vacation guys was all like, “No we need that for the next show” — this Milwaukee performance was the second-to-last on their current tour).

Vacation played a couple of my top tracks from Existential Risks and Returns including my favorite, the hypnotic, tense and slinky “Controlled Burn” as well as the LP opener “Colored By Numbers” and “Ripe.” Other favorites from Existential Risks and Returns are “Liberty Tax Statue Man” which feels like a mix of The Who, Bachman–Turner Overdrive and Velvet Underground, “Quantum Cafe” and the killer all-out rocking album closer “Road Kill Cactus.”

Go Go’s “Vacation” 1982. Today, August 17th, is singer Belinda Carlisle’s birthday (b. 1958). The Vault is also heading out on vacation later this week so it’s a perfect pull.

Vacation is the Go Go’s second album and it reached #8 in the US, the single “Vacation” also reaching #8 in the summer of ‘82 (and may have been the first single to ever be released on cassette). The LP’s other two singles, “Get Up and Go” and “He’s So Strange,” did not do as well: the former – a fun pop rocker with a classic Bo Diddley beat – reached #50 and the latter failed to chart at all. Overall Vacation is a fun pop record, perfect for spinning on a portable player at the beach, playing frisbee and watching the speedboats pull water skiers. Here’s a picture from our up-north trip last summer of the Min-Aqua Bats in Minocqua, WI and, for obvious reasons, “Vacation” was my ear worm for a few days.
