White Stripes “Elephant XX” 2023. Third Man Records, Vault package no. 55, the 20th anniversary reissue of their smash Elephant released on April 1st, 2003. The Vault pressing is a 2-LP colored vinyl release (one red, one white) that also includes a Jack White 7″ single, a DVD and a gorgeous 28 page booklet of show posters, photographs and other assorted ’03 memorabilia. Up til now, we only have had Elephant on CD (because, of course, 2003).

Elephant is the band’s fourth LP and far and away their most successful as well as critically acclaimed. It’s included on many best-of-ever lists and won both the Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Song (“Seven Nation Army”) at the Grammy’s. It went to #6 in the US and to #1 in the UK. It’s totally digital/computer-free; the White Stripes recorded it with all pre-60’s gear onto an eight-track tape machine. For the most part it’s hard to tell but I can feel that old-school tech straining its edges on “There’s No Home for You Here” about which Jack White said they recorded “to see how far we could go with an eight track recorder, and I think how far we went is too far.” (I love it, though, it sounds like super-early Beatles or Stones).

They released four singles from Elephant. The first was the mega-power-hit “Seven Nation Army” which only went to #76 on the main US chart but hit #1 on the alternative charts in both the US and the UK. The track now an ubiquitous sports arena fav which is a bit of a head-scratcher to me, more for the genre it comes from than the song itself which is simple, rhythmic and primal aka perfect for sports. According to Wiki, “This phenomenon has its roots in a UEFA Champions League football match in Italy in October 2003, during which fans of Belgium’s Club Brugge KV began singing the riff in a game against Italy’s A.C. Milan. They continued the chant after Club Brugge KV striker Andrés Mendoza scored a goal. Club Brugge KV won the game, and the song subsequently became the team’s “unofficial sports anthem.” The second single was the cover of Burt Bacharach’s “I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself” (first recorded in ’62 by Chuck Jackson and then, also in ’62, by Tommy Hunt, finally made popular by Dusty Springfield in ’64). The Stripes version went to #25 on the US indie chart. The third single from Elephant was “The Hardest Button to Button” (#8 US alternative, #23 regular UK chart, #1 UK indie) and the final single was the aforementioned “There’s No Home for You Here.” I love all the singles and my other top picks from Elephant include the hard bluesy rocker “Ball and Biscuit” (fun fact: a friend of ours named her catering company Ball and Biscuit a couple of years after this LP’s release and her business is still going strong), “The Air Near My Fingers,” and “Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine,” a track that “was originally written for the band’s previous album, White Blood Cells, but Meg had disliked the song and it was removed. After debating it, the song was rerecorded and included in Elephant, but only after a line from the song was removed after it was deemed too harsh.” (wiki) Elephant does treat us to future-Jack White’s tendency towards bat-shit crazy, though, especially on the intro to the song “Little Acorns” (the rest of the song is pretty great though).

Jack White “Live: The Supply Chain Issues Tour” 2022. Third Man Records, Third Man Vault # 54. Last night Jack White performed a surprise show at the Empty Bottle in Chicago. We were not there, though we had the opportunity to go with our Vault membership. I probably would have scored tickets, too: even though they sold in out in a couple of minutes, one of my talents is securing exclusive, limited-access tickets, records etc. But our kid had a high school orchestra concert last night and we’ve missed far too many already (because of travel, a global pandemic, a couldn’t-miss 7 Seconds show, etc.). So being good parents, we skipped seeing Jack White in an intimate venue just 90 minutes or so from our house.

We did see Jack White on The Supply Chain Issues Tour here in Milwaukee in August and heard a lot of what’s on this 3-LP release, one in blue, one in white and one in black vinyl. As always, it is gorgeous with high production value and quality vinyl, printing and packaging. Also included is a 7″ of “Tip From You To Me” which I’ll write about separately. The live tracks are pulled from a variety of shows throughout the tour and the world: Germany, France, London, Vegas, Chicago, Austin, Detroit and more. None from the Milwaukee show, unfortunately.

Disk One is a collection of live tracks all from White’s 2022 release Fear of the Dawn. Some of the best are the hit “Hi-De-Ho,” “Taking Me Back” and particularly raucous and ass-shaking renditions of “What’s the Trick” performed in Frankfurt, Germany and “That Was Then (This is Now)” from Zurich Switzerland. Disk Two is a track-for-track performance of Entering Heaven Alive, performed on July 22nd, 2022, the day of the record’s release, in London at Union Chapel. Like the record, the acoustic(ish), folky show contrasts with the harder blues garage of Fear of the Dawn. Disk Three is super-interesting: it’s a mix of covers and spontaneous compositions. Some of the best covers include The Stooges “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” The Monks “I Hate You” and Willie Dixon/Bo Diddley’s “Diddy Wah Diddy.” The most surprising is White’s rendition of Black Flag’s “Nervous Breakdown.” It’s really hard to believe some of the off-the-top-of-his-blue-head songs were actually made up on the spot. “Gordie Howe Bridge” (performed in Detroit) is simply kicking and “I’m Running in Brooklyn Because I’ve Got Nowhere Else to Go” (obviously played in Brooklyn) is a killer punk blues.

I haven’t clicked through to see it (you have to create an account and I’m not willing to do that) but the show is available to view here:

https://all.worldconcert.site/Jack-White-at-Empty-Bottle-Chicago-IL-USA

Here’s a link to his concert in Paris that includes the “Hi-De-Ho” performance on The Supply Chain Issues Tour.

The White Stripes “De Stijl XX” 2020. Third Man Records. Third Man Vault Package 44, 2-LP set on colored vinyl (white, red) plus 1 DVD. Released for De Stijl‘s 20th anniversary, this box set is almost as thick as textbook and chock full of goodies including a 36-page glossy booklet of photos, tour flyers and ticket stubs. What it doesn’t include is De Stijl (#38 US Independent Albums, #137 UK) which is fine because we have already on vinyl. Instead it has a entire side of outtakes and demos on Side 1 (the acoustic version of “I’m Bound to Pack It Up” is particularly raw and beautiful) upon which Jack White often calls out the chord progressions, and Side 2 has recordings the White Stripes made while on tour in 2000: the 7″ limited edition tour-only single of Thee Headcoatees/Billy Childish‘s “You’re Right, I’m Wrong” and an early attempt at Burt Bacharach’s “I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself” (that song later re-recorded and appearing on Elephant). There’s three SubPop-released tracks, all Captain Beefheart covers (“The Party Of Special Things To Do,” “China Pig” and “Ashtray Heart“) on Side 2 as well, plus their excellent cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” (originally the b-side to “Hello Operator” on Sympathy for the Record Industry, Loretta Lynn’s “Rated X” and Blind Willie McTell’s “Lord, Send Me An Angel” (single on Sympathy for the Record Industry).

The second LP is from a live show at the Magic Stick in Detroit on December 31st, 2000. Since they were just back from a tour of Australia they play a couple of AC/DC covers: “Let There Be Rock” and “Dog Eat Dog,” Iggy Pop’s “I’m Bored,” plus live versions of some De Stijl songs like “You’re Pretty Good Looking (For a Girl),” “Little Bird” and “Let’s Build a Home.”

I haven’t watched the DVD yet but the Vault insert states that it is video of “TWO killer shows never seen or heard before their sharing here, from the peak of De Stijl touring…From June 15th [at Jay’s Upstairs, Missoula MT], the band performs strongly while advertising happy hour Pabst pints behind them. Only in Missoula. We think. Excitingly, this show is synched with crystalline soundboard recorded audio giving it an added ‘oomph’ not usually found on these videos…Follow that with the White Stripes first ever in-store performance at Fallout Records in Seattle on June 17th.” They performed a mix of originals and covers, including Bob Dylan’s “One More Cup of Coffee” and Robert Johnson’s “Stop Breaking Down.”

Jack White “Saturday Night Live 10-11-20″ Third Man Records. 2020/2021, part of the Third Man Vault package #47. After the 3-plus hours I spent last week listening to Live at the Masonic Temple, I needed a few days off before spinning this bonus 7″ single. Side A is a medley of three songs: “Don’t Hurt Yourself,” which White co-wrote with Beyonce (it appears on Lemonade; the song includes samples from Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks” and White has a serious Zeppelin vibe during the medley’s performance), White Stripes’ “Ball and Biscuit” (from Elephant) and “Jesus is Coming Soon” originally written by Blind Willie Johnson. Johnson wrote it “about the 1918 Spanish Flue outbreak that feels uniquely relatable in light of the current Covid-19 pandemic.” In fact, the reason White appeared on SNL that night was due directly to the pandemic; the original musical guest was country Morgan Wallen, but he was uninvited two days prior to airtime for violating safety protocols (he was filmed just days early at a crowded bar without a mask). Side B (irritatingly at 45rpm while Side A is 33rpm) has White’s solo song “Lazaretto,” the title track from his 2014 album. It’s been probably over 20 years since I’ve watched SNL so I didn’t see this until today, but it was pretty cool that White shredded the solo on a guitar specifically designed for him Eddie Van Halen who died just a few days earlier.

Jack White “Live at the Masonic Temple, Detroit 7/30/14″ 2021. Third Man Records (Vault Package 46). It’s a good thing I had off work today because this package is over 3 hours long, 38 songs and 4 LPs (white, blue, black and a marbled one of those 3 colors). I saw White perform about a week earlier in 2014 at the Eagles Club in Milwaukee on July 21st, 2014 and though I’m pretty sure he didn’t play for over three hours it certainly felt like it – it was at least 120 degrees in there, I was already hungover because it was my birthday eve and I drank too much, too early. I spent most of the show trying not to pass out and putting ice chunks down my neck that literally melted completely on contact. Anyway! It’s a great compilation, though exhausting, including a mix of White Stripes, Dead Weather, Raconteurs and solo material, plus a few covers (Led Zeppelin’s “Lemon Song” and Beck’s “Devils Haircut” for example). Some of my favorite include “I Cut Like a Buffalo” (Alison Mosshart and Dean Fertita joined him onstage for that one), “Icky Thump,” “Three Women,” “Sugar Never Tasted So Good” and “Hotel Yorba.” Around the two-hour mark it’s pretty obvious that White and his band are getting exhausted. “Steady, As She Goes” (which I usually love) is off-key in both the vocals and the keys. White sounds like he’s at the point of deranged fatigue during “That Black Bat Licorice” and the last three songs (which I assume are the encore) “My Doorbell,” “I Fought Piranhas” and “Seven Nation Army” feel like a race to the finish. That said, the package does a great job in quality materials (of course) and sound for a live show. Also included in the package is a 7″ of White’s Saturday Night Live performance from October 2020 but I’m too tired to listen to it now so will save that for another day.

John Gillis, 1975). This double A-side single on copper foil vinyl was part of last year’s Third Man Vault package #38, a reissue of The Raconteurs’ Consolers of the Lonely for its 10th anniversary. Both tracks appear on their newest album, Help Us Stranger, which came out last month (and I received as a Third Man Vault package but haven’t gotten around to giving it a serious listen yet. Both songs are pretty good (much better than White’s last solo release, Boarding House Reach from 2018) but I prefer the harder rocking “Sunday Driver” to the more mellow, bluesy “Now That You’re Gone.” The guitar work on both is pretty excellent (I assume that’s White playing) and the tracks are pretty straight-forward and melodic, with “Sunday Driver” adding in an element of head-banging and ass-shaking. In my opinion, when Jack White collaborates (whether it’s with Brenden Benson, Meg White or Allison Mosshart) he’s in his best form and some of his wackier whims are tempered.

Jack White “Live at Third Man Records” 2018. Vault Package #37, triple LP on black, blue and white vinyl. I’ve been hesitant to open this last Third Man Records Vault subscription package because of my reaction to Jack White’s latest LP Boarding House Reach but since Package #38 is set to arrive in the mail any day now, I figure I should catch up. Live at Third Man comes from two Jack White concerts, in Nashville at Third Man headquarters on March 16th and in Detroit at Class Corridor on April 18th, both intimate venues and the sonic warmth from these small spaces is evident in the music’s recording and the sound from the enthusiastic crowds.

Live at Third Man Records has a mix of tracks from White’s Boarding House Reach, Blunderbuss and Lazaretto, the 2017 single “Battle Cry” and a few White Stripes songs. Thankfully the live performance vehicle prevented White from a shit-ton of noodling and limited his weird experimentation (though there is still a bit of that courtesy of two keyboards) so the songs from Boarding House Reach are more tolerable than they are on the original. Those songs include “Over and Over and Over,” “Corporation,” “Why Walk a Dog?,” “Connected By Love,” “Ice Station Zebra,” “Hypermisophoniac” and “Respect Commander.” From Blunderbuss: “Blunderbuss,” “Love Interruption,” “Sixteen Saltines” and “Missing Pieces” which ends with a long diatribe against the lies told by the president of the US. From Lazaretto is just the title track “Lazaretto” (too bad, I really love several songs from that LP). Of course my favorite tracks on Live at Third Man are the White Stripes songs: “Wasting My Time,” “Hello Operator” (which starts out with an awesome audience sing-along), “Fell In Love With a Girl,” “Catch Hell Blues,” “Little Bird,” “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,” “I’m Slowly Turning Into You” and “Seven Nation Army.”

The package is deluxe, like most Vault packages tend to be (especially the ones featuring White) with super-high quality vinyl and record packaging. The gatefold is die-cut with mix-and-match artwork from the record sleeves to “provide fans with hours upon hours of flip-flopping fun” (LOL, really it took like 5 minutes to do this). The package also has three 8×10 photos from White’s live performances featuring Jack along with band members Dominic Davis (bass), Quincy McCrary (keyboards), Carla Azar (drums) and Neal Evans (keyboards) and a giant Jack White logo flag. I don’t know what the hell I’m going to do with that.

Soledad Brothers “Soledad Brothers” 2000. Estrus Records. Soledad Brothers is the first label-released album by the Ohio-based duo named for three incarcerated members of the Black Panthers. It’s garagey punk-blues, with a pinch of Southern gospel preacher (the LP’s second track, “The Weight of the World” is Jon Spencer-level fervency). The lo-fi buzz of Soledad Brothers is, not surprisingly, very White-Stripey; Jack White engineered the LP and Meg White is billed as the “3rd Soledad Brother,” playing drums on a few of the tracks. Citing inspiration from the great John Lee Hooker, songs like “Lovin’ Machine” and the mournful “Shining Path” skew very traditional Delta blues while other tracks like “Handle Song” recall the blues as filtered through the British Invasion lens.

Poet, blues scholar (and manager of the MC5) John Sinclair penned the liner notes for the LP. He writes, “Guitarist and vocalist Johnny Walker and drummer Ben Swank pay serious tribute to the three legendary black revolutionaries, not only assuming their name but honoring the black liberation struggle with a stripped-down, seriously raucous blues attack deeply rooted in the rawest idioms of the African American musical tradition…The Soledad Brothers are no cornball blues revival act but make a fresh, idiosyncratic, soulful extension of the blues into their own life experience and out into the world at large.”

We picked up this little gem when the Third Man Rolling Record Store stopped by Milwaukee earlier this year.
