Taxi Girls “Coming Up Roses” 2023. Wild Honey Records. 5 song EP from Montreal punks; their debut release. Fun fun girl punk: Ramones meets The Go Go’s with some growling spice. SO good! Sharp, short and edgy, with just five songs it’s a quick listen. All the tracks are great, but of the five my top picks are the grab you by the throat ass-shaking opener “After Effect” and “Hands Off” which is anthemic grrrl power – “keep your hands away from my body!” to a relentlessly driving bass and beat. Both “Sunshine” and the closer “Stay With Me” lean power pop/punk (both would feel very at home on the Dirtnap label) with 60’s pop vibes, complete with ooo ooo’s and harmonies. Since the three-piece group just formed a couple of years ago, there isn’t much out there about them. From their Bandcamp single (released a couple of months ago) “Rainy” page: “This past year, Taxi Girls shared stages with such notable acts as NOBRO, NOFX (final tour), Lagwagon , The Hives, Pansy Division – just to name a few. Iggy Pop played a pair of Taxi Girls tracks on his BBC 6 radio show in the UK.” Not sure if they will be touring the States anytime soon (you know, the Canada stuff 🙄) but hoping to catch them live sometime soon.

The Courettes “Salta Il Ramo” 2022. Wild Honey Records. Limited edition 7″ single, white vinyl. This was a little bonus freebie that arrived from Green Noise Records last week. I’ve never heard of The Courettes, who are a garage rock duo from Denmark and Brazil, on this 7″ singing “Salta Il Ramo” in Italian. Their original “Hop the Twig” (sung in English) came out in 2021; this remake was released for their European tour and RSD 2022. In both languages it’s fantastic: sultry lo-fi 60’s garage with a pyschobilly twang and a sexy beat. The b-side is another 60’s inspired track, “Non Ti Lascerò,” but with a more upbeat and beachy/girl-group/wall of sound vibe, also in Italian. The original English language version, “Won’t Let You Go,” as well as “Hop the Twig,” appears on their 2021 LP Back in Mono.

More about The Courettes courtesy of AllMusic since I have not heard of them til today: “Based in Denmark, the dynamic duo behind the Courettes is lead singer and guitarist Flavia Couri, originally from Brazil, and drummer Martin Couri, a native Dane and Flavia’s husband. The two met in Brazil in 2013, when his band played on a bill with hers during a tour of South America. They quickly hit it off musically, and in 2015 Flavia relocated to Denmark, where she and Martin formed the group. The duo went into the studio to lay down some songs, and while they had initially planned to add more musicians to the lineup, they were so happy with the way they sounded with just guitar and drums that they made their duo permanent.”
