MC’d by WMSE’s Sid McCain and Milwaukee Record‘s Matt Wild, the band played tracks from their 2019 LP You Talk Loud plus some sneak peeks from their forthcoming EP, tentatively titled the Hiatus EP, set for a Fall 2023 release.

The Local/Live event is one of my favorite Milwaukee live music series: it’s early (6:00 pm!), only an hour long (done by 7:00 pm!) and free (FREE!). But more importantly it’s a chance to hear some of the band’s favorite songs to play live and also to learn a bit more about the band members and hear some entertaining stories. Now, because I know a couple of the Dramatic Lovers pretty well, I had previous insider info about the reason for the hiatus (BJ Seidel is heading off for a year-long travel adventure with his family) and also am well-versed in the band’s background and name (made up of members of past Milwaukee groups like Promise Ring, Decibully, Maritime and Camden and named after the WW1-era anarchist group that met at the Cactus Club), which were both discussed in the interview portion of the live radio program. But it was really fun hearing the story behind one of the tracks performed, “Blaze Orange” (to appear on the Hiatus EP): BJ went for a run in the woods of Door County during deer season and realized as he was hearing gun shots in the distance that he was missing the potentially life-saving blaze orange colors needed during a Wisconsin autumn. (A legit fear I know well, having grown up in rural Wisconsin, my parents basically forbade me from even going for a walk outside on our country roads during deer season.) Also fun was watching my good friend Anna hit the stage during the first song of the evening, “Throwing Halos,” to sing backup. (Anna is a fellow yoga teacher and we joked just before the show that she should do a handstand vault up onto the stage, like some crazed acrobatic fan since no one in the audience knew she’d be doing some singing. She did not end up doing that which was probably the best choice.)

Another highlight was the discussion of their April 2020 single release “Buried” b/w “Slow Down” that went Milwaukee-viral in the earliest days of the pandemic: they shot the video for “Slow Down” separately in their own homes in lockdown (BJ had nothing else to do but play guitar in his stairwell and Andy found his laundry room to be “super-inspiring”) and made it into what now feels like an historical marker about how it felt during those first few weeks

You can watch the Local/Live performance in its entirety to hear the sparkling indie-pop that is Dramatic Lovers here:

Wanda Chrome and the Leather Pharaohs “Eleven the Hard Way” 1995. Splunge Records. Hard-driving Milwaukee garage punk in the spirit of the Ramones, MC5, Stooges and Motörhead. We had the incredible opportunity to see Wanda Chrome last night at WMSE’s Local/Live event at Anodyne: they rarely play out these days but were legendary back in the 90’s for their killer hard-rocking performances. I think the last time we saw then was at least 10-15 years ago, probably at Circle A. Almost 30 years in, they haven’t lost a beat: Cliff’s guitar riffs still shred, Joel’s beats are crashing, and Wanda (Marie) is still just so. fucking. cool. – she and her bass give the band its dark and grooving soul.

WCLP performed several of the songs from their debut LP Eleven the Hard Way, which they recorded live at Quarters Rock Palace (a bar in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood – it is most definitely NOT a palace) on April 29th, 1995. (About doing a live LP as their debut Cliff quipped last night during the interview portion “If it was good enough for the MC5, it was good enough for us.”) Some of the highlights from both last night and the album include their cover of Flamin’ Groovies “Teenage Head,” “Jet Black” and MC5’s “Kick Out the Jams.” And while they didn’t play it last night, worth checking out on Eleven the Hard Way is their epic medley “Bo Diddley” that clocks in at close to 10 minutes of pure garage punk insanity.

You can watch the Local/Live performance in its entirety here — we in the audience gave WMSE’s Local/Live its first ever crowd-demanded encore:

Space Raft “Another Holiday Is Here” b/w “New Years Revolution” 2017. Not vinyl but last night we went to WMSE’s Local Live at Club Garibaldi’s to see Space Raft’s holiday spectacular and picked up this hot-off-the-presses CD single (it was released 3 days ago), hear the band members’ Christmas wishes (365 pairs of socks, Nintendo and $100 gift certificate to Spencer Gifts), what Christmas means to them and their favorite holiday movies (Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, Gremlins and Scrooged). Dressed in the same holiday finery as in the hilarious video (starring a few local Bay View musical celebs) for the power pop track “Another Holiday Is Here,” (best line: “filled with Yuletide cheer and cheap Wisconsin beer”) they played that song as well as a few more in between answering audience questions and inviting a couple of other local acts (including Joe Crockett, Testa Rosa) onto stage to perform holiday-inspired songs. Space Raft did not perform the other track on the CD single, “New Years Revolution” but it is an excellently psychedelic and heavy. You can listen to the entire segment here under 12/12/2017.

GGOOLLDD “Gold+” 2015, limited blue vinyl edition with the previously released “$tandards” EP and “Boyz” single, plus remixes and instrumentals. Gloss Records. Last night we went to WMSE’s Local Live at Club Garibaldi (you can listen to the entire live stream here under 9/5/2017) where GGOOLLDD performed a selection of new songs including the single from earlier this summer “Secrets” and older tracks, like “Gold” which appears on this comp. They also answered questions submitted by the audience. One was about the their latest single which releases this Friday, which we learned was recorded at singer Margaret Butler’s dad’s home in Baton Rouge in the pool house – which doesn’t have a pool – while watching chickens catch mosquitos. We also discovered the band member’s spirit animals (Butler’s: a unicorn, of course, bassist Nick Ziemann’s: a lion, keyboardist Nic Schubert: a chihuahua, drummer Mark Stewart: a baby bear, and guitarist Willy [I don’t know his last name]: a meerkat (which he followed up with a great animated imitation). Also interesting info: tour van snacks! Butler: tabasco-flavored Cheezits, Schubert: pumpkin seeds, Ziemann: hard-boiled eggs (Butler chimed in “it’s gross because it’s true!”), and Willy: ranch sunflower seeds. Until a couple of months ago, GGOOLLDD were truly local, living and writing in Milwaukee; they currently reside in Appleton, WI and will soon be relocating to Baton Rouge to escape Wisconsin’s winters.

Between the interview questions and answers, GGOOLLD played beautiful synthy dream pop, swirling and timeless. On the record and live, Butler’s voice is the highlight: ethereal, glittering and sweet with whispers of rough edges and streaks of mischievousness, like a delightfully adorable mashup of Karen O, Debbie Harry and Kate Bush.

Whips “Turn It On” 2014. Local Milwaukee band the Whips’ sophomore release on purple marbled-vinyl. We’re heading to Club Garibaldi’s tonight to see the Whips play WMSE Local Live, a preparatory show, broadcasted live, for their third album release party at Cactus Club on Friday (the album The Ride drops on Friday but can be streamed today here). Turn It On is vaguely sinister yet upbeat indie rock; the members of the Whips are current and past members of other local bands including Red Knife Lottery, Hot Coffin, The Academy Is, Space Raft and Call Me Lighting. Singer Ashley Smith’s dynamically-ranged vocals are crisply clear and gently hostile and Christian Hansen’s guitar is tinged with psycho-surf (“Fire Drill”). The tracks on Turn It On range from hard-driving (“Switchblade,” “Right On”) to piano-accompanied ballad sweet (“Forever Glow”). I’m looking forward to tonight’s performance: 1. It’s free; 2. It’s early (6:00!!!); 3. The band takes interview questions between songs so we will get to learn more about them. Tune into 91.7 WMSE at 6:00. I’ll be there.
