The Smiths “This Charming Man”
The Smiths “This Charming Man” 1983. Rough Trade records. 12″ single remixed by Francois Kevorkian, Side A “This Charming Man New York (vocal)” and Side B “This Charming Man New York (instrumental).” So upbeat so sad so vivid so British.
The single reached #25 in the UK in 1983 and then #8 in 1992 after its re-release. I love this quote about the track by NME’s Paul Morley: It jangles and crashes and Morrissey jumps in the middle with his mutant choir-boy voice, sounding jolly and angst-ridden at the same time. It should be given out on street corners to unsuspecting passers-by of all ages.
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
