Thee Oh Sees “The Drag” and Ty Segall “Maria Stacks”
Thee Oh Sees “The Drag” and Ty Segall “Maria Stacks” 2009/2016 reissue on Castle Face Records, an awesomely obvious swap from two of the most prolific garage punk acts of the 2000′s. I just picked up this short, garagey 7″ today at Rush Mor Records: Thee Oh Sees cover Ty Segall’s “The Drag” which appears on his 2008 album Horn the Unicorn. Segall’s original is a bit less muddily psychedelic than Thee Oh Sees’ rendition, slightly more rocking but just as grittily lo-fi. They nail Segall’s sneering vocal intonations perfectly. Thee Oh Sees’ original of “Maria Stacks” (from their 2008 release The Masters Bedroom is Worth Spending a Night In) has some excellent harmonizations, a hypnotic psychobilly beat underscoring a hard psychedelic vibe. Segall’s version is demented, with manic vocals and harsh guitar strumming filling in for drums, very lo-fi and excellent.
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
