Ty Segall “Harmonizer”
Ty Segall “Harmonizer” 2021. Drag City Records. Segall’s latest release – though he’s so prolific that it’s entirely possible that he’ll have put out a couple of singles and a collaborative EP or two by the time I’ve finished this post. Heavy, fuzzy psychedelic garage rock that adds in some “synthtastic” sounds (that’s from the album press release) which honestly had me a bit nervous upon listening to the bleep-bloop opener “Learning.” On the rest of the album he thankfully mixes space-age synth with his signature glammy buzzed-out guitar, catchy riffs and melodies so the rest of the record is Ty-tastic (I love synth! just weirded out with that first track, and a little by “Ride,” too). Two tracks have been released as singles, the excellent heavy-beat title track “Harmonizer” and “Feel Good” upon which his wife, Denée Segall, sings icy cold lead. Pretty sure neither have charted anywhere, Segall flying mostly under the radar, though the LP did hit #34 on the UK’s Independent Album chart. My other favorites include “Whisper” and the chest-rattling “Waxman.”
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
