Veseria “RLTVTY”
Veseria “RLTVTY” 2017, Romanus Records. I just received this very limited edition custom vinyl yesterday (25 copies!) and cannot believe how beautiful it is (even in the hands of my mostly unwilling Vault-boy assistant). Veseria is from Indianapolis and describe themselves as genre-fluid; they combine the sounds of traditional and indie rock, folk and a sprinkling of punk into an album that conjures up various soundscapes. “Wingspan” has an alt-country flavor that would feel at home in a spacious meadow, swirling in the sunshine amid a field of prairie flowers. “Safe in Sleep” is raw and sparse, a lonely stool on an otherwise bare stage, closing time at the corner bar. “Star Stuff” showcases the beautiful interplay of voices between husband/wife Verseria members Jen and Patrick Roberts, a perfect encore anthem when the audience holds up their lighters (well, now smartphones) and sways in time to the music. “Feed a Fever (Starve a Cold)” is reminiscent of The Pixies: loud-quiet-loud structure, Frank Black/Kim Deal interplay of vocals, starting sweetly and then exploding into a fierce hook (with a whisper of banjo). “Zenobia” and “Time to Kill” are swagger and attitude, stomping black boots on the club floor. Great stuff and killer vinyl beauty.
Daily (maybe) pulls from the vault: 33-1/3, 45, 78, old, older, classic, new, good, bad. Subjective. Autobiographical. Occasionally putting a record up for sale.
